'A time of great danger': Abortion rights supporters and opponents map next moves

The Supreme Court on Friday ended the constitutional right to abortion in America.

A TEXAS GROUP that helps women pay for abortions has halted its work while it evaluates its legal risk under a strict state ban on termination.

In Mississippi, the state’s only abortion clinic continues to see patients while awaiting a 10-day notice that will trigger a ban.

Elected officials across the US have vowed to take action to protect women’s access to reproductive health care, while those against abortion promised to take the fight to new arenas.

Days after the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling overturning Roe v Wade ended the constitutional right to abortion in America, emotional protests and prayer vigils turned to resolve as several states enacted bans and both supporters and opponents of abortion rights mapped out their next move.

In Texas, Cathy Torres of the Frontera Fund, a group that helps pay for abortions, said there is a lot of fear and confusion in the Rio Grande Valley near the US-Mexico border, where many people are in the country illegally.

That includes how the state’s abortion law, which bans the procedure from conception, will be enforced. Under the law, people who help patients get abortions can be fined and doctors who perform them could face life in prison.

Torres said: “We are a fund led by people of colour, who will be criminalised first. We just really need to keep that in mind and understand the risk.”

She said abortion funds like hers that have paused operations hope to find a way to safely restart their work.

Travel out of state

Tyler Harden, Mississippi director for Planned Parenthood Southeast, said she spent Friday and yesterday making sure people with impending appointments at the state’s only abortion clinic know they do not have to cancel them right away.

Abortions can still take place until 10 days after the state attorney general publishes a required administrative notice.

Mississippi will ban the procedure except for pregnancies that endanger the woman’s life or those caused by rape reported to law enforcement.

The Republican speaker of the Mississippi House, Philip Gunn, said during a news conference on Friday that he would oppose adding an exception for incest. “I believe that life begins at conception,” he said.

Harden said she has been providing information about funds that help people travel out of state to have abortions.

Many in Mississippi were already doing so even before the ruling, but that will become more difficult now that abortions have ended in neighbouring states like Alabama.

Florida is now the nearest “safe haven” state, but Harden warned “that may not be the case for too much longer”.

‘New modern menace’

At the National Right to Life convention in Atlanta, a leader within the anti-abortion group warned attendees yesterday that the Supreme Court’s decision ushers in “a time of great possibility and a time of great danger”.

Randall O’Bannon, the organisation’s director of education and research, encouraged activists to celebrate their victories but stay focused and continue working on the issue.

Specifically, he called out medication taken to induce abortion.

He said: “With Roe headed for the dustbin of history, and states gaining the power to limit abortions, this is where the battle is going to be played out over the next several years.

“The new modern menace is a chemical or medical abortion with pills ordered online and mailed directly to a woman’s home.”

Protests against banning abortion broke out for a second day in cities across the country, from Los Angeles to Oklahoma City to Jackson, Mississippi.

In the LA demonstration, one of several in California, hundreds of people marched carrying signs with slogans like “my body, my choice” and “abort the court”.

Turnout was smaller in Oklahoma City, where about 15 protesters rallied outside the Capitol. Oklahoma is one of 11 states where there are no providers offering abortions, and it passed the nation’s strictest abortion law in May.

‘A wave of emotions’

Marie Adams, 45, who has had two abortions for ectopic pregnancies, called the issue “very personal to me”.

She added: “I have gone through a wave of emotions in the last 24 hours. It’s upsetting, it’s angry, it’s hard to put together everything I’m feeling right now.

“Half the population of the United States just lost a fundamental right. We need to speak up and speak loud.”

embedded267601105 Campaigners join a pro-choice rally in Chicago. PA PA

Callie Pruett, who volunteered to escort patients into West Virginia’s only abortion clinic before it stopped offering the procedure after Friday’s ruling, said she now plans to work in voter registration in the hope of electing officials who support abortion rights.

Pruett, executive director of Appalachians for Appalachia, added that her organisation will apply for grants to help patients get access to abortion care, including out of state.

“We have to create networks of people who are willing to drive people to Maryland or to DC,” she said.

“That kind of local action requires organisation at a level that we have not seen in nearly 50 years.”

The Supreme Court’s ruling is likely to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states.

Since the decision, clinics have already stopped performing abortions in Arizona, Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Women considering abortions had already been dealing with the near-complete ban in Oklahoma and a prohibition after roughly six weeks in Texas.

In Ohio, a ban on most abortions from the first detectable foetal heartbeat became law when a federal judge dissolved an injunction that had kept the measure on hold for nearly three years.

But in Minnesota, where abortion remains legal, governor Tim Walz signed an executive order shielding people seeking or providing terminals in his state from facing legal consequences in other states.

He has also vowed to reject requests to extradite anyone accused of committing acts related to reproductive health care that are not criminal offences in Minnesota.

“My office has been and will continue to be a firewall against legislation that would reverse reproductive freedom,” he said.

