The seized tobacco. Revenue

Revenue seizes €5.5 million worth of tobacco and cigarettes

The seizure was made at Dublin Port.

REVENUE OFFICERS TODAY seized €5.5 million worth of illegal tobacco and cigarettes at Dublin Port.

The seizure was made as a result of routine operations and with the assistance of Revenue’s mobile x-ray scanner.

A total of 4.5 million cigarettes and over 3 tonnes of ‘roll your own’ tobacco were detained.

The illegal cigarettes branded ‘Kingdom’ and tobacco branded ‘The Turner‘ had an estimated retail value of €5.5 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €4.3 million.

The cigarettes and tobacco were discovered concealed in over 30 pallets manifested as ‘groupage’ that had arrived in Dublin Port from the Netherlands and were destined for an address in Co. Meath.

A Revenue spokesperson said: “This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.

Kenny’s stance is no surprise. The Irish state has always primarily served the interests of domestic and foreign capital over the welfare of the majority citizens. This was demonstrated very starkly in the bank collapse and bailout implemented by FF and fully supported and eagerly enforced by FG since entering government.

In Syriza, the Greeks have at least a government which is attempting to defend the interests of the majority of Greek citizens instead of a capitalist elite in contrast to our own treacherous and craven government.

This isn’t a conflict of nations, Greece Vs Eurozone as the mainstream media and assorted party hacks prowling the Journal would have us believe. Rather this is a confrontation between the interests of the vast majority of ordinary European citizens as represented by the new Syriza government in a battle with the capitalist elite who dominate the Eurozone. Solidarity with Syriza and the Greek people in their struggle.

There will be debt relief for Greece because the current plan can’t work, it will cut growth for several more years and further increase debt to GDP.

All this plan does is guarantee that it will be a bigger default, that the Greek economy will have a bigger hole to climb out of but the Euro may have settled in to growth for a change.

The EU will happily burn Greece down to economic ashes if it buys more time for the Euro.

No Timmy. Like Ireland, much of Greece’s debt was imposed on the nation to cover the losses of financial speculation.

“The EU-IMF Troika forced a bankrupt country to take on further loan packages, allowing foreign banks to dump their bonds onto Greek taxpayers and trap Greek citizens in debt servitude. To add insult to injury, this was called a rescue.”

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/11376031/Investors-have-woken-up-to-Greeces-nuclear-risk.html

It’s also important to understand that the ECB is the monopoly issuer of the Euro and creates at will the money which is being extracted with menaces from the Greek people which is decimating their economy and society.

If the ECB wants to pay the gambling debts of their capitalist elite, let them press the keys on their shiny computer in Frankfurt and stop looting the Greek. Spanish, Portuguese and Irish people.

They forced Greece in exactly the same way that they forced Ireland into the Troika bailout (stitch up). Both countries are users of a foreign currency which the ECB control.

Or have you forgotten the Trichet letters? As the 2 year blanket bank guarantee was close to expiring during the autumn of 2010, the ECB under Trichet forced the Irish government into full repayment of all bank bondholders from senior secured right down to junior unsecured under threat of withdrawal of liquidity funding from the Irish banks.

The Greek government faced exactly the same strong arm methods to take onboard loans which were used to bail out the financial speculators while leaving the Greek people with the debt.

This has been explained to you pair of neo liberal twits multiple times.

I find it very amusing that you coddled codologists are doing your damndest to defend the dysfunctional corrupt society that is Greece in some deluded notion that the largely socialist governments that it has had since the civil war were in some way responsible when in fact they did nothing to change their ottoman legacy and were more than happy to rip off their own people and the EU and as another said burden the rest of the world with the fruits of their profligacy and corruption. The Greek people may not deserve what they are getting but Syriza is part of the problem not part of the solution. Little rich boys with no understanding of real economics have no hope of fixing things. And by the way how can a trainee blueshirt be a blueshirt hack? btw 2, what part of I have no political affiliation do you not get. Yes I believe in the market, yes I am an economic and social liberal, yes I reject the rubbish you spout. But no I am not a blue shirt. But if it makes you happy to believe it off with you!!

