'Devastating': Teenage jockey who died in Kerry named as Henry de Bromhead’s son, Jack

Tributes have been pouring in for the young jockey.

LAST UPDATE | 4 Sep 2022

THE TEENAGE JOCKEY who died in a beach race meeting in Glenbeigh, Co Kerry, has been named as Gold Cup-winning trainer Henry de Bromhead’s son, Jack.

The horse racing community is in mourning after the incident and tributes have been pouring in for the young jockey.

The tragic incident occurred at around 5pm yesterday on Rossbeigh strand, at the Glenbeigh Racing Festival.

It’s understood that Jack (13) died from injuries caused by a fall from his horse during a race.

Jack was an up-and-coming jockey, riding a winner at the Cahersiveen Races last weekend.

The teenager was recently interviewed by RTÉ Racing. Pundit Kevin Blake described the news as “a devastating tragedy”.

Suzanne Eade, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, today said: “Like everybody in the horse racing and pony racing community, I want to offer my deepest condolences to his parents Henry and Heather, his sisters Mia and Georgia and extended family, on the tragic loss of their beloved Jack.

Jack may have been only 13 but he was already incredibly popular in the racing community. His family and friends, his pony racing colleagues and all those who lives he touched are in our thoughts today during this numbing, devastating tragedy.

Eade added that Horse Racing Ireland, through the Industry Assistance Programme, “will assist in offering counselling for Jack’s pony racing colleagues and friends”.

Pony Racing Ireland tweeted: “We pass on our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jack de Bromhead who tragically died in Glenbeigh on Saturday.

“It’s impossible to put into words the since of grief and loss that is being felt by everyone involved so please give them time to mourn. RIP Jack.”

On behalf of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board, CEO Darragh O’Loughlin said: “The directors and staff of the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board extend their deepest sympathies to the De Bromhead family on the tragic loss of Jack yesterday. May he rest in peace.”

The British Horseracing Authority said in a tweet: “The BHA sends its deepest condolences to the family of Henry de Bromhead following the tragic death of his son Jack.”

The tragic incident occurred at the popular racing festival, which began yesterday for the first time since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

All races which were scheduled for today at Glenbeigh have been cancelled.

Just unbearably sad and indescribably awful , the brutality and the very suddeness of it .I was reminded in an instant of the sudden unexplained death of my own 4 month old baby girl almost 40 years ago . I. just think always of those lines written for the army of young men slaughtered in WW1.’They shall grow not old as we who are left shall grow old ,age shall not weary them or the years decay ‘
