Donald Trump watched Capitol riot on TV and ignored pleas to condemn, US hearing told

Trump was accused of pouring “gasoline on the fire” by aggressively tweeting his false claims of a stolen election.

THE US HOUSE committee probing the assault on the US Capitol last year has laid out a searing indictment of Donald Trump’s refusal to halt or condemn the violence and insisted he should be held accountable for a gross dereliction of presidential duty.

Committee chairman Bennie Thompson, speaking at the televised finale of a series of public hearings, said Trump “recklessly blazed a path of lawlessness and corruption” as he sought to overturn the results of the 2020 US election.

The Mississippi congressman, addressing the committee virtually because he has Covid-19, said there must be “accountability” for what he called an attack on democracy.

During a two-and-a-half-hour hearing, lawmakers presented testimony from White House aides who said that Trump watched the Capitol attack unfold on television and ignored their repeated pleas to tell his supporters to leave.

“From the comfort of his dining room he watched on TV as the attack escalated,” said Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the panel.

“He sent tweets that inflamed,” Kinzinger said. “For three hours he refused to call off the attack.”

“Donald Trump’s conduct on January 6 was a supreme violation of his oath of office and a complete dereliction of his duty to our nation,” Kinzinger said. “It is a stain on our history.”

Thompson said Trump “did everything in his power to overturn an election – he lied, he bullied, he betrayed his oath.

“He tried to destroy our democratic institutions,” he said.

There needs to be accountability. Accountability under the law, accountability to the American people… all the way up to the Oval Office.

With Trump mulling another White House run in 2024, Republican vice chair Liz Cheney said.

“Every American must consider this: ‘Can a president who is willing to make the choices Donald Trump made during the violence of January 6 ever be trusted with any position of authority in our great nation again?’”

Lawmakers provided a minute-by-minute account of Trump’s actions between the time he gave a fiery speech to his supporters near the White House claiming the November 2020 election was stolen and extending until the moment when he finally told the rioters they were “very special” but should go home.

Outtakes were played from a message taped by Trump the next day, in which he refused to stick with a written script on a teleprompter.

“I don’t want to say the election’s over,” he said, rejecting that phrase from the script.

‘One of the darkest days’

Two former White House officials – deputy White House press secretary Sarah Matthews and Matthew Pottinger, who served on the National Security Council – testified about their decision to resign on January 6.

Matthews said it was “one of the darkest days in our nation’s history” and “President Trump was treating it as a celebratory occasion”.

“His refusal to act and call off the mob that day and his refusal to condemn the violence was indefensible,” she said.

Pottinger said a tweet sent by Trump attacking vice president Mike Pence for refusing Trump’s demand that he block congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory was “like fuel being poured on the fire.”

“That was the moment that I decided that I was going to resign,” he said.

Thursday’s prime-time hearing was the eighth and final one in this series. Committee members said there would be further hearings in September.

Previous committee hearings focused on Trump’s attempt to sway election officials in swing states that Biden narrowly won and put pressure on Pence.

The committee also examined the impact of a tweet Trump sent in December urging his supporters to descend on Washington on January 6.

Members of right-wing militia groups the Proud Boys, the Oath Keepers and other Trump supporters saw the tweet from the president as a “call to arms,” lawmakers said.

More than 850 people have been arrested in connection with the attack on Congress, which left at least five people dead and 140 police officers injured.

The 76-year-old Trump was impeached for a historic second time by the House after the Capitol riot but was acquitted by the Senate, where only a handful of Republicans voted to convict him.

The House committee is to submit a report to Congress this fall with its findings.

The committee may issue criminal referrals to the Justice Department, leaving it up to Attorney General Merrick Garland to decide whether Trump or others should be prosecuted for the attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Garland said on Wednesday that the January 6 probe is the “most important” investigation the Justice Department has ever conducted and stressed that “no one is above the law in this country.”

Stuck in the mud male belligerents who can’t look at the bigger picture or keep up with the modern thinking of the communities they are supposed to represent.

Almost nobody cares about the League of Ireland and our international team will probably never qualify for another major tournament. Rugby is doing well at the moment and fair play to them, at least they dont have to go begging for stadia. GAA is the heartbeat of Irish sport, something we can truly call our own, and it is of huge cultural importance to us as a country. But even without the big 3 there is plenty of sport in Ireland so thats just a silly statement.

Rules were attached to the funding of the parc and the EU could have stepped in and demanded the return of Funds to the government, tax payers hard earned contributions, it has to be said. It’s high time the GAA went under the microscope, they have the same hold as the Church had on the population. Make them answerable.

I think that the GAA should receive credit for rolling back from the decision, which was taken after all, based simply on the rules of the Association. Given the size and spread of the GAA there must be an overall policy to guide its direction. When the application of the policy caused an outcry amongst its members, it had the courage to reverse the decision.

@Jim Demps: I’m a member of the GAA but involved with a club in New Zealand. I have said from the beginning that the game should have been played in PUC but the bullying has been terrible. A business man (I don’t who’s name) organised a game of association football and then realised it would be popular for people to attend so every man and his dog approached the GAA(in a bad way) for the use of their ground. If this had been organised properly then organisers would have approached the GAA from day one and gotten approval to use PUC. Poor form when Damien Duff has to have a go off GAA members to get a point across when this could have been so simple.

@CrabaRev: My point was for the bitter lady above,My thoughts are
It just took too long to get an answer was the problem, initially they were not approached by the committee that is organising the game, it went viral then that there may be a problem playing in PUC because of outdated rules, now the rules should be changed but that is for another day, it also couldn’t get the go ahead from one person so it took time to get the relevant board together to give the go ahead. It has the go ahead so the game now should be the focus and not this ordeal. Obviously anti GAA brigade will keep it going but what’s done is done.

Atleast this can move on. GAA didn’t handle it well at the start but neither did the organisers in looking for it. One of the turn off points for them would have been that the first sell out game there is a soccer game. This has gone completely gone over the top. Both sides can both be commended now for letting this happen.

The abuse they got, particularly Cork GAA who had no authority to make this decision disgraceful. It was a sad but not uncommon reflection on modern society to see a social media bullying campaign being orchestrated by the masses.

That is not commercially viable. Hurling and football ate ingrained in our DNA and opening these venues up for other sports is of no danger to the GAA.

It’s just a bit rich to be slaying them when the FAI have shag all stadia/facilities to offer and even if there was an agreement to use GAA facilities they’d never be used (besides Croke Park) apart from this one off.

Shows up FAI with Delaney as the millionaire emperor with no clothes. Certainly none in cork limerick Waterford or anywhere really outside Aviva. LOI clubs struggle, fans have poor facilities and no prospect of change. Are soccer people to keep going back cap in hand to other spirts?

Yes a grassroots organisation with a finger in many pies, the Church and politics for starters. The same old mugs are out front in every small town across the country.

@helen walsh: should read the history of the GAA the real history. You might learn something. Every village town and city have GAA clubs run by men and women and these clubs substitute for community centres as well. Imagine on a 32 county basis as well. Why is it so successful ? Europe or anti nationals will not defeat its place in Irish society.

@John Nolan: The GAA is indeed an organization to be proud of with facilities second to none but historically bedeviled by outdated rules which in fairness they address but generally under public protest or urging by Government.
In terms of participation levels however they lag badly behind soccer , more people participate in soccer than GAA football , hurling & rugby combined

Maybe Delaney, with all his strategic know how and focus, could actually grow the game a bit more. Cork City, Dundalk and others have shown we are capable of catching up with some other European leagues instead of being the poor man of European football that rarely has domestic league representatives on the national side. The FAI could learn a lot from the GAA.