Coddler – who’s going to pay the Greek bills? Are you? Do you suggest an extra 2% solidarity income tax?Ireland is owed 1 billion euro by Greece – do you have this in spare change to give us? Why should poorer countries like Slovakia and Latvia pay because the Greeks don’t want to pay their taxes?

You ignore the fact that Greece, are paying just 3% interest on their loans. They are paying less in interest now than before they joined the euro. Because of debt write offs and extensions to their loans – they are paying much less than if they left the Euro.

If they leave the euro – and say f**k you to their creditors – they will have no debt – great. However, they will still need loans to pay the wages of their doctors, their pensions, their dole, to invest in the country. (They did have a primary surplus before Syriza came to power – but people have stopped paying their taxes and the economy has stalled). Who would lend to them? At what rates? They would soon be paying much more in interest than they are now.

I think we could agree that ultimately Greece is broke. I would say that neither the EU nor the Syriza government have managed things very well. Both have completely unrealistic views of what is possible.

I’d imagine there is a huge dichotomy between Ireland’s public and private persona.

Ireland Public – “Debt Relief is not an option….”

Ireland Private – “….unless we get it too”

The EU know that any concession to Greece will have to be mirrored with similar write-downs to the rest of the PIIGS.

Whichever way you look at it, the Gov stance is cynical, calculated and cold. The question is whether the cynical stance is a best available option for us at this point. Remaining outwardly compliant while hammering the message privately that anything Greece gets must be given to Ireland is possible the most effective, if not exactly honourable, tactic we have.

That’s the man we had negotiating on our behalf.
Look how happy he is just to be in the presence of the like of Nicolas Sarkozy; completely starstruck.
Think about the Miriam O’ Callaghan interview; “Did you try to negotiate better terms for Ireland in relation to the bailout?” Please….
The fact that this worm has the temerity to even address the Greeks on this subject is shocking to me. While I accept that the Greek and Irish situations are and were different, Enda Kenny is a spineless lapdog in comparison to the Greeks who are prepared to stand up for their countrymen.
That statement by Kenny is a disgrace.

Against what I have argued up to now, in fairness the IMF were looking for 400 million in defence cuts but the socialist Syrisa government only wanted 200 million…Why?…..given that it was well recognised that previous Greek governments had massively over spent on the military, why do Syrisa seem to want to continue with this elitist project. Also, with Greek children begging for food on the streets of Athens, why is it more important for Syrisa to protect the right of Greek civil servants to retire at 50? Has Sir Humphrey suddenly become a socialist? Why also are the Syriza socialists so opposed to the EU / IMF demand for reform of the entry requirements to the establishment professions, like law and medicine…..surely, as socialists they should be in favour of this. Speaking as a confused friend of this brave attempt to overthrow neo liberal financial services industry dominated capitalism, surely Ruth Coppinger, Richard Boyd Barrett, Clare Daly or Paul Murphy could answer these questions??

that is not what was said Herr Bowe… you clearly do not understand the reality that large parts of Irish society were enthusiastic participants in the United Kingdoms colonial enterprise both as colonial administrators and soldiers and their salaries and pensions came back to Ireland. On top of that the rape of empire paid for public buildings, including schools, up and down the country many of which are still in use. And we benefitted to the same extent as Scotland Wales and England. Which is not to say we did not also suffer from English rapine in the same way as did Scotland and Wales. Whine all you like about the famine but in doing that remember the highland clearances. And learn a bit of history.

@ justanothertaxpayer Well, there’s these wonderful things called books, historical literature and documentation put together by qualified historians which allows us to learn lessons from the past without actually having to be present at important world events. My early memories are somewhat irrelevant in this context but it is generally accepted, with the notable exception of Denise, that the ending of WW2 and the fall of the Berlin Wall were in fact two completely different events. Let’s not delve into the British Empire and Ireland; it’d take too long but only a fool would ignore the lessons of history in relation to that particularly abusive relationship.

You’d think so Diarmuid – write off the debt, and start from zero. The only problem is – who would lend Greece money? (for their pensions, their railway workers, their hospitals)

They would have to do the equivalent of going to the local money lender – where they would be charged 30% per annum.. Currently they pay 3% of GDP in interest – if they left they would end up paying far more for their loans.

