China shuns cooperation with UN human rights office over report into treatment of Uighur Muslims

The report accused China of serious human rights violations against Uighurs and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups.

CHINA CANNOT COOPERATE with the UN human rights office after it released a report criticising Beijing’s policies against Uighurs and other ethnic groups in western Xinjiang, a top Chinese diplomat has said.

However, Chen Xu, China’s ambassador to UN institutions in Geneva, distinguished between not working with the human rights office and cooperating with the world body overall.

Chen said the report issued last week – which said some rights violations under China’s anti-terrorism policies could amount to crimes against humanity – offered up “groundless blame” of China’s policies and practices.

“We cannot, on the one hand, conduct cooperation with the office, while at the same time it issued such a kind of assessment,” Chen told UN Geneva press association ACANU.

China believes the report “constitutes a threat” and cannot “conduct cooperation as if nothing happened”, he said.

In the waning minutes of her last day in office on 31 August, the office of Michelle Bachelet, then-UN high commissioner for human rights, issued a report accusing China of serious human rights violations against Uighurs and other mostly-Muslim ethnic groups.

It called on the world community to give “urgent attention” to the situation in Xinjiang.

Human rights groups have accused China of sweeping a million or more people from the minority groups into detention camps where many have said they were tortured, sexually assaulted, and forced to abandon their language and religion.

China has repeatedly said the “assessment” was a fabrication cooked up by western nations.

Chen said China – one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – will continue to work with the United Nations overall, calling the world body the “core” of international relations.

“We will continue the co-operation. But as I said, the office cannot represent the United Nations by delivering such an assessment, in such a nature,” he said.

Chen said China would take an “active part” in activities of the UN-backed Human Rights Council in its upcoming four-week session starting on Monday.

The council works closely with the UN human rights office, which falls under the office of UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres.

Yesterday, the UN General Assembly chose Austria’s Volker Turk as Bachelet’s successor.

Taking a quick photo at a gig is one thing, but people pay good money to watch a gig on a 5″ screen, madness!! Go home and watch it for free on YouTube….oops I forgot, if you don’t record it and post it on Facebook, it never happened.
These people clearly don’t go to gigs for the music, they go so everyone knows they were there. That’s kinda sad :(

The comments on here don’t reflect reality! I don’t go to many gigs but from recent experience 90% of people are at some carryon with their phones yet 100% comments are completely against it! Are the journal readers just an enlightened crowd or a bunch of liars?

Read the title ar@seways and thought it said pigs and not gigs for a few seconds. Wasn’t exactly sure why people were filming pigs on their smart phones but was definetly in agreement something had to be done to tackle it. Its been a long day and i am seriously tired. Wish my darling son would go the feck asleep so i can too :)

If you wish to record a concert with your phone/camera then piss off to the back of the crowd. It is very annoying having to look through hundreds of small screens to see what is on stage.
