An Garda Síochána

Gardaí examining new lines of inquiry into 1972 Belturbet bombing

Two teenagers died in the bomb.

GARDAÍ HAVE APPOINTED a senior officer to review the 1972 Belturbet car bombing after several new lines of inquiry were discovered.

At 10:28pm on the 28 December, 1972 a car bomb exploded outside Farrelly’s Bar and McGowan’s Drapery on Main Street, Belturbet.

Two children, Patrick Stanley (16) of Clara, Offaly, and Geraldine O’Reilly (15) of Drumacon, Belturbet, Co. Cavan, were killed instantly; eight more people were injured.

A loyalist group had always been suspected of carrying out the bombing. However, nobody has been charged in relation to the crime.

In a statement this morning, gardaí said they have set up a new incident room at Ballyconnell garda station to examine the case.

A spokesperson said: ” Following a review of the investigation, An Garda Síochána has identified a number of lines of inquiry. A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Ballyconnell Garda Station.

“Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information in relation to the Belturbet Bombing on 28th December, 1972 to contact the incident room at Ballyconnell Garda Station 049 9525580, the Garda confidential line Free-phone 1800 666 111 or Crimestoppers 1800 250025.”

Was at a communion two weeks ago and the local travellers ruined it for most people. Blocked the car park with the limos and filled half the seats in the church that was reserved for families(they refused to move)
The small traveller kids ran around the church screaming all during the service and the priest had to stop mass twice. They are a bloody disgrace. Sick of them.
Their response to everything is “that’s discrimination boss” as evident in that video.

That is serious Bad Craic P O Leary. I’d have got up and walked out. Hopefully a few others would have followed you. Methinks they wouldn’t and you’d be left to your own while everyone else would yap about it after mass but do nothing.

Nothing I hate more is people taking up seats that were for others. They look like you have 2 heads on you when you ask them to move.

That there is proper racism. You cannot equate any group of people, but let alone an entire ethnic group. This kind of language is what leads to genocides. Totally unacceptable.

I’ve been to quite a few communions where there has been travellers present and there has never been a problem. The people on this forum should take a good look at themselves and hope this never happens to them or their family. That priest is a disgrace. Did he even once think about the child in this? Being different isn’t a crime but if you listened to some people it should be a hanging offence. They should be ashamed.

The general comments about travellers are disgraceful. Yes, there are some travellers that are obnoxious and criminals and maybe this woman did or said something that was not caught on camera. But there are also many travellers who are kind, interesting and thoughtful people. Just like every other section of society. But to label the whole traveller community as one thing or another is something ridiculous.

@Paddy, I’d be willing to guess that most people who have a bad opinion of travellers, have had multiple bad experience with them. I was once mugged by travellers and had my car set on fire by them. The majority of my encounters with the community are negative. I’ve been blocked in my estate because of how they sometimes park here. I’ve often felt intimidated by their roving gangs in the estate. Once had a traveller selling drugs from the house next door. I could list countless instances of anti-social behaviour, what I would consider animal cruelty and criminal behaviour. I’d report them but some of us have to actually live next door to them and don’t have the liberty of high horses in the suburbs..

Those are just my PERSONAL experiences. I’ve heard much the same from most people around here. It’s not racism, because quite simply if they were to settle and stop acting the maggots, I’d have no problem with them. Their smart people, their very entrepreneurial which one can only admire, but most of the time the work they do is either criminal or all cash only, so they never pay back into the big pot from which they get oh so much. Their culture discourages education, it encourages exactly the kind of bad behaviour most people complain about. How can anyone defend that???

But at the end of the day, it’s a church, as far as I was concerned everyone and anyone is supposed to be welcome in a church and to be fair her dress wasn’t that short, not my style at all but I have seen shorter!
Travelers do bring an awful lot of discrimination to their doors themselves but for once I think this seems like it was uncalled for.

I’m no big fan of the travelling community and have had many bad experiences with members of the travelling community, but some of the comments here are spewing a shocking hatred towards a stereotyped ethnic group. We should all take stock and consider where such blanket discrimination leads.

People on the opposite side labelling travellers as poverty-stricken victims aren’t helping either. There are rich and poor members of the travelling community – similar to the rest of society. There is an element of disadvantage but there is also an element of self-inflicted disadvantage. Basically, generalisations aren’t helping anybody.

The behaviour you describe that occurs on your doorstep is awful and not a healthy environment to live in but they do not represent every other traveller family in the country.

I can honestly say for me at least it’s experience , I wish it weren’t true but just about every experience I have had has been negative from being robbed to just experiencing absolute lack of basic manners and adherence to social conventions . What can I say , it’s sad but it is the experience of so many people and as per my question to Rachel maybe travellers should be more questioning of their own responsibilities to society rather than hiding behind emotive buzz words thrown around by pavee point

I just want them in houses, paying their dues and taking responsibility for their actions like everyone else in this country. That is all, and treating them like perpetual victims only makes it easier for them to demand mansions to frustrate local councils and housing authorities who try to accommodate them.

Other parishioners had complained to the priest about their behaviour and dress. The priest had talked to them about it but they turned up the next time continuing in their ways. A video of a traveller shouting abuse and throwing out discriminatory accusations at a priest who is showing restraint and coolness while not engaging them in a shouting match before doing a first communion clearly doesn’t tell the full story. Other travellers were let into the service and it wasn’t even the group in question child’s first communion. No, but would you post a video of a crime being commited against you? I bet you would. Everyone would so stop it. Plenty of non travellers wreck establishments too and public property and private property so cop on. You should be glad to have ‘do gooders’ because they would defend you as much as anyone else.