No, unfortunately Dev was a bit of a masochist. His pathological desire to be free from his former master was only matched by his desire to become a slave to his new master, Germany, which suffered a temporary set back in 1945. His commisaerations to van Ribbentrop were a widow on his long term aspirations. Luckily his FF colleagues, or at least their sons and cousins inheriting FF Dail seats, set about enslaving this country to his preferred master. At no time did he have any real interest in an Ireland free from foreign landlords because as a good elitist he felt that the Irish responded best to the whip of foreign domination – just not British domination.

If so, how did the government knowing that he was dishonest by its own tribunals evidence and findings – ever let this man within an ass’es roar of any new government contract such as the two he has got from Irish Water – which most people will not pay for on principle being aware of the dodgy deals around the awarding of the contract.

It will be dressed in diplomatic language with no blame culture and with pious hopes for prosperity all round (at some unspecified point in the future). There will be no mention or long term regard for the unfortunate Greek populace (and those as yet unborn ) who will bear the burden for generations of keeping this crypto-currency and socio-political experiment going. There is far too much self-interest inherent in the Euro zone and like Ireland’s bond holders some people are far too big to fail as Greece is about to find out somewhat sorely !

Enda Kenny is being rolled boy by the IMF and ECB simply because he’s the poster boy for Austerity. Preserve the rich and hammer the poor. It is not as if Kenny actually matters in any of this, save as a mouthpiece reading off a script drawn up by the IMF and ECB. What is being done to the Greek people is criminal. Governed for many years by looney right parties, throw in a military junta as well ( even more looney right by default), their people put in hock to the bankers of Europe at no benefit to ordinary people there. Just like the ordinary people of Ireland, the ordinary Greek people didn’t benefit from one cent when all the money was being thrown around in the good times The rich of both countries certainly partied, and continue to party despite the crash. The governments made sure the ordinary people paid the debts of the rich by way of austerity.
The IMF, ECB and EU cannot afford to allow the Greek government to follow their mandate. The Irish government certainly can’t. Spain, Italy and Portugal are waiting in the wings. The whole corrupt system should be brought crashing down.

The big difference is that syriza are making attempts to stick to their word and pre election promises. Fg and particularly labour threw their promises out the window. Syriza and varoufakis are representing the people of greece. I seriously dunno who fg and labour are representing any more, but its not the majority of people who voted for them in the last election. 1. Does Joan not realise that no one runs their own economy that has the Euro as its currency. It was the German government who were doing OUR BUDGETS for the last 8 years, once we use a common currency then no one has control over it and that is why there is austerity and why others like the IMF are involved. Would they be involved if there was austerity or if they hadn’t the euro?
    2. The IMF and E.U. Diplomats were in discussions with Greeks opposition parties and with some in the Syriza party hoping in fact to cause another Greek election by stirring the pot and that use to be called trying to cause a coup and is undemocratic? Is Joan backing a coup in Greece?

Wonga was forced to cancel thousands of loans in the UK because it found the company had given loans to people they never could pay back, put them in an endless cycle of repayments they never get out of. Ireland banned such types of loans years ago, which is why we do not have payday style loan operations here. Funny how these loans are banned here, yet Joan thinks its perfectly fine to use these types of financial structures on an entire country.

Any Greek people reading this please understand that Irish people are with you. Our spinless government support Merkel’s Fourth Reich, the rest of us dont! Soon we will get rid of these Quislings at the next election, pity our leaders have no balls unlike yours, I am ashamed to say I am Irish .

That’s the thing about socialist government like the Greeks , they eventually all run out of other peoples money to spend while lecturing everyone else on how it should be done. There like boy racers who think there great drivers despite crashing there cars into ditches every few months.

Maybe Joan you should concentrate on your own country your own party . A country not in recovery as stated endless times by a pair of Morons ruining what use to be a freedom
Of speech country now becoming democratic . The only recovery out there is IT & exports . That’s not in general that’s not for all us so how do we supposedly have more money in our pockets ? Homeless at a crisis health system in outer chaos , a government who are nearly as corrupt as Fianna Fáil were , the government who still blame 4 years later Fianna Fáil for the mess that this crowd have inherited or more to the point the mess they made . A liar of a Taoiseach who claims he didn’t tax us he didn’t put vat up . So Joan deal with the issues that actual concern u & this country .
