The real issue between Israel on one side and Hamas and the other Islamist radical groups on the other is not Palestinian land or Arab land, but Islamic land. Islamic doctrine says that any land that has ever been under Muslim rule but is ruled by infidels must be returned to Islamic rule. & that includes most of the Balkans & Spain. Arab states occupy 99.3 % of the area of the Middle East and all have Muslim majorities and governments. Israel, even with the West Bank included, occupies less than 1 % of the Middle East. Right now in the West Bank, Salam Fayad, the PM, is building the infrastructure of a state for the Palestinian people and there is relative calm there. It will take time but the basis for a future state that is now being created and will hopefully emerge in due course. Gaza on the other hand is in chaos. Hamas is, as their charter points out, not just opposed to Israel, but to all Jews globally. As things stand, negotiations and compromise with Hamas are impossible – Why would Hamas continue to antagonise Israel by firing rockets at its civilians unless they wanted a reaction?
Hamas deliberately and cynically engineer conflict as a way of diverting attention away from Syria and Iran. It fires missiles from within inhabited civilian areas specifically to force retaliation that will cause casualties. Those casualties are then held up to the world as examples of Israeli aggression, and those who want to find fault with Israel are given a cause to promote.
That’s the most ridiculous, ill informed analysis of the situation I’ve ever read. There is a huge humanitarian issue in Gaza. Col Des Travers (retd), one of the authors of the Goldstone Report, recently outlined in a talk how Israel is not allowing enough food into Gaza. It calculates a certain amount of food which Gaza can produce through agriculture and reduces the UNRWA rations by that. Yes, it controls everything. However it has banned Gazans from access to the land to grow those crops, doesn’t allow it grow crops over a certain height near the border, increased the no-mans land around the border etc etc. I would love to hear him ‘debate’ with you, Thomas, he would wipe the floor with you in 2 minutes.
No he couldn’t, if he uses facts. & you do realise that Gaza also shares a border with Egypt, don’t you?

And if it weren’t for that border, and the tunnels, Gaza would have been completely choked by now, and it is the black marketeers who get rich on the back of misery. Egypt won’t open its borders because it fears a flood of refugees and it is kowtowing to the US and the West, all of which want to punish Hamas for being democratically elected. Except it is collective punishment of a defenceless people. Justifying Israeli human rights abuses by talking about islamic land shows a complete lack of humanity. And trust me, Col Travers has all the facts which he gets from on the ground investigations, how many times have you been to Gaza?

As you can see from what I’ve written, I’m getting my information first hand from a very reliable source, I’m not pretending I am an expert on Gaza. What you and thomas are writing does not stand up to fact, facts verified by independent sources. And I have no doubt these facts will be verified by Miko Peled, ex IDF and son of a revered Israeli general when he speaks in Dublin next week. Gaza’s problems will not be solved if Israel stops its human rights abuses, but it would be a very good start.

As a middle aged ‘mammy’ being called a crusty has made my day. And it’s a fair point, seeing at first hand, but you don’t have to witness human rights abuses to know they’re wrong. And what I saw in the West Bank last summer was enough to want to dig deeper, which I have, and it is shameful that we stand idly by. And did none of the poverty and other abuses not affect you when you were in Gaza?

We all derive information from these sources but our responsibilty is to search out alternative views to our own. You don’t need to visit Gaza to see & read breaches of international law by Israel as it fails in its international obligations as an occupier. You don’t need to visit gaza to read amnesty international reports, reputable relief & aid organisation reports, UN peace keeping reports. Our media is not liberal, they normally soak up propaganda from US & British sources and deliver sanitised messages in the name of “balance”. Israel is an occupier – fact! Israel is in breach of its duties as an occupier under international law- fact. Israel continues to ignore several UN resolutions – fact. The resulting conflict as resulted in deaths on both sides but the death toll is enormously disproportionate and the number of innocent civilians including countless children has been unacceptable! I’ve never been to Gaza & don’t need to, I wasn’t in Poland, Germany during WW2 either. I wasn’t in Vietnam, Korea, Sudan, Iraq etc either.

This article is about aid and how the locals are threatening aid staff which is unacceptable regardless of the situation. We all know that there’s a big divide between Israel & Palestine opinion on here but for once when this region is mentioned can we not get into the usual debate from the same people?
Every time Israel or Minister Shatter or anything to do with the middle-east is mentioned on here you don’t have to hold your breadth long for the usual bandwagon jumpers & their “shock & horror at the plight of the Palestinians”. Funnily their shock & horror doesn’t extend to the people of Iran (remember the green revolution) Syria, Iraq, Chad or Sudan whose people are suffering at the hands of Islamic fundamentalism & where a lot more innocent people have died than in Israel/Palestine. What is it about Israel that draws them like flies???? If they’d any real concern for the ordinary people of the region they’d be calling for Hamas/Hizbollah & their paymasters in Iran to join with Abbas in the West Bank & accept the right of Israel to exist, stop the indiscriminate rocket attacks & sit down & negotiate.

In 1948 following the Israeli War of Independence, approx. 700,000 Palestinian Arabs became refugees. In the following years, approx. 900,000 Jews from Arab lands became refugees too, ‘encouraged’ to leave those countries. Do they have a right of return?
Today, there is not a single Jewish refugee from that time; there are however hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arab refugees, along with their families. Why? Why has not the Arab League absorbed it’s brother Arabs? Why do they remain living in squalid and disgusting refugee camps?

If the Palestinian s spent half as much time on productive tasks as they do on producing propaganda and trying to kill Israelis they could have a good country but they prefer to elect terrorists and teach their kids hate, now in segregated schools. It’s good to see the media finally showing them in their true colours. And how come we never hear anything from the usual suspects about Palestinians being obliterated by both sides in Syria. Wouldn’t a flotilla to help them be a good thing? Of course Assad or Al-Qaeda won’t be so accommodating as Israel, they tend to shoot or behead you rather than deport you.

Question: why does the UN keep Palestinians as pets? Most of the “refugees” in the Palestinian refugee camps were born there. Some of them have grandparents who were born in the camps. Their plight is terrible. They would probably have been better off if they had fought the Israelis, lost comprehensively and been forced to go and live in Damascus or Marseille. The Poles and Germans who got kicked out of their homes around the same time must thank their lucky stars that the UN never gave a shite about them

Did you know Denise that under an Arab League policy, formulated in the late 1940′s, Palestinian Arabs living as refugees in any Arab state, cannot have a passport, citizenship, meaningful employment or in many cases, health care or education? They are the lepers of the Arab world and are treated appallingly by their ‘brother’ Arabs.
The latest slogan that Anti-Israeli campaigners like to us is that Israel is” an apartheid state”. In fact Israel is the only country in the region where every citizen, including Arabs, both Christian & Musilm, minorities like Druze, & people of no religion & all sexualities can & do serve in the military, legal profession, education system & in the parliament. The UN is useless with regards to the Middle-East. If there was a motion that Israel had killed Princess Diana & Michael Jackson, it would get support from the Block Voting Islamic states. The EU should take the lead in peace talks. There is hope for peace but BOTH sides need to be presssured into making concessions not just Israel.

How come this debate is getting directed at Israel ? The Gazans do have a certain responsibility for themselves. Maybe if they didn’t spend 20 grand on each grad missile they own there wouldn’t be so many people hungry. Even the homemade rockets fired over almost daily cost between 500 and 1000 dollars to make. Not to mention the thousands of their own people killed by Hamas themselves.
Alot of the young males used to like to talk quiet load about how they are the choose race and how they were the race that killed Jesus christ i couldn’t care less but it did offend some people,but ye better not say anything against them or we are anti semtic.
