The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are 9 things to know as you start your day…

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you begin your day.

1. #CORK: A post-mortem is to be carried out today on body of a 53-year-old man found in Bantry, west Cork, earlier this week. Gardaí are continuing to question a man in his 70s in relation to the incident, who was arrested yesterday. No new arrests have been made.

2. #FRANCE: French police have travelled to England to search the home of a British couple who were shot dead along with two others in the French Alps. Saad al-Hilli, his wife Iqbal, his mother-in-law, and a passing French cyclist were all killed in the attack. The only surviving witnesses, the couple’s two young daughters, are now under police protection.

3. #ROADS: The southbound route of the M1 motorway has reopened following a fire which broke out last night near Junction 18 - however the northbound route remains closed to traffic. Meanwhile, AA Roadwatch has also warned motorists to slow down in Carrick-On-Shannon, Co Leitrim, and Letterkenny, Co Donegal, where roads are damp.

Check AARoadwatch for further updates.

4. #PARALYMPICS: – The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has congratulated Mark Rohan and Jason Smyth on their achievement of winning double gold medals at the London 2012 Paralympics, and also Catherine O’Neill who won a silver medal in the F51/52/53 Women’s Discus. “Winning a medal at any major championships is a tremendous achievement but to win at the highest stage of them all proves an athlete to be one of the best in the world not just physically, but mentally too,” he said ahead of the final day of the games, which will take place on Sunday.

5. #DRUGS: The Department of Health is in talks with the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Asscoaition about a deal that could cut the State’s annual drugs bill by up to €400 million, according to this morning’s Irish Times. The deal could also include a reimbursement agreement on the drug Kelydeco, a new but expensive treatment for a specific type of cystic fibrosis.

6. #ALAN RYAN: Gardaí are continuing to question a man in connection with the murder Alan Ryan, who had links to the Real IRA and was shot near his Dublin home on Monday. The burial of Ryan, 32, will take place in Donaghmede later today.

7. #CHINA: The death toll from twin earthquakes that hit China’s south-western region on Friday has risen to at least 80. Rescue workers are struggling to reach outlying towns due to thousands of houses toppling during the quakes and disrupted communications , leading officials to fear the death toll will rise further still.

8. #US: Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are engaged in a war of words over unemployment levels in the US, following the release of a disappointing jobs report. Obama admitted the figures were “not good enough” but accused Republicans of blocking a plan that would create one million new jobs. Meanwhile, Romney said the incumbent president’s policies had simply failed, reports the BBC.

9. #BREW: The first cup of coffee of the morning is something many of us look forward to – but why does it often smell better than it tastes? Scientists have claimed to have solved the mystery: we have, essentially, two sense of smell.

The act of swallowing sends smells to the back of the nose from inside the mouth, changing it, said Prof Barry Smith of the University of London speaking at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen, reports the Telegraph. By extension, the theory explains why the aroma strong-smelling cheese can be off-putting at first but more pleasant after you begin eating it.

    #DRUGS

I wrote to the Joint Oireachtas committee on health about the wastage of money in the medical card scheme due to a flaw and a loophole in how prescriptions are processed and nothing has been done about it. I once got a script from the GP with 2 items on it. I asked the chemist for only one of the items but they put both items through the system. So there was a charge for expensive drugs that I never got. Plus, in my opinion, I should have to sign for the drugs that I get but that is not part of the process. When I did my research I discovered that there was a lawsuit against the makers of the 2nd drug due to its link to diabetes and rapid weight gain (Seroquel by Astra Zeneca) but doctors are just dishing out these drugs and don’t care. And if you do not take them you are called “non-compliant” or “a’la carte”. A real doctor told me that is “bullshit”. I have a right not to take these toxic drugs.

I had a reaction to an “anti-depressant”/SSRI and developed symptoms of Bipolar Affective Disorder/Manic Depression at the age of 38. Then I was locked away and stuck on dangerous drugs which were over prescribed (eg Zyprexa by Eli Lilly). There are lawsuits against the makers of Zyprexa also because of
it’s link to rapid weight gain, diabetes etc (refer to New York Times for information on that). I gained 20 lbs
rapidly while on these drugs and was lucky not to develop diabetes.

I no longer take medication as I now understand what is going on and the corruption. I have found other ways of dealing with my label and I’m finally starting to recover. After 4 years! But if I stuck with Psychiatrists, who are a drug pushing cult, I would still be on those toxic drugs. These drugs can help for a few days in a ‘crisis’ (ie Zyprexa), as they are basically tranquilizers, but long term they are damaging.

Never stop or change medication without consulting a doctor that knows what he/she is doing, due to withdrawal. There are a few honest Psychiatrists out there. I follow the work of David Healy (Wales), Peter Breggin (New York), Pat Bracken (West Cork) and Ivor Browne. www.http://davidhealy.org/ Seeing as the
public is the clinical trial, here is a drug safety website to research and report side effects.

well done Aine, i myself got off major major drugs, antipsychotics, litium, uppers and downers. i have learnt in the past two years that its been confirmed i have asperger and adhd but also i have brain damage they think due to a birth defect of congenital rubella syndrome. i am at beaumont at present in neuropsychiatry for further testing but am going to be taught tricks on all the brain malfunction so that i can at least not make an idiot of myself. all along…aspeger and brain damage, no mental illnesses, no nothing. i am above average intelligence and have a very advanced level of literacy, verbal and language usage, despite being deaf with only 35% of my hearing left, i was born this way too.
i got off everything, do not trust psychiatry as far as i can throw them, even getting a verbal apology went no way near acceptable, considering my mental health files can be kept longer than that of a murderer. we have to stand up to these people and demand accountability and less drugs!

Interesting that the apology was just verbal. I assume neuropsychiatry is a little more technical than mainstream Psychiatry, who look at you, judge you and drug you. I am afraid that through experience, I do not see them as mental health “experts”. With the few exceptions that I listed above. And they do not like to be challenged. As they like their POWER and CONTROL.

Hope you get sorted. Sounds like you were on all the wrong medication for your true diagnosis ie that you may have been “misdiagnosed”? (for want of a a better word). My whole childhood was messed up by Psychiatry as they managed to trap my father in their revolving door system. They have been doing this for centuries, as highlighted in the RTE documentary “Behind the Walls”.
