House prices are still out of reach for young people. And if you’re paying huge rent and sharing with a few others you’re not really in a position to have a baby. Government has made it very difficult for people, and people who have it good don’t see that so they dismiss it.

In order to buy a house nowadays, both parties to a couple need to be working and fairly established in their career. First time parents now are having children in their early 30s as opposed to early 20s pre 1980. That’s ruling out effectively half the baby making years from a family. Kinda sad in a way.

@The Guy is Here: Actually studies from both the US and the UK in 2017 and 2019 respectively show the opposite of what you claim.
    Findings from UK study:
Researchers looked at data from the British National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles in 1991, 2001, 2012 and 2019 and found that millennials are having sex 4.9 times a month for men and 4.8 times for women, whereas 10 years ago it was 6.2 and 6.3 respectively.
Note that finding is just for millennials, people now aged between 23 and 39. These make up the majority of the group you would expect to be having children now. We certainly live in a more sexualised world these days, but at the same time appear to be having less sex.

The Irish economy is the biggest contraceptive of them all. No kids are happening when there no houses at an affordable rate, even on what would be perceived as 2 middle income salaries. You can bet that the rate would rise if you could have a decent life relative to the cost of living by 25 like previous generations.

Yes, and there’s been nothing innovative on horizon from any of our Govt’s. for decades to solve problem.

EU is peppered with Countries with strong social consciences who have implemented very durable models for provision of housing at annual levels where supply just keeps ahead of mkt demand.

Incomprehensible that Ireland can’t do likewise given idle land located close to our cities, towns and villages, now just growing weeds.

Not since FF’s Bobby Molloy, as Minst for Local Gov in early 70’s, when he commissioned the Kenny Report, has any meaningful proposals been put forward to address this increasingly burning issue.

Maybe SF could initiate a similar study on the subject, now that they are flush, following recent windfall from John Bull, if only to wake up FFG!

People want to grow up, but if it’s not possible because of the economy they continue behaving like 20 year olds. Don’t confuse the cause with the effect.
