AROUND 500 KILOS of cannabis resin has been seized by Spanish authorities following an international operation involving the gardaí and Ireland’s Revenue Commissioners.
Six people, including two Irish nationals, have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
As part of ‘Operation Ciana’, or ‘Operation Fortuna’, into the importation and distribution of illegal drugs into Ireland by sea, the Spanish navy intercepted a yacht yesterday afternoon. They searched the vessel, discovering the cannabis resin with an estimated street value of €3 million.
Two crew members were arrested on board the yacht.
Two Irish nationals and two British nationals, all aged between 40 and 60, were arrested in follow-up searches in Spain. They are still in custody and the investigations are continuing, both nationally in Spain and internationally.
