Status yellow warning for snow and ice in place for 13 counties as temperatures set to drop

The alert is in place in counties Cavan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Westmeath and all of Connacht.

LAST UPDATE | 13 Mar 2023

A STATUS YELLOW warning for snow and ice is in place as Met Éireann warned that wintry showers will lead to icy conditions in some areas from tonight.

The warning affects counties Cavan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Westmeath and all of Connacht and will remain in place until 12pm tomorrow.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised of potentially hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths as a result of wintry showers that will lead to icy conditions in some areas tonight and tomorrow morning.

A similar alert is in place from 5pm this evening until 11am tomorrow in counties Antrim, Down, Derry and Tyrone.

Met Éireann said tonight will see clear spells and scattered wintry showers, which will be heavy in the north with a chance of hail or thunder. Lowest temperatures will be between -2 to 3 degrees.

The forecaster said moderate to fresh northwest winds will be strong at times along some Atlantic coasts, though winds will largely ease light inland overnight.

Frost and ice will develop on some untreated roads and paths overnight and last until tomorrow, which is set to be a cold and breezy day with sunny spells and scattered showers of rain, sleet or hail.

Snow will become confined to mountains and there will also be a chance of thunder, but it will become largely dry and clear during the evening. Temperatures will reach highs of 4 to 7 degrees in moderate to fresh and gusty northwest winds.

Overall, Met Éireann forecasts an unsettled week ahead, with rain or showers on most days.

    @Chris Gaffney: This might help:

    “A status yellow weather alert is given to warn those at risk from certain weather because of their location and/or their activity. It advises these people to take preventative action. Expected weather conditions in a status yellow alert do not pose an immediate risk to the general population.”

    So, a yellow warning for snow/ice means that if you are out driving tonight you need to be careful. You OK with that?
