Italy’s far-right leader Giorgia Meloni forms new government

The Brothers of Italy party, which has fascist roots, gained the most votes in last month’s national election.

LAST UPDATE | 21 Oct 2022

GIOGIA MELONI HAS formed Italy’s new ruling coalition, giving the country its first far right-led government since the end of the Second World War and becoming the first woman to serve as the country’s leader.

A presidential palace official announced that Meloni and her Cabinet would be sworn in tomorrow.

Meloni’s party Brothers of Italy, which has fascist roots, secured the most votes in Italy’s national election last month.

A few hours before the new government’s formation was announced, Meloni, 45, a career politician, told reporters that she and her allies had unanimously asked President Sergio Mattarella to give her the mandate to govern.

Her main coalition allies, former premier Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini, are longtime admirers of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, though Meloni has backed Ukraine in its defence against the Russian invasion.

Flanked by Berlusconi and Salvini, the 45-year-old said on the steps of the Quirinal Presidential Palace in Rome: “We have indicated myself as the person who should be mandated to form the new government.

“We are ready and we want to move forward in the shortest possible time.”

Meloni cited urgent problems “at both national and international level” – apparent references to soaring energy prices afflicting households and businesses and the war in Ukraine.

Forza Italia president Berlusconi and League leader Salvini stayed silent during Meloni’s brief remarks to reporters.

Three-time premier Berlusconi has been chafing over the election victory by Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party in the past month.

He recently derided Meloni as “arrogant” in written comments.

Earlier this week in a meeting with his legislators, Berlusconi expressed sympathy for Putin’s motivation for invading Ukraine.

embedded269387393 Berlusconi poses with Meloni and Salvini, Licia Ronzulli and other centre-right party members AP AP

In response to Berlusconi’s comments that were also derogatory about Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy, Meloni insisted that anyone joining her government must be solidly in sync with the West in opposing Putin’s war.

Salvini has at times also questioned the wisdom of tough Western sanctions against Russia.

A fellow legislator in Salvini’s League party who was recently elected president of the lower Chamber of Deputies has publicly expressed doubts about continuing the measures.

Outgoing premier Mario Draghi’s national pandemic unity coalition collapsed in July, after Salvini, Berlusconi and populist 5-Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte refused to back his government in a confidence vote.

That prompted Mattarella to dissolve parliament and pave the way for elections some six months early.

While the final efforts to form the new government were under way, Draghi was in Brussels, attending the final day of a European Council summit, grappling with ways to deal with higher energy prices.

@lasair, what is the difference between surrogacy for same sex couples and opposite sex couples? Do you remember the case in Australia recently where a ‘normal’ couple abandoned a baby in Indonesia because he was born with downs syndrome. Or the case of the couple who adopted but the husband was a registered sex offender. You’re argument is irrelevant to the referendum. I hope you don’t have children of your own. I hate the thought of innocent minds being poisoned by your hate speech.

The Irish electorate was not fooled by a No campaign based on misdirection, hysteria and the occasional lie told often enough to try and give it the semblance of truth. To hear the Ionistas whinging about the Yes campaign’s overseas funding is deeply ironic. The Noes’ obnoxious poster campaign evidenced deep pocket funding and in the end, despite it, their arguments were the poorer and they lost the argument. Losers not victims.

Patrick, the children’s referendum was a load of nonsense. It was to show the government were doing something to draw attention away from the fact that if they actually funded the services we already had prop nearly children would be protected & heard properly. The referendum on the Senate was a load of crap too. If they weren’t bleeding the Country dry through the Senate they would have just ended up sitting on a myriad of quangos. If the people care about something strongly and believe they can make a difference, they will come out and vote.

Firstly if you are asking and voted “YES” then you along with many many “YES” voters have not done proper independent research which you should have and have contributed to condeming and ushered in an era of child cruelty.

    L. Doris has spelled out rather alarming detrimental effects to children “redefining family means children born from surrogates and donors, children commodified, children robbed of their full identity”

At least this Govt had the b@lls to run the referendum but a vote getter it is nonetheless. It’s great to see that we’re the first country worldwide to offer a free choice to the people who have adopted this new legislation. It is long overdue internationally to have such equality & great to see we’re the leaders of such a milestone. However, it would be hard to deny that the referendum was politically motivated mainly to target a new sector of the voting public. Proud to be Irish & it would be great to think that the volume of people speak as freely with regard to Irish Water & the next general election.

    Joe

You are worse than any “YES” voter. I deplore “YES” voters for what they have done to our children, but I know where they stand and can easily argue against their lies and laugh at their usual behaviour. You however were a “NO” commentor and now after all the winning by the “YES” side you have shown you are a disloyal cad. You along with Pontius Pilate have shown you are truly the type never to be trusted, the type of people who fight alongside you only to turn and scarper when the going gets tough, simply because you are swept up the “YES” side triumphalism and celebration, panting along to gain a bit of their hype and backslapping. 2 pathetic individuals, the type of individuals who would support any cause depending how many people are with them, or who is successful, which is what many of the “YES” voters originally were too, simply bandwagon people caught up in the buzzword mantra of “equality”, but for you to turn tail now, because you want some kudos, is typical of a parasitical worm. A “YES” celebration means exactly the same consequences for children as it did before the result, it means “humans-to-order” childrens lives lost, children never having had a mother or a father.

