QUIZ: How much do you know about the EU and European Parliament?

How much do ‘EU’ know?

FOR THE FINAL topic of The Good Information Project, we have taken a direct look at Ireland’s role in the EU, how the European Parliament functions, and how Irish people can put their EU citizenship to best use.

Polling regularly bears out that Ireland has the most pro-EU attitudes of all the member states within the bloc — even though we also have a propensity to push back when European treaties are put to us via referendum.

Since Brexit, we have more MEPs than ever – but what do you know about them, their role in representing you, and how you can make sure your voice is heard in Europe’s democratic processes?

Take our quiz to find out how clued (or might we say, ‘clEUd’) in you are.

So what you’re really saying James is that you don’t support workers rights. You support the idea that employers have every right to disregard their contractual obligations once they satisfy certain conditions that they have created. A buyout or redundancy is not a choice, its a gun to the head.

Such a stupid thing to say. It shows the intellectual plane you operate on. Without understanding the details of a strike you automatically support the strikers. Idiot.

I didn’t say that. I support the idea that the employer has the right to offer a change in contract but the employee has the right to refuse. I support the right for that employer to offer redundancy packages in line with our laws. People need to be treated fairly in the eyes of the law and employers need to be able to survive and protect their businesses.

Of course we’d expect everyone to get behind this dispute and I wonder how many other ones may be on the cards. I’ve heard whispers that a similar process may be about to take place in Aer Lingus where those with old contracts are about to see them effectively torn up and replaced with, ‘take it or leave it’ new ones from their new owners. But Willie Walsh will keep smiling.
It’s very disturbing how workers rights in this country seem to be being eroded, successive governments looked on and keep pointing to such things as the minimum wage, as if that solves everything.

I am one of the affected staff and this is a fight to protect our rate of pay and a our agreed terms and conditions. I personally stand to lose €92 pw if tesco implement these ILLEGAL proposed changes. They offered redundancy which is about 2.5 years wages. I am 42 and couldn’t take this option. They also claim they offered generous compensation for the change which is 2 times our annual loss. Generous is not a word I’d choose. And the final claim that they need this change to benefit customers?. Why threaten a paycut if this is the case. One word sums it up PROFIT. Simple as that. This is the reason I am staying to fight this capitalistic and illegal move. This is also about protecting other workers in the company for the future and also the private sector the country over. This is a fight we are ready for. This is Solidarity.

Why don’t tesco be happy that 700 have taken the redundancy package and leave the remaining 300 workers alone. 300 as a percentage of their total staff is minuscule, and will not adversely affect the bottom line too much and the good will generated will grow sales into the future for them. If they antagonise these remaining pre ’96 staff all that will happen is a strike so huge loss of revenue for the company. Huge loss of respect for Tesco from their loyal Irish shoppers and so nobody wins. If Tesco decide to continue to pay the remaining pre ’96 staff their current wages and conditions the shopping public will support the company in greater numbers going forward and so the monies will be easily recouped.

    Paul

I will tend to aide against a lot of people on the journal regarding workers. My view would be along the lines of if you don’t like your job then get a different one. I believe that TransDev should sack all the greedy LUAS drivers.

However, my attitude does not work with minimum wage people. They don’t have the opportunity to change jobs like others do. I think it is important that both our society and out legal system protect these people from unscrupulous employers. Unfortunately the unions and the likes of the AAA don’t see this differentiation and just want to strike and are very happy to damage genuine employers through nothing else but greed.

To be fair Gary, I imagine Paul is a young man who lived a sheltered life in which case I might have been a bit harsh on him. We all had some nonsensically ideas about the world when we were quite young and we sometimes look back at our former selves with a degree of mortification. Doesn’t mean he is a bad guy just very immature.
    He has time to change……
That being said if he is 40 then he is, unfortunately, a complete tool.

Actually Suzie I know managers, both in my store and another, who disagree with what our leadership is doing. Fact is if they know how to run a store then they know how to accomodate the different needs and abilities of their employees (including university students, single parents, etc etc, its NOT just pre-96ers), if they don’t then they’ve no business being a manager.

Yes. How dare long serving staff strike over contract changes. Bottom line is if you are long serving staff member you should not be penalised financially, even more so with Tesco and other corporate companies, if a company makes Big profit year on year, the staff loyalty gets rewarded. Simple.

If Tesco decided to get their finger out and get competitive, instead of plodding along and matching prices, they could increase turnover, etc etc, and not have any need to get staff on the cheap.

Don’t want to be a d*ck but wasn’t everyone raving about how great Tesco was when the Dunnes strikes were on? Now it’s Tescos turn to burn, guess the unions like to keep themselves busy, I suppose they have to justify their large salaries some way. Have to laugh when people say don’t shop in a particular shop because of how they treat their staff, they all treat their staff the same and you have to shop somewhere…

Most people in this world are employees and companies really are taking advantage of employees because of the recession even though they may turnover big profits.Management and HR(most likely don’t understand the job) get bonuses to cut wages regardless of the loyalty of staff or the years they invested into the company.

How far are the ruthless companies willing to go?? People really in all jobs should protest at unfair conditions especially to companies making big profits and with the Co -operation tax at a low rate in Ireland these companies get more than a fair enough break from the Irish Goverement. This would not be tolerated in France

My mistake, I fully support the Tesco workers as for the greedy B***ards I hope you can live on jobseekers when the company collapses.

Companies don’t care about workers rights anymore. Unions have been demonised and the run for profit is all that matters. CEO pay is ridiculous. There is no social conscience anymore. Support these workers, it’s a disgrace what is happening to them. Tesco have lost my respect for sure.
