NINE PEOPLE HAVE died in a mass shooting in a predominantly Asian city in southern California, local law enforcement said Sunday.
“Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation. There are nine deceased,” a statement said.
Monterey Park, about eight miles (13 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles, is home to a large number of ethnic Asians.
Reports said the shooting came at a dance venue an hour after a Lunar New Year celebration.
Local resident Wong Wei told the Los Angeles Times his friend had been at the dance club, and had been in the bathroom when the shooting erupted.
When she emerged, she saw a gunman and three bodies — two women and one person who he said was the boss of the club.

They need a president with the courage to take on gun control over there.
@Antaine O’Labhradha: but what is the solution? Confiscate all guns? That translates to confuscating the guns of all law-abiding citizens. How do you get the criminals to give up their guns?
@Antaine O’Labhradha: given that Congress is controlled by the Republicans and the close affinity between them and the NRA I’d imagine that there is very little a Democratic president can do.
@Paul Dowling: Even here criminals have guns. Most of mass shootings in schools and workplaces in the US are not carried out by people who use guns for criminality, but by ‘ordinary’ people who ‘flip’ in a uniquely american way and take their legally-held battlefield weapons and kill a lot of strangers. If you don’t start taking steps nothing will change.
@Paul Dowling: Do what Chris Rock said. Leave the guns but make every bullet cost 5,000 dollars. Then if someone is shot, they probably deserved it
@Paul Dowling: Criminals have illegal guns by default, and always will. Most of these other rampaging crazy people prob have licensed guns by design. Personally I think guns (whatever the background of ownership) adds to the tangible air of anger in America.

They meant well back in the late 18th century. But what would they think of this? Funny thing, most weak-links are rectified and have a change on general society that have No connection to said weak link. But the American constitution seems to be hard-coded against change and positive evolution.
It isn’t just the fact that guns are available so easily there. Americans have a gun culture where guns symbolise freedom and masculinity (although I’ve seen pink BB guns for sale in a Virginia Walmart marketed for girls, so it isn’t just men).
Restricting availability of guns will help, but until there is a mindset change and they stop identifying so much with their firearms little will change, unfortunately.
