The Explainer: How does Ireland's immigration system work?

Listen in to hear Nick Henderson of the Irish Refugee Council explain.

THE TOPIC OF immigration to Ireland has been in the news a lot recently for a number of reasons.

Immigration has grown in Ireland over the past year, which has been putting the system used for those seeking refuge under increasing pressure. This pressure is primarily due to the invasion of Ukraine, which has seen thousands flee to safety in other countries. Last year, we also saw a record number of people seeking asylum from other countries too, which is possibly due to the Covid travel restrictions being lifted.

That pressure has had an impact on the people coming to Ireland seeking safety - in recent weeks the government temporarily closed accommodation the CityWest refugee centre. That led to people having to sleep rough in the city as a result.

On this week’s The Explainer podcast, we’re looking at the immigration system itself – how it works, who it seeks to help and what the challenges are right now. To explain it all, presenter Laura Byrne is joined by Nick Henderson, CEO of the Irish Refugee Council.

Maybe get someone without a vested interest to explain it, it would be like getting a banker to explain banker bonuses.

The system of immigration is not working… many who comes to our shores have been refused asylum in other countries…then you have an applicant who is refused asylum.. we allow endless appeals in this quagmire of a legal system that goes on for years… Those who have genuine reasons for asylum should be treated with dignity and respect.

How do you assess the credibility of the asylum claim of someone who has destroyed or concealed the documentation they must have had to board their flight to Ireland?
I mean your documentation is your best evidence to show you are who you say you are, and you have come from an unsafe country. So what bona fides reason could a genuine refugee have for deliberately failing to produce the evidence to support his or her application.
Surely if you have deliberately made unavailable the documentation that is fundamental to making your case for protection it is not for the Irish authorities to undertake the expensive and lengthy detective work to establish the facts you have concealed.
If they have themselves concealed the means of establishing a credible case they should be deported summarily.
