Shoppers buying fewer items per trip as grocery inflation hits record high at 16.4%

In contrast, at the same time last year, grocery inflation was only 2.4%.

THE RATE OF inflation in grocery sales has reached 16.4%, a record high, according to market analysis by Kantar.

In contrast, at the same time last year, grocery inflation was only 2.4%.

New figures released by Kantar show people are shopping more often but purchasing less on each visit to the store as frequency rose 7% but volume per trip fell 10.9%.

In a 12-week period ending on 19 February, take-home grocery sales increased by 8.5%, putting an additional €168.7 million into the market. The increase equates to around an extra €113.56 per buyer compared to the same period last year.

Senior Retail Analyst Emer Healy attributed the rise in spending to rapid inflation.

“This growth in sales is largely down to grocery price inflation hitting 16.4%, a new record high,” Healy said.

“This time last year it was 2.4%, so [it is] a significant 14% increase within 12 months,” she explained.

“In a year of rising costs and sky-high inflation, Irish consumers are looking for ways to manage their household budgets. This has led to the Irish grocery market becoming more
competitive than ever, with shoppers looking for the best deals among the retailers.”

Year-on-year, consumers spent €2.3 million more on vegetables, but the volume purchased fell by 9.5%.

The amount of cucumbers and tomatoes purchased fell significantly by 17.2% and 8.9% respectively year-on-year, with Kantar pointing to the impact of supply shortages.

The Kantar analysis found that the market is seeing much stronger own-label growth (11.9%) compared to branded products (6.1%) as shoppers try to save money.

The share of own-label products rose from 42.6% in 2021 to 45% in 2023, while value own-label lines – the very cheapest products – experienced strong year-on-year growth with an increase of 35.8% and an additional €19 million worth of spending.

Online sales remained strong over the 12-week period, 5.2% higher year-on-year, as shoppers spent an additional €8m online.

Dunnes Stores held the highest share of retailers in Ireland at 23.6%, representing a growth of 12.3% compared to the previous year.

Close behind with a market share of 22.9%, Tesco’s shopper footfall was at its highest level since January 2020.

Supervalu held 20.8% of the market share, Lidl 12.6% and Aldi 11.7%.

@Brian Hunt: yep, if these tariffs have the desired effect, our govt will claim credit when house prices collapse for solving the housing crisis. Years to prepare for this, nothing done, it’ll be too late if they bite, just as well they all have their large salaries, large payments for losing their seats, large pensions all lined up.

@David Glynn: Years to prepare for an alternative to unsustainable multinational tax gained through tax breaks. Get out into the world, everyone regards Ireland as a tax haven outside of this country. Anyone with half a brain would’ve been using these taxes to create another income stream. How much national debt have FFG built up, how much is the children’s hosp to date, has MM realised the IMF did bail out this country when he was in office, is it acceptable that Michael Lowry formed this govt, is it intelligent for our Tanaiste to call Trump (now the most powerful politician in the world) names when any fool could see he had a strong chance of being elected, maybe g@bshite applies closer to home.

@Eddie Garvey: what’s that actual problem.
Have any ever worked in a big pharmaceutical company?

About 4% of the cost of the drug on average goes into manufacturing and that is lower the higher the price of the drug…

Med Devices are different but the challenge there for say Stents… US doesn’t really have the plant capacity to make them in any volume… To built a plant would take 8-10 years… Finding a site could take 18 – 24 months.

A lot of companies are going to announce plants in US and they aren’t getting built, well not to produce stuff…

Trump is clueless on how globalisation works and how dependent we are all on it.

@Jack Dermody: it doesn’t matter whether he is clueless or not, it’s the uncertainty that’s the problem, that effect business investment, future plans, expansion, inflation, where profits are declared and resulting tax takes. Even if Trump is gone in 4 years, who follows him and what do they do with Trumps Tariffs. Biden didn’t get rid of the tariffs trump introd on China in his first term. 10 to 12 years to build a plant, maybe in Ireland (children’s hosp), other countries can do it much quicker, but even if it’s 6,7,8 years, that’s not long. Imagine if several multinationals were moving out in 8 years, scaling down all the time over the next 8 years. I’m not saying it’s definitely happening now, but is going to happen, what are we lining up to replace our earnings from being a tax haven, why are we not using this revenue which is unsustainable in the long term to do something similar to Norway has done with it’s oil money. Using it to build 2 plus billion hospitals, pay enormous salaries pensions lump sums to a poor political class, etc, etc, etc, etc. is a road to disaster.

Has anybody calculated the possible cost of all of this to Big Pharma in Ireland? Either way, Pharma will be hit by equal tariffs, whether they move back to the U.S or stay. If they move, they will have to recruit thousands, spend billions on new factories etc, etc, which will take more than 4 years and then pass on these costs to the US public, who are already paying some of the highest drug prices in the World. And the likelihood is that when the E.U. retaliates with similar tariffs, Trump & Co. will realise the cost to his base and the tariffs will be dropped, but Pharma will already needlessly spent billions on Trump’s whim.
Ireland & EU need to protect the ‘eggs’ in our basket now and begin to diversify our economy away from big US companies. So I certainly would not be worried about Pharma moving.
And while the E.U. are at it, why do they not put in a claim on Ukraines ‘rare minerals’ , after all they are the ones that are going to have to rebuild it and offer Greenland a greater voice within the E.U.

True, EU car manufacturing is gone to the dogs for years, Volvo built in China, VW nosediving, Mercs with Citroen and Results with Ford engines, Opel plants closed, the list goes on. Focus on ev was probably the wrong move … But none of this is Trump’s responsibility.

