BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY Liz Truss has pledged to reverse the controversial national insurance hike if made Tory leader, as she insisted she can be “trusted to deliver”.
The senior Cabinet minister, who is widely expected to be a front-runner in the already crowded race, promised to “start cutting taxes from day one” to help with the cost of living.
With newly appointed Foreign Office minister Rehman Chishti also declaring his candidacy yesterday evening, there are now 11 Tories in the running for the top job.
Other contenders include former health secretaries Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt, ex-chancellor Rishi Sunak, his successor Nadhim Zahawi, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and trade minister Penny Mordaunt.
Former minister Kemi Badenoch and senior backbencher Tom Tugendhat have also thrown their hats into the ring.
The PA news agency understands Home Secretary Priti Patel is yet to decide whether to launch her own bid, and will likely make a final decision today.
Truss said the Tories can win the next election, but acknowledged it will be “an uphill battle”.
Earlier, announcing her bid for the top job, Penny Mordaunt said the UK’s leadership “needs to become a little less about the leader and a lot more about the ship”.
Candidates populated the Sunday morning broadcast round, with Mr Hunt, Mr Javid, Mr Shapps and Mr Tugendhat all making appearances to promote their campaigns.

At the end of the day, all the runners are cut from the same cloth. They were happy to be enablers for Johnson and only turned on him to protect their own re-election chances. It’s not so much who I’d like to see win but more a case of who I definitely would not like. For me it’s that vile creature, Patel.

Neo Liberalism is a colonial commerical democracy designed to enhance the rich ! LEGALLY written to protect the establishment, their financial affiliates and totally backed by a questionable political party system . Political parties are organisations of hatreds as they are designed to fragment the unity of purpose of the citizen! Citizens having to accept despots put into office by the power of money and lies. Political parties should be disbanded and governance should be carried out by selected qualified experienced people proven in their fields of expertise! All selected governors would be employed under a Legal Social Contract of Agreement. This is the way to transparency and accountability!

@Daniel Pat Lacey: irrespective of its weaknesses, Democracy is here to stay. What you suggest puts power in the hands of fewer people and the democratic electorate will never allow that. Improving on what we have is only possible if people involve themselves in the decision making process. Greater transparency of independent investigative Orgs and journalists, free freedom of information to all and pursuit of the facts and what lies behind them and political debate will enhance our democracies. And taking power away from the individual and placing it in an ideology may get us there.
If I remember well, she said in January that Boris Johnson was ‘absolutely’ the best person to lead Tories into the next election, so she could be an even worse PM.
There are times one just has to feel sorry for the people of England not to mention the others who have to suffer a little Englander Tory government.
The fact that Truss was a staunch remainer during the Brexit campaign but turned literally overnight when remain lost, shows you the type of person she is
Jeremy Hunt is by a distance the best of a bad bunch from an outsider perspective.
As someone who would like to see an independent Scotland and the breakup of the U.K. Truss or Patel would be ideal.
@Ciarán Rice: Sunik is leading the field by a mile, based on number of MP’s who said they would vote for a particular candidate, with Truss well down the field, at the moment (sky news). She had 11 MP’s compared to 38. It would be interesting to find out who the DUP don’t want. We will know tomorrow night.
