You have to hand it to the unionists, they never fail to demonise themselves. The irony of course is that the real Martin McGuinness can rest peacefully in his actual coffin, his final message to the people of Northern Ireland being one of peace, unity and parity of esteem.

@Gerald Kelleher: Old testament laws like if a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night she should be stoned to death on her fathers doorstep. That sort of stuff?

Oh and some of us find inspiration from the images from Hubble rather than the book that claims the sun revolves around the earth.

@The Risen: To be inspired or inspirational you have to be spiritual. A lot of the Christian writings reminded readers that Jesus was tested on points of Judaic law including stoning.

Somehow you fell victim to people who tried to put inspiration in conflict with reason or science vs religion, faith vs fact or any variation on that theme. The old Irish Poets and writers understood the difference between being religious and being spiritual or its evolution into current events where the failings of denominational Christianity fall away to a Christianity that once existed in its original form.

@Atheos Euripides: You don’t know your history, he didn’t care for the theologians but appealed to inspiration -

“Who was it who called one as foolish as I am from the middle of those who are seen to be wise and experienced in law and powerful in speech and in everything? If I am most looked down upon, yet he inspired me, before others, so that I would faithfully serve the nations with awe and reverence and without blame: the nations to whom the love of Christ brought me” St Patrick

    http://www.confessio.ie/etexts/confessio_english#

In short, if you have a problem with denominational Christianity then turn to inspirational forms.

You won’t be the first or the last to try ‘fairytales’ fanaticism because being spiritual and inspirational generally puts Christian understanding on the right foundation.

If you want to understand the bitterness in the north look no further than the 12th July
” celebrations” where they celebrate a battle in 1690 and use it to deny equality to others!

This culture despised “taigs” long before there was troubles! Lord Brookboroughs boast that he wouldn’t have a catholic about the place is as true for these bigots today as it was then!

The bigotry on display at this time of the year is in many ways reminiscent of the KKK in the deep south.

Some are so blinded by hate for the IRA they are quite happy to see the Uppity N*****s get taken down a peg or two!

I have read the effin rubbish in comments praising the British ‘Enlightenment’ with its anti-Catholic ideology. These people were so dumb that if anyone went to the battle of the Boyne site on the 12th July 1690 nothing would have happened. The correction necessary to bring the calendar in line with the Solstice and Equinox points instituted by the Church in 1580 wasn’t introduced in Britain and therefore Ireland until 1751.

The Battle of the Boyne happened on July 1st 1690 as they reckoned it back then and the Battle of Aughrim on the 12th July 1690 so they had to give the Battle of the Boyne importance after they reluctantly fixed the calendar correction.

Great to see the Royal Society dunces still on the go in the Journal comments.

When city councils have to go to the courts to try and prevent the unsafe construction of bonfires, that should be a concern…. When police officers are afraid to enter areas where the construction of unsafe bonfires is taking place because of the risk of inciting violence, that should be a concern…. When peoples homes have to be boarded up and families temporarily moved out to protect them from the overspill of the fires, that should be a concern…. But there seems to be a different concept during the 12th of July celebrations in Northern Ireland as to what is safe, and enjoyable for all, and what is ridiculously stupid behaviour.