All he asked for was that these high World Bank figures be looked into, he quoted a number of countries and the highest figure of funds indicated by the World Bank data showed €3.5bn being sent to Nigeria… The figures of broken down per head of population were of concern and warranted investigation… Anytime something like this happens questions like this need to be asked or have people from certain countries being that of a certain race become immune from scrutiny?

That remark in itself is provocative by your own standard… that said, I would agree that the Nigerian estimates would not be entirely reliable but I would also say the same about the CSO figures as they are based on an estimate of disposable income taken from revenue data on “declared” income… I’ve never heard of money launderers declaring I’ll gotten income

CSO figures are based on an estimate of disposable income, taken from revenue figures of legally earned money. The remittance amount from these figures are then an estimate of an estimate on amounts being sent abroad! I don’t trust either source on their figures, but a question of how much illegally earned monies are leaving the country is of great importance.

Whilst I believe Grealish was trying to question the amount of monies possibly illegally leaving the country, or at least untracked, the €17 million figure would only reflect that officially tracked as leaving Ireland for Nigeria. That said, such is the wide gap between the figures it is highly unlikely that there would be such a large quantity of money leaving Ireland untracked, in the order of billions in fact. So I’m inclined to think Grealish should have been cognizant as to why the figures were so divergent, particularly as he had the CSO figures already

The factcheckers say the world bank figures are definitively wrong (based on the fact it is an estimate, caculated from the nigerians governments figures for money received from abroad), but use the CSO figures as supporting evidence (another estimate, based on revenues figures for declared income. Which presumably wouldnt include laundered money. Unless its a first time money launderer!) Not saying I necesscarily believe there is an issue. Just the nerdy mathematician in me does not see the logic here! Maybe I have missed something?

It seems clear that neither the World Bank nor the CSO figures are to be relied upon. One is an estimate by the Nigerian authorities, one by the Irish, and neither is based on any sort of hard data. The CSO figure seems to be just an arbitrary proportion of declared income, and to imply that it is “accurate data” as this article does is absurd.

It seems clear that the Nigerians’ estimate of how many of their people are living and working in this country is much higher than that of the CSO. I wouldn’t be inclined to leap to the conclusion that either is correct.

We also know he should have questioned the figures & he was naive. If discrimination increases then the media that jumped all over it & the TD that stood up and branded “racist” on government record (because of a decision they made of what anothers intentions were) are to blame. The king of Nigeria seems to be in a spot of bother, he offered to transfer $3.5 Billion to me if I just transferred €1000 euros to help him to pay for air tickets for him and his daughter to fly home from Switzerland, but he forgot his wallet as the email proves. So when that all comes through. According to the world bank, we should be about even Stevens?

Pity Noel did not ask the question why was Billions of taxpayers money raised through austerity measures enforced by a blueshirt government to repay for the gangsterism of the banks and developers facilitated by F.F
Government of the day has left this country
Remember our grandchildren will be paying for this gangsterism .

The world bank figures must include money sent by Irish nationals to Nigerian princes, I mean I sent €50k through western union last year, like lots of others did right? Still waiting on my return, oddly enough :-)

Every society in the world has racist elements to it. My Nigerian friends tell me in Nigeria there is racism between the tribes. Marrying to another tribe is a big nono. And who watched hotel Rwanda, where skin colour was the defining issue of the indigenous people. Dose that make rasism anywhere okay… For me no!
Like we have legs for moving about like and sure isn’t that what emigration is. Still, I don’t believe however, that a person should impose on where they go to, what they have came from. I don’t believe that a person should go somewhere, only to be socailise with the people where they came from! Many immigrants who come here embrace here and they and Ireland have benifited, direct provision centers will not allow for integration only imposing segration

This is very good. But can the Journal please please do a factcheck on vaping rather that the “noteworthy” you propose to find problems? A factcheck to ask: is vaping a safe alternative to smoking? Why did the recent “vaping related” deaths in the united states not occur anywhere else yet vaping is a global phenomenon? What is the Master Tobacco Settlement and why is it relevant to the online anti vaping sentiment coming from California and New York? The Factcheck has proven that you can do the research. Do it for my smoking colleague who refuses to quit because of what he’s reading in the Google click media, “sure it’s as bad as smoking”. We can do better in this country ( they have in the UK).

So you can say and misquote any statistics about people working and paying taxes here but sending some of their disposable income back to their countries of origin, but do not let one person dare speak about Tax exiles shipping billions out of the Island tax free to countries like Malta. That is a no no. And those guys are white and Irish as bedamned. They aren’t possible criminals, they are treated like Royalty.

it is an impossible situation if i went and sent 1000 pounds to the uk you wouldnt be asked where it came from but there would be a record of the transaction so it should be available .if there is a criminal element maybe the authorities in each country should be able to tell if payments received by these groups originated in ireland the criminal assets bureau managed that with irish gangs so why not with money sent abroad
