Japan warns of rising global tension in wake of Russia-China military ties

The report calls Russia’s war on Ukraine a “serious violation of international law”.

JAPAN HAS WARNED of escalating national security threats stemming from Russia’s war on Ukraine and China’s tensions with Taiwan in an annual defence paper.

The report calls Russia’s war on Ukraine a “serious violation of international law” and raises “concerns that the effects of such unilateral changes to the status quo by force may extend to the Indo-Pacific region”.

The annual defence white paper, approved by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s Cabinet today, highlights the need for Japan’s military build-up to address security concerns and seeks to gain public support for a stronger military and increased budget, which Kishida’s governing party aims to double in coming years.

The report comes months ahead of a revision to Japan’s national security strategy that is expected to include a pre-emptive strike capability, which critics say would go beyond the limitations of Japan’s pacifist constitution.

China, Russia and North Korea top Japan’s security concerns in the 500-page report. Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi, in a statement in the report, said the Indo-Pacific region is “at the centre” of international strategic competition.

Strategic competition between states has intensified amid a changing global power balance and is “further complicated by factors such as China’s broad and rapid military build-up,” the report said.

The paper doubled its contents on Taiwan from a previous edition last year. It raised concerns over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its impact on Asia, possibly setting a precedent for what may happen between China and Taiwan.

The report noted growing tension between the US and China over Taiwan, as the US continues to send warships through the Taiwan Strait and sell arms to Taipei, while Chinese warplanes have increasingly entered Taiwanese airspace.

China claims self-governing Taiwan as its own territory to be annexed by force if necessary.

Tokyo is also concerned about China’s “relentless” unilateral attempts to change the status quo “by coercion” near the Japanese-controlled East China Sea island it calls Senkaku, which Beijing also claims and calls the Diaoyu.

China aims to build a “world-class military” and has been ramping up the fusion of military and civilian resources, the report said.

In a new chapter devoted to Russia’s war on Ukraine, the report said Russia’s international isolation and fatigue from the war may increase the importance of Moscow’s political and military cooperation with China.

The report said military cooperation between the two countries should be closely watched because it could have a “direct impact” on Japan’s security.

China and Russia are stepping up joint operations and exercises involving their warships and military aircraft around Japan, while Beijing is threatening to use force over Taiwan and escalating regional tensions, Mr Kishi said.

Beijing criticised the Japanese defence paper, saying it exaggerated China’s military threat and interfered with China’s internal policy with Taiwan, and repeated its claim over the disputed East China Sea islands.

“We urge Japan to stop hyping the security threats in its neighbourhoods to justify its own military build-up,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

The report comes as Mr Kishida’s government pledges to bolster Japan’s military capability and budget under a revised national security strategy and basic defence guidelines that are planned for release later this year.

Kishida’s governing Liberal Democratic Party has called for doubling Japan’s military spending to 2% of its GDP, in line with the NATO standard, to about 10 trillion yen (€71 billion).

Recent media surveys showed the majority of the Japanese public support increased defence spending and deterrence, including possessing pre-emptive strike capability.

This guy is a military General having come to power in a military coup backed by the CIA and US military. The courts are meer extensions of that military rule and these trials are a sham.

@Charles Williams: the alternative is not some shining utopia with freedom for all.

The alternative is the aftermath of Iraq and Libya.

@Fiasco99: that alternative was voted in by democratic election. Just because you, or more importantly, the US Americans don’t like who the Egyptians voted for doesn’t mean they can set up a coup d’etat and irradicate democracy.

Suggest you learn a bit about Morsi’s conduct when in office – ordinary Egyptians turned against him when it became clear that his intention was to destroy the very democracy that got him elected in the first place so that he couldn’t be challenged.

@mattoid: cheers for the link. I’m guessing that article from 5 years ago before the Yanks irradicated democracy and put their puppet in power is the most recent one you’ve read from the very website you posted. Go ‘home’ on that site and you’ll see a picture of Egypt that is a lot worse under el-sisi.

@Cormac Ó Braonáin: horrible governments bent indestructible have been voted into many countries. I’m glad when they fall.

The brotherhood were democratically elected. But there was never going to be another election.

The brotherhood placed the Luxor masacare organiser as the governor of a state. They were more oppressive than Sisi I has been. They were a perverted regeneration that deserves to fall.

I am glad Egypt has avoided the chaos.

Its interesting how the democratically elected Brotherhood are the murderers and the coup leaders the lawmakers. If you believe in democracy you have to question this so called trial. If you believe in democracy you must respect the democratic vote. If you believe in demcoracy you must be against foreign interference in Egypt which overthrew the elected government.
We are continually being sold the story that there is only one democracy in the middle east. I wonder why?
