Three dead, including gunman, in New Jersey supermarket shooting

The shooting took place two hours before the store opened while staff were stocking shelves.

LAW ENFORCEMENT IN New Jersey have said three people were killed including the gunman in a shooting that took place in a supermarket earlier today.

ABC reports police responded to shots fired inside the Pathmark supermarket where employees were stocking shelves at 4am US time.

There was reportedly a confrontation with the gunman who is said to have been wearing body armor and the suspect was killed.

It is unknown if any others were injured but several employees were taken across the street to the TGI Fridays.

The scene is said to be under control and heavily armed police can be seen in the car park of the supermarket.

Davis we need to keep our criticism of Americans way way down because this little Republic is averaging one viable bomb in public places every six day at the moment. Put that against the shootings in the US every four weeks ago and you should be more concerned.!

Not sure about the figures but i will give it a go. 13000 people are shot in america every year, pretty sure we don’t have more than 13000 viable explosive callouts a year.

Sluazcanal – Not a fair comparison. Keep in mind that there are *314 MILLION* people in the U.S. Three individuals over the past month or so went on a mad shooting spree making these news stories. A tiny percentage. Compare that to the percentage of Ireland that are messing with bombs.

Yes, there is definitely a big gun problem, but you need to compare apples to apples in comments.

The other thing is that it’s 314 million people from all kinds of different backgrounds and places. Check out who is driving taxis in LA these days. By contrast, Ireland is a relatively small place and still pretty community oriented – people know each other, or they know who might know you. When you think about you might wonder how to really compare the levels of violence.

We have some issues here in Ireland but at least we don’t have to worry about being shot during the weekly shop! Maybe in Lidl actually. Only messing, shop there myself and never been shot.

No but, as said earlier in the comments, Ireland is averaging as many viable bombs being discovered as the US is shootings. We can wag our fingers all we want at the US, but when the bomb disposal and Garda rapid response units aren’t needed anymore we can’t really talk.

@Jason Culligan Just because both countries have weapons problems on similar scales (bombs v guns) doesn’t mean their gun control policy cant be criticised. Both issuses (guns and bombs) should be targeted for massive reductions, but here bombs are ilegal whereas in America guns are freely available (for the most part).

The right to bear arms dates to the dates of muskets and muzzle loading guns. It is hard to see how it is relevant in these days of high powered easily concealed weapons.

Tax on BULLETS…they can’t ban guns, 2nd amendment is the holiest of holy.. Put a massive tax on ammunition. Put them financially out of reach for people. Everyone has the right to own a gun, but very few can afford to put bullets in them..This won’t stop all murders and shootings, but it would surely result in a reduction of “reactionary” or spur of the moment shootings if people had to save a few weeks wages to afford to load their weapon…

Right to bear arms and all that…..They must realise that times have changed and that it not a right you can bestow on people and expect to be honoured. Thats just crazy. The shootings will continue and the right will be defended. ( Just to clarify….honoured….used for lawful pruposes)

There is a huge difference to the ‘Right to bear arms’ and being allowed to buy machine guns and automatic weapons.

A right to bear arms refers to the power of the people’s ability to overthrow their government if their government becomes corrupt / protect their properties etc.

Just to clear up a few points made in previous comments.
30,000+ shootings a year in USA
Not every few weeks, this is the third in a week.
How many people killed by these explosive devices in Ireland recently?
Even a majority of Yanks don’t agree with their gun laws. I had a conversation with a guy from Pittsburgh during the week about how ludicrous it is. This guy bought the most easily available gun (AK47) and walked down the street carrying it and nobody batted an eyelid.

Look where it happens, New Jersey, a state where gun control is in place to near Irish levels, and doesn’t allow concealed carry, just like New York or Chicago last week.

The bullet tax wouldnt work. Think about how easy it is to get black market cigarettes.Ammo would be the same. Plus anyone with half a brain and an instruction manual can recycle ammo especially from weapons like shotguns.
They need to look at the criteria for allowing people to own firearms. Its not as lax as many think but not as tight as it could be. That is purely vote related.
They still have far more crime with illegally held weapons than legal (as do we). The concern many arms bearers there have is that as law abiding citizens they will give up their weapons if the law tells them to but the crazies wont and then they will be defenseless unless a cop happens to be there.
There are obvious issues with that line of thought and Im not saying I am pro or anti US gun control because I dont really care. I dont live there so they can do what they like. Whoever wins the next election could give them all a gun and allow them to fire it in the air to say good morning for all I care as long as his foreign economic policy doesnt make my life any harder.
