How the Brothers Delaney Road might look under the new plans. BusConnects

National Transport Authority launches plans to greatly improve Cork's public transport system

BusConnects Cork is hoping to increase fourfold the number of people who use public transport.

THE NATIONAL TRANSPORT Authority (NTA) today announced details of its proposals to create a sustainable public transport network across the Cork City region.

The first round of public consultation regarding proposals to deliver 12 new Sustainable Transport Corridors (STCs) as part of the BusConnects Cork project started today.

The plans include around 93 km of bus lane/bus priority and 112 km of cycle facilities across the city.

The proposed corridors make up a large part of Cork’s future transport strategy which is seeking to increase the number of people using public transport in Cork fourfold by 2040 and expand the numbers cycling and walking by 33%.

BusConnects Cork will also be essential to achieve Cork’s objective to become one of Europe’s first climate neutral cities by 2030, under the EU’s Cities Mission programme.

The 12 proposed STCs are:

  • Dunkettle to City
  • Mayfield to City
  • Blackpool to City
  • Hollyhill to City
  • Ballincollig to City
  • Bishopstown to City
  • Togher to City
  • Airport Road to City
  • Maryborough Hill to City
  • Mahon to City
  • Kinsale Road to Douglas
  • Sunday’s Well to Hollyhill

The NTA said that these corridors will improve the public transport network while encouraging more people to cycle or walk by improving the infrastructure around the city.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan said: “As one of Europe’s fastest growing cities, Cork has a unique opportunity to become a leader in sustainable transport.

“These new Sustainable Transport Corridors will make travel by bus, as well as walking and cycling, more attractive to many more individuals and families.

“By significantly reducing bus journey times and providing dedicated active travel infrastructure, sustainable transport will be at the very heart of a thriving Cork City into the future.”

Anne Graham, Chief Executive Officer of the NTA said: “The public consultation is now underway and we invite all members of the public to engage with this process, by sharing their views on these designs and proposals.

“In doing so, you will be helping to shape the future of the bus and cycle network across the Cork Metropolitan Area.”

The 12 Sustainable Transport Corridor brochures, route maps and further information regarding these initiatives are now available to view here

Laughable. Bus corridors. In a city gridlock at rush hour. Ya that will work. No 24hr bus routes. Where is our light rail network. Extend the Middleton rail line to youghall. Put in be stations as promised and re open the rail line west of the city.

@Allora: You can thank Iarnród Éireann and Cork County for not reopening the Youghal railway line. Even the green Party called it an opportunity missed. As for the light railway system I doubt you or I will live long enough to see it. 30 years it has taken to commence work on the Macroom bypass.

@Allora: What’s causing the gridlock… Cars!!! You can do very little with the road infrastructure so it makes total sense to take as many cars out of the city and provide good alternatives with park/ride, buses, trams, bikes, walking etc Cleaner and healthier too….. Great gas freewheeling down those hills on a bike!!!!

@Jerriko17: what’s the causing the gridlock? Cars? No Not necessarily although they play a role. It’s usually LGVs that are causing it at the tunnel which reached its capacity in 1998. Now we have a new container terminal in ringiskiddy which means more LGVs going through the tunnel in the morning or returning from the port. Absolute gridlock. Do let’s put in bus lanes which reduces the capacity of the road to carry less vehicles. The tunnel is now obsolete. We need a new down stream crossing just to cater for the new port but instead we will reduce road capacity with bus lanes put some of the car passengers in buses and create worse grid lock. We also need light rail in the city & to the suburbs which studies show would transform the city. If you think buses will fix our problems in cork

Good luck with it when 2 buses can’t pass on the South Douglas Road in some places. Badly overdue.

Can’t see anything about the cork Luas/tram line they mentioned on those plans. Maybe that’s been put to the side.

Why is there so little genuine outcry at the transport authorities who today confirmed that no extra services are being made available for the 40000 a night marlay Park gigs this week – disgraceful people have to wait hours around marlay for green day guns and Roses Chilli Peppars – there no way taxis can cope when you switch off public transport for such big crowds – and since when are licenses awarded to host very very profitable events without proper event mgt supports being made available – utter shambles and people shouldn’t have to accept such poor 3rd World services when paying top proves for events in Ireland

Start by sorting out the 220 in cork. I get this bus regularly and more often than not I’ll wait 15 minutes only for TWO buses showing up, one directly behind the other I mean it’s not hard to figure out something as simple as having buses run so that this doesn’t happen.

@Jaymes Moynihan: why are you giving out about two buses showing up? The 220 is fairly frequent for the size of the area that it serves.

So Cork now gets a public transport system designed for a city nothing like Cork. That neither understands the geography or the people.
We are on version 3 of Bus Connects Dublin and it is still wrong and causing chaos when they bring it out.
