Nationwide Status Orange low temperature warning to take effect tomorrow evening

A Status Yellow freezing fog warning and low/temperature ice warning remain in place until midday tomorrow.

LAST UPDATE | 10 Dec 2022

A STATUS ORANGE low temperature/ice warning will take effect for the whole country tomorrow evening with temperatures likely to fall below -5 degrees in many areas.

It will remain in place until midday on Monday.

A Status Yellow snow warning has also been issued for Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. It will come into effect from 11pm tonight and will remain in place until midday tomorrow.

The forecaster said that showers of snow will lead to accumulations in places, most substantially over high ground.

Severe frost and further icy stretches will set in tomorrow night, with patches of freezing fog. Temperatures are likely to fall below -5 degrees in many areas.

It comes as a nationwide Status Yellow freezing fog warning was extended until midday tomorrow, alongside a Status Yellow low temperature/ice warning.

Met Éireann has warned of treacherous conditions due to the freezing fog, with sharp to severe frosts expected alongside ice and black ice on footpaths and roads.

Tonight, temperatures will fall to between -5 and 0 degrees, according to Met Éireann.

The UK’s Met Office has said freezing fog patches are already forming across parts of Northern Ireland and England.

These will become more extensive into Sunday morning.

Further travel disruption was seen at Dublin Airport after 143 flights going into or out of the airport were cancelled yesterday as a result of the cold weather. A number of flights also experienced significant delays.

Today, 50 flights due to depart or arrive at Dublin Airport have so far been cancelled.

Daa has advised passengers to check with their airlines for the latest flight information.

Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus are also advising passengers to keep checking their websites for the latest updates in relation to their flights.

Polar vortex heading our way. Most of Europe will be in the minus teens next week. Ireland minus 2 and 3. Hopefully this is the last blast of Winter

@saoirse janneau: what a time to have an airlock in my radiators. Oil must have been nicked from my tank.. it seems it went from half full to empty in 4 weeks and I’m out Mon to Fri 9 to 5. Now I have oil and no radiators working :(

@Peter Cavey: easily enough to fix. Just google the name of the boiler and it usually involves loosening a screw until the oil comes out

@Peter: Sometimes you need to bleed the boiler. If all of his rads are cold it’s his boiler that’s the problem.

Next week could see significant snowfall in places. One of the Models took a step back this morning however. It will be bitterly cold with temps struggling to get above freezing during the day. If it snows it will be proper powdery not the wet shite we get from the Atlantic.

@phil: The year of the big snow in 1947 which I often heard the old people talking about, the snow didn’t hit till the end of February. Hopefully we’ll just have a light dusting.

A lot of comments moaning about Met Eireann issuing lots of warnings. I for one appreciate the forcasts and understand they can’t be 100% of the time.

The beast from the east. However most people don’t believe it. Can’t blame them. Lows of – 10 and heavy snow is predicted. Met office UK gave a 30 forecast other day which was laughable at best considering most reputable weather monitoring stations give ten day forecast.

I don’t get why February is considered spring in Ireland. To me it’s considered winter as in the rest of Europe. I don’t expect somewhat warmer conditions until March tbh.