It’s not true. When was the last wedding you went to, where the father of the bride was shot? How about a funeral where the mourners were armed with slash hooks. When was the last time members of the settled community, in a small town in the west of Ireland, abused and violently expelled the owners of a pub so they could drink and smash the place up without interruption. Who was it that was off scamming people across europe with fake Honda motors? Who was it scamming people in Sweden and elsewhere with sh*tty tarmac. These people are up in front of the courts every day of the week, yet they represent less than 1% of the local population here.

I have no problem with the people. People are people, but their way of life is incompatible with a modern society. Their culture is incompatible with what we have built on this islant. They need to be settled, assimilated and made accountable for their actions. I’m positively liberal with my views on the “problem” of travellers. We need to spend money now to get them into houses. Educate their children, make them part of the wider community so they feel responsibility to it and stop running amok.

To pretend that their community is not disproportionately responsible for crime and anti-social behaviour in this country, is naive in the extreme and serves nobody, certainly not wider society.

Ahh the plight of the oppressed indigenous minority of Ireland goes on. Before the red thumbs start, how much of your USC goes in handouts to these people. I can’t afford a new jeep but they have monopolised rural drug dealing without an ounce of regard for the people of Ireland. Good man. Keep them out.

I spent the last 6 months on here tearing into the church and it’s lay folk so I’m hardly going to take up for them lightly.
To me this is simple. They have a dress code. It’s their building, their property and their gig and they get to set whatever rules they like. You voluntarily choose to be a member of that religion.

She was refused on the basis of the dress code, not traveler status, as evidenced by the other travelers in attendance. A claim of discrimination only works if they have refused you BECAUSE of your membership of that group. That was not the case here. Abide by their dress code or find another religion. Simple. I like taking my shirt off when it’s very sunny, but when I visit Rome and head into the Vatican City I have to put it back on again, because I’m walking onto their turf so have to abide by their rules.

Maybe they’ve gotten so used to being discriminated against (or claiming it) that they think it’s happening all the time even when sometimes, it’s not.

Then he takes out his pen and starts to write as if to take down her reg number, insinuating that she probably did not have any tax and insurance and would report her to the gardai .Which btw is a well known intimidation tactic and it is not nice to see a priest use it.

Karen, your statement about tax is massively racist. Even if it was true it wouldn’t make sense as a counter argument because it’s not the priests business to worry about who pays tax or not.

I am sorry but travellers have taken religion out of communions, which is meant to be a solemn occasion. The waste of money spent on costumes and party dresses does not fit the occasion and ignores spirituality . You are either religious or you are not. Go and have a party and wear what you want , but if you involve the church do not be disingenuous.

I am an atheist and don’t believe in any of this nonsense, but at least I do not take the piss out of the church by insulting it by having no respect for their formal ceremonies. Travellers have demeaned communions for their children as it is portrayed as an excuse for their children to wear inappropriate clothing for an occasion which they have no understanding as to its religious significance and merely see it as a day of lavish opulence.

The parents, who themselves are children, (The State is to blame) due to a lack of education are reliving the celebration for themselves rather than instructing their children as to the significance of the occasion. So I agree with the priest on this occasion

On the face of it, in this instance at least, the traveller lady was dressed appropriately. Bit gobby with the shrill assertiveness though. In all fairness there must be reasonable limitations. A friend of mine years ago wanted a metallica song played at his relatives funeral. Priest declined and so followed the par for course “what right does he have to deny me this etc etc”. Another bloke at same funeral said, it was alright but did he-the priest-have to mention God so much!! You couldn’t make it up.

Nobody mentions the fact that the priest cursed at her. The church would want to be careful because travellers are probably the only ones left in this country that actually respect it. I don’t like what he is wearing, does that mean i can stand outside a church and deny him entry? He has no right. If the church want to make a stand on dress code, let them do it from the pulpit and begin to explain to the people, not just decide willy nilly on the day, at the door, who he will let in because that can be interpreted as discrimination. Another point i noticed was the way he took out his pen and started to take down her reg number. Why do that? Would he do that to a ‘settled woman’ if she had an argument with him? Discrimination at it’s best.

    Calm down, calm down
There was an article last night here, ten spontaneous traveller photos. Well the stuff them boys were getting up to. It’d warm your heart. They’re not all scammers and con men

Feck the story (hard to say what the real facts are). The real shock to me here is the out and out racist thinking in the comments of this article!

At the risk of sounding racist myself, I knew most Journal.ie commenters took a rather simplistic (often negative) view of the world, but I thought most of ye were better than this!

As I prefer to think, idiocy knows no race, religion, gender or boundary. And the woman in the video seems to be just acting the idiot (I’m open to being corrected). That said, it’s hard to see who is the bigger idiot – her or the over-generalising racist commenters on here!

You can’t paint all travellers with the one brush . There are so many people who aren’t from the travelling community and are just plain rough but people call them travellers just because of that ? On Friday we had a vote for equality for gay marraige because we want to live in an equal society ? Well then why are travellers so discriminated aggainst in situations like this . People need some serious come on .
