The Banshees of Inisherin leads the way as Golden Globes return after Hollywood boycott

The Banshees of Inisherin has eight nominations, the most for any film in almost two decades.

LAST UPDATE | 10 Jan 2023

THE GOLDEN GLOBES will attempt to stage a celebrity-filled comeback today after being rocked by recent scandals, with the Banshees of Inisherin topping the nominations.

The Globes traditionally play a key role in kick-starting the movie awards season.

However, it was taken off air last year amid controversy over ethical lapses and a lack of diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which organizes the Beverly Hills gala.

This year, following efforts to reform the HFPA – which previously had no Black members – American broadcaster NBC will host the 80th Golden Globe Awards on a one-off basis, and invitations have been dispatched to Hollywood’s brightest stars.

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the ceremony, and Quentin Tarantino is among the night’s presenters.

The ceremony will be aired at 8 pm Eastern Time on Tuesday in the US, meaning viewers here can tune in at 1 am tonight.

Scandal

In years past, success at the Globes was a potential bellwether for films hoping to win Oscars, and served as a valuable marketing tool.

Indeed, Academy voters will begin casting ballots for Oscar nominations on Thursday, just days after the Globes gala.

But recent controversies have muddied the waters.

The addition of more than 100 new, more racially diverse Globes voters, who are not full HFPA members, has made it even harder to predict who the enigmatic group of foreign journalists will reward.

While movie billboards and commercials boasting of Globes nominations have returned after last year’s notable absence, few nominees have publicly thanked the HFPA.

Golden Globe Categories

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes movie awards are split between “drama” and “comedy or musical” categories.

On the drama side, The Fabelmans is up against last year’s two biggest box office hits — the blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, and James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water.

Tár, set in the cutthroat world of classical music, and rock-and-roll biopic Elvis could also spring surprises.

Their respective stars – Cate Blanchett, who plays a ruthless conductor, and Austin Butler, stepping into Presley’s blue suede shoes – are frontrunners for drama acting prizes.

But The Whale nominee Brendan Fraser, who alleges he was once sexually assaulted by a former HFPA president, has ruled out attending the gala.

Cruise, a producer on Top Gun: Maverick, is also unlikely to attend, after he returned his three Globes to the HFPA in 2021 in protest at its behaviour.

Irish nominations

The Banshees of Inisherin leads the way eight nods, the most for any film in almost two decades.

The movie is about the abrupt end of a friendship on a tiny island off the coast of Ireland during the Civil War era.

There are nominations for Colin Farrell, director Martin McDonagh, and for best comedy or musical.

Indeed, the entire leading cast, including Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan, and Kerry Condon are nominated for their performance in the critically-acclaimed film.

It could be a big night in the Gleeson household, as Domhnall Gleeson has also been nominated for his role as a serial killer in The Patient.

The series features Steve Carell as a therapist who is held captive by Gleeson’s character, in a bid to help to curb his homicidal urges.

I thought it was a brilliant movie, really enjoyed it. I was on the fence about watching it. But it was absolutely superb in every regard.

@Paul Jude Redmond: I wouldn’t agree. The story was a tad flat, and the ending dire. Don’t be typically Irish putting people/movies on pedestals. Those days long gone. It was a solid film, well acted, interesting, but generally without any real energy or direction.

@Sheila McNulty: Quite so.Superb scenery. The auld sod never looked better. The Irish Tourist Board will be delighted, less so with the depection of rural Ireland as populated by inane redneck eejits with little between the two ears . Astonished at the acclaim given this film, mostly by trendy ‘ luvvies’ and certain critics. Quite frankly it’s a tremendous, rambling bore, without plot, without substance or any clear purpose, with a head scratching ‘ twist’ at the end, if it was a twist. As the credits role the viewer is left wondering ” what on God’s earth was that all about?”

I’m not usually into these types of movies, and was on the fence – once I here it’s nominated for anything I’m usually put off. But I like McDonagh, and Farrell and Gleeson were great in In Bruge. So I gave it a go.

I understand it’s not for everyone. But it absolutely had a brilliant undertone and subplot that simmered along – which I think people struggle with, as the subplot was the main draw – and the main plat was as distraction.

It’s an enthralling – wouldn’t say Black Comedy – more of a TragiComedy.

But understanding it’s not for everyone. I just connected with it.

I watched the film and I enjoyed it but I have never in the history of the western seaboard where my family hails from heard of the actions of Brendan Gleeson in relation to his ‘friendship’ with Colin Farrell, weirdest solution ever and a little disturbing, self mutilation. I wonder what foreign audiences would make of this film and if they believe the storyline as factual or even believable.

@Daff. Myers: There was an incident on Achill a few decades earlier that more baroque in it’s violence if anything. There’s a movie made about it starring Daniel Craig but it’s not meant to be much good.

@Honeybee: The self-mutilation was a metaphor. It’s a cry for help. He’s lonely and won’t be remembered for everything, but Colin’s character is also lonely, as is his sister, but a different kind of loneliness. The mutation represents the need to be remembered for ‘something’ – the song on the violin was a moot – as at the end he couldn’t play any more and he was just shaking the violin. In the end – they both ended up more lonely than they ever were before. And now, he can’t even play his own music.

I’m a bit mystified that The Banshees of Inisheeran is nominated in the “Musical or Comedy” category.

There is some music played here and there and there are some comedic moments (mostly courtesy of the donkey) but I would classify it as a drama any day of the week.

Very odd that “Elvis” is considered a Drama as well.

It was the only film that have i left before it finished out of sheer bordom.. It didn’t remotely capture arran characters of 1923.
…i felt as if I was staring at Farrell and gleeson and not two authentic characters of that period and place.. The women were like the rte radio players players.
Ie their west galway accents were non existent.
… Maybe, the film could have done with some stormy rain and rough sea, to give it some blood and guts and dramatic appeal and authentic irish music.
