This is approaching the ridiculous.

Ahhh the UN. How could a noble goal to unite the nations of the world go so wrong?

It’s become a politicised group that simultaneously campaigns for the release of Halawa because of mistreatment, while allowing states like Saudi Arabia, who suppress their citizens, to attend UN meetings.

What hypocrisy on a grand scale.

I really would like an example of how they are improving – the Saudi Royals are possibly the most savage heads of state in the world, among the likes of North Korea.

Ger, I’m not having that at all. If the Saudis did give women the vote because of the UN, it would still be irrelevant because they live under a monarchy anyway.

Women are only now allowed to vote in local council elections, which contribute to the enforcement of the driving ban for women.

They’ve managed to give women an insignificant vote, so that’s progress right? Ignore the record number of public beheadings this year, though. That doesn’t fit the narrative.

The ‘insignificant’ role is increasing, with nearly three quarters of university students female. With an increasing number in the Consultative Assembly. Saudi is conscious of its image; that’s why the UN puts them in the spotlight, allowing humanitarian organizations to visit and assess. Or should they be categorized like North Korea, about which little is known. And China?

The appropriate way to deal with fascist dictators is to isolate them and let them squeal when their country fails.

It is not to be tolerant, to trade goods to, to provide them with arms, to put them on your UN council of human rights, or to stay silent when they execute people in cold blood.

Saudi Royals should be classed as criminals and apprehended when they try and enter any Western country to break their own rules.

They shouldn’t be able to trample all over liberties of citizens in their own country then come West to enjoy them.

Fair enough – we must agree to differ; I think the UN stance is correct, as does our government and most member states. It also must be borne in mind that Saudi has the second biggest oil reserves in the world (to Venezuela, though Saudi produces a lot more). So our future – as a planet – is dependent on the middle east. Revenge and punishment might well backfire.

Seems to me the only difference in Western attitudes on the two countries is their resources. Disgraceful, but I guess its no surprise that countries will be so self-centred.

Shouldn’t the UN be the ones standing up for their own declaration of the rights of human beings? It’s up to them to stand out from the pack and stand up for justice, instead they have taken on a policy of ‘oh if you let them be and appoint them head of your HR councils, it’ll all get better!’.

President al-Sisi may be a dictator but he has more respect for women than the Halawas do. After all, the Egyptian ambassador to Ireland is a woman.

You can be tough on extremism in a democracy too, Marg. You don’t need a dictator to do that.

The Muslim Brotherhoods form of Jihad is not by weapons or terror, but by infiltration of major organisations and political parties, like a parasite it destroys from within… https://youtu.be/TFxNPvns7nU

Thanks read a full run down. Mother claimed had no political stance and didn’t know before flying over there YET they had very strong ties with family there and went every year. All the siblings took park and personally addressed the crowds at the protests which are common knowledge to be dangerous and extremely violent. So yeaaaaaah no political stance? All of them ignored the army set curfew. Lucky to be alive. Pure lies and playing the Irish card now, cant blame them as its the only hope to get him out. Children fighting brainwashed wars. Sad.