Now they’re looking to move war hardware manufacturing into VW plants and ‘introducing’ SIU to access private income to finance their warmongering.

The global crash was precipitated by sub prime morgages in the US which crashed several banks, this effected cofidence in the system and caused a wave through the whole system.

Soon after, Volkswagen cargo vans and pickup trucks, the intended targets, “practically disappeared from the U.S. market.”[4]

As a direct result of the a Tax, Japanese automakers Toyota (with its Publica, Crown, and Corona coupe utes), Datsun (Sunny truck), Isuzu (Wasp), and Mazda (Familia), which were selling pickup trucks, coupe utility vehicles, and panel deliveries in the US at the time, pulled these models out of the North American and Caribbean markets and did not bring over many models sold elsewhere.”

Is this not just going to affect the American citizen rather than impact Ireland? If America doesn’t produce pharmaceuticals, the American people will still have to buy them. The tariff will only affect the end user, who will have to pay even more extortionate prices than they already do; the manufacturers don’t pay the tariffs, the importers do. As someone who worked in the pharma industry, these companies have huge billion-dollar investments all across Ireland and Europe; it wouldn’t make financial sense to move or set up in the states if there is little to no competition in the USA. The other thing is, as Elon pointed out recently, there is a huge talent deficit in the USA as well. With all the deporting of immigrants and tourists, it would be extremely difficult to get workers with appropriate skills. Pharma tariffs will mostly only affect Americans negatively in this scenario.

@Darius Guppy: Just to give my limited POV on all this. I worked for a large, billion-dollar, American company. Medical sector. They acquired a new, up-and-coming product from a small US startup company. They decided to move the further development and production of said product to Ireland. The reason for this was the already established R&D division and the highly skilled workforce that was unavailable in the USA. That project cost almost 2 billion to get to market, including the transfer of operations to Ireland. For one product. Imagine the cost of taking the multiple product lines the company manufactures in Ireland and globally outside of the USA and setting up in the USA. It wouldn’t be feasible to move these, and with no American-based alternatives, they will just let the end user absorb the cost of the tariffs. Most of what American consumers pay for drugs like Ozempic is just pure profit for pharmaceutical and insurance companies.

It costs 15% as much in Denmark as in the US and they ain’t selling it at a loss there.

They could reduce their prices by 25% to absorb the cost of tariffs and still make a huge profit.

Trade wars are like a battle where the combatants stand in a circle and takes turns punching themselves in the face as hard as they can. The only way to win is to be a conscious objector. The EU needs to start comprehending basic economics and abstain from getting into any tit-for-tat tariff increases with America. The idea that they will “protect workers” is economically illiterate insanity. There has never been a single example of any tariffs saving more jobs than they cut. The EU needs to abolish all tariffs and allow free trade to actually flourish. They talk the talk but they don’t walk the walk at the moment. Now the left-wing bureaucrats at the EU Commission want to strengthen trade links with China, as if they are somehow better when it comes to slapping on needless tariffs.

@Leonard Barry: My criticism lies with the strategy of the EU Commission in general, which happens to be full of left-wing individuals who don’t have a bull’s notion about basic economics. You don’t put a fire out by adding more fuel to it! The EU talks a big game about free trade, but they’re just as bad as Donald Trump and I’m extremely critical of this knee-jerk reaction. There has been a grand total of zero examples of reciprocity ever saving more jobs than it loses when it comes to tariffs. The Left isn’t a monolith, that’s for sure, but they all don’t understand how tariffs work and this behaviour by the EU shows that. I think Netanyahu is a brilliant leader and one of the best in the world at the moment along with Milei and Modi. However, I don’t recall him curing blindness!

Looking at Trump’s smug, unattractive mugshot, it’s obvious why Melania wore a very broad-brimmed hat to the inauguration!!
As for his on-off tariffs, Trump’s ignorance of non-mercantilist trade in an interconnected, globalised world is economically obtuse. The possibility of global companies relocating to the US is much more problematic and time-consuming than he thinks and would negatively impact American consumers in any case. Pharmaceutical companies in Ireland, for example, have invested hugely here and have an expert and highly skilled workforce. So, they might at least think twice before going back to the US. The old adage that there are only losers ( and Trump doesn’t like “losers” !!) in a trade war is invariably true.

@James Hanley: Think more about this. It’s a beginning of negotiations with President Trump, simple. He plays the art of the deal, hit them with tariffs, they retaliate, hit again, they concede. Renegotiate a better deal, done. Move on. What he is doing as well is those risk adverse companies who can’t wait for uncertainty, invest, and very publicly announce it they will create plants in US. Johnson and Johnson, Eli Lilly, both large employers here have done this. This buys time and gets them off the radar for now. It’s a constant negotiation game and similar to any board gsme like Go. It’s not capturing the other person’s pieces, it’s taking all their territory. So Ireland has a bunch of stooges to negotiate with President Trump’s trans, and it will get a worse deal, but it will still retain its pharmaceutical industry, but with less revenue and volumes.

‘negotiated’ the USMCA to replace it in 2020. He’s now calling, what he personally negotiated, a ‘bad deal’ as if someone else and not he was responsible for it, and arbitrarily imposing sanctions . He, like his mentor Putin, isn’t to be trusted and his signature not worth the paper it’s written on. He thrives on chaos and disarray and his pals get wealthier.

The money laundering days are numbered and all the wokery that the Irish people are suffering from Obama and Biden legacy may get washed away as they realise they must bow down to President Trump. With it I hope all the other scams for the cronies will wilt, but we all know tax payer will be hammered to pay for this. This country is a permanent joke with the priority being speaking rights of criminals in the Dail and waving Hezzbollah flags or protesting Tesla cars.