I will never bow, bend or break, never be disloyal or betray. I am damn glad and proud to have voted “NO”.

What annoyed me most about the No campaign was the very obvious and irresponsible tactic of muddying the waters and misrepresting the issue, Marriage Equality. It was an argument based on scaremongering and lies. We have a trait in this country of hiding away from issues and leaving to the next generation to resolve, I could see that happening here and it really annoyed me personally. It was an argument based on “people will end up marring Goats and Ireland will be swallowed by Volcanoes”. If you can’t face issues in a logical and adult manner, then you are leaving them for the next generation to resolve, for me thats irresponsible and cowardly.

The way I see it, in the debates I’ve been havinv here, honest No votes were no problem. Genuine religious belief or the want to stay traditional. Anything that was solely based on misinformation was unfair on the people that did that vote No.

But look, it’s all done now – no more campaigning, no more debating. The answer is imminent and there’s no more anyone can do, no matter which side they’re on, so it’s pointless bringing it up now!!

Just not as irresponsible as having the lack of foresight to understand unintended consequences. So yes, it truly is amazing how Ireland has disintegrated into a nation of people who proudly believe (albeit through no fault of their own) that facing “”An issue in a logical and adult manner” (even though we are all adults and all have logic!) is the same as understanding it in dept so that the unintended consequences are actually rooted out and prevented from occurring. Not us Irish, just jump right in there, spout all the “holier than thou” lines you can find accompanied by a few statements of self-proclaiming, self- bestowed wisdom and hey presto…..we end up as we are. And all you people out there who thought “dumbing down the leaving cert” a few years ago was a good idea!

It truly amazed me during the last week or so the numbers of angry no voters I spoke to. These were people I would have thought were kind caring intelligent people who I took for granted would be yes voters. But in stark contrast to hear of all the hometovote crowd coming back my faith was restored In humanity. Yes all the way

You are entitled to your own personal beliefs John, but not to enforce them onto other citizens. Would you like people to dictate your own personal life because of how they felt about your lifestyle? You can think on a personal level that gay marriage is wrong and still not wish to impose that onto other citizens making choices in their own personal lives. It’s called live and let live John.

Tom is too blinded with bigotry to be able to read his own links. Tom, if you read that link it clearly states that, “[although the campaign against sexism was] entirely optional, plenty of young men arriving for school on Friday morning appeared to have embraced the campaign” and “came to school wearing skirts Friday”. The children were not forced, as you claim. They chose to wear the skirts as a symbol of solidarity against sexism.

It may be because the looked at the issue in a different way.

What they may conclude is that a yes vote abolishes marriage and creates a new contract also called marriage that does not take the family or children into consideration. The redefinition of marriage is not necessarily progressive.

The ‘progressive’ yes voters appear to have embraced a let’s show the world how great we are, not giving due consideration to the issues concerned. Like wearing a national lapel ribbon or wristband for the world to see an nod approvingly.

If there has been voter fraud, there is no suggestion that it would have changed the overall result.

That, however is no reason to turn a blind eye to what has been going on. It is inconceivable that none of the plane loads of people that have arrived to vote were voting illegally.

In a referendum that was closer run that might be a decisive factor and cannot be ignored. It has to be investigated.

Paddy Scully, we could not afford to lose against the calumnification of gay people spread by the more prominent advocates on the No side.

The voice of the people has spoken. Fortunately, most voters were not gullible and were not fooled by the No side.

By way of compliment, each and all of your comments accurately reflected the true mentality of the No side. You gave people like me an insight into your mental processes and outlooks.

I saw what you and your ilk tried to do to Ailbhe Nolan. Not nice at all.

I’m elated by the result and hope that it will not just allow loving gay couples the opportunity to marry, but that it will be a tipping point against homophobia.

    Congratulations to all involved.

I remember growing up in the 70s/80s and it was so narrow minded back then compared to today.

Racism, homophobia, the church could do no wrong, anti-British sentiment, no children out of wedlock etc etc etc, it was all part of the Irish culture back then but thankfully that’s all going into obscurity, where it belongs.

Ireland opened its mind with this vote & hopefully other countries will follow suit.

I am glad someone liked my comment , it gives me hope :) I am just adding to the last phrase, I wanted to point out that I understand the point that a marriage won’t change a lot of things as gays were already able to adopt and have civil partnerhips.

What annoys me is the double standard and sexism in all shape or form and even more when it comes from women politicians out there!! A country that had women for presidents !!

In all but name Breandán with a combined population of about 15m and Illinois with a population of about 15m also did the same.

I think that the whole idea of being the “first country” to vote in favour was a major driver especially amongst young people.

I haven’t seen an example of collective madness that gripped the country in the guise of yes voters. It has been similar to the Diana grief-fest that gripped the UK and in part Ireland after her death in 1997.

maybe while you are at it you should also ammend as the woman politician you are ‘ A woman has the right to have an abortion, as it is her own body and no one else is allowed to make to decision, if anyone makes a decision on her behalf , they will be punished by law and fined’

A fine would be great , so let’s say a fine of up to 10000 euros and/or 10 years of imprisonment.

Voila, I have been living in ireland for years and I am shocked at this referendum and offended as woman to know that I live in a country where women cannot have an abortion and gays can marry because they want to have rights, but women cannot have rights.

And all this time I thought that France was a sexist country , now I am confused and I am not sure anymore about my future here as I am not gay.
