FORMER OLYMPIC RUNNER Oscar Pistorius is expected to attend a parole hearing that will decide if he can be released from prison, 10 years after killing his girlfriend.
He was convicted of killing Reeva Steenkamp by shooting her multiple times through a toilet door in his home on Valentine’s Day 2013.
He could leave Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Pretoria on Friday if his parole is granted, although the Department of Corrections said the process may take days to finalise if his application is successful.
Steenkamp’s parents, Barry and June Steenkamp, have said they oppose Pistorius’ release and are allowed to address the parole board at his hearing. A submission by a victim’s relatives is one of numerous factors taken into account.
“He is a murderer. He should remain in jail,” Mr Steenkamp said in an interview published last month, on the 10th anniversary of his daughter’s killing.
The Department of Corrections declined to give details on Pistorius’s hearing, saying it was “an internal matter” like any other parole hearing.
According to guidelines, the board will consider the offence Pistorius was convicted of, his conduct and disciplinary record in prison, whether he took part in educational or other training courses, his mental and physical state, whether he is likely to “relapse into crime” and the risk he poses to the public.
Legal expert Neo Mashele said “Generally speaking, the behaviour of the offender is the most important consideration.” Pistorius’s parole lawyer, Julian Knight, previously said the athlete had been a “model prisoner”.
Pistorius, 36, was ultimately convicted of murder after prosecutors appealed against an initial conviction for culpable homicide, which is comparable to manslaughter.
He was eventually sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison in 2017, again after a prosecution appeal against a lighter sentence.
Offenders in South Africa convicted of serious crimes must serve at least half their sentence before being considered for parole. Pistorius has done that after taking into account the time he served in jail from late 2014 while the appeals in his case were heard.
He could be released on full parole or placed on day parole, where he would be allowed to live and work in the community during the day but have to return to prison at night.
He could also be placed under correctional supervision, which means he would be released but have to spend some of his time during the week at a correctional centre.
Pistorius’s parole could be denied, where the board usually asks the offender to reapply at a later stage.
He had both his lower legs amputated as a baby and walks with prosthetics. The multiple Paralympic champion was once hailed as an inspirational figure, but his murder trial and downfall captivated the world.
His crime eventually led to him being sent to Kgosi Mampuru II maximum security prison, one of South Africa’s most notorious. He was moved to Atteridgeville in 2016 because that facility is better suited to disabled prisoners.
Reports claim he had at one point grown a beard, gained weight and taken up smoking, and was unrecognisable from the elite athlete who competed against able-bodied runners on his carbon-fibre blades at the 2012 London Olympics.
He has spent much of his time working in an area of the prison grounds where vegetables are grown, sometimes driving a tractor. His father, Henke Pistorius, said in a 2018 interview that he was running bible classes for other inmates.
There have also been flashes of trouble. Pistorius sustained an injury in an altercation with another inmate over a public telephone in 2017. A year earlier, he received treatment for injuries to his wrists, which his family denied were a result of him harming himself.
Pistorius has been seeking parole since 2021 but a hearing that year was cancelled partly because he had not yet met with Mr and Mrs Steenkamp in a process known as a victim-offender dialogue.
He claims he shot 29-year-old Ms Steenkamp by mistake with his licensed pistol because he thought she was a dangerous intruder.

Rosa Parks was an activist for black rights and at the time the white population said it was a set up that she wanted to sit on a whites only seat on a bus. She was highlighting bigotry and discrimination and that is exactly what this individual done and he succeeded according to a court of law. And you scold him for this ?

Making a statement is something different, or asking a question, which was the case in what she said, is not comparative, it’s a question, such requires an answer.

She used ISIS as an example of what the expected reaction would be if the cake shop refused to make it and no one would object to that.
I think that’s more to the do with the choice of the cake makers being allowed expression but that doesn’t make it a direct comparison between ISIS & homosexuality

I think she is correct. Regardless of the message a shop owner should be allowed to refuse whoever they like for whatever reason. Is it just me or is it becoming illegal to offend someone?

Happy has nothing to do with it. Religion and skin colour are not likely to be brought up during a transaction. However, if a shop owner did refuse someone on those grounds, it is his shop, it is his decision. Just don’t go to the racist shop and hurt him financially. No one likes a racist. But if a religious person came in and tried to force his beliefs or impose on the shopkeepers own well held beliefs, that’s a different story. Please tell me you see the difference! If not, I’m going to go to Curves and demand a membership then I’ll go to a Ladies hair Salon and demand a men’s haircut then to Catholic Church and demand to hear the Quran then ill head over to my local Bridge club and demand that the average membership age is lifted by 20 years because young people are being discriminated against by OAP’s (There is a sinister fringe among OAP’s and I’m not having it!!! ) Everyone will be correct!!!!!!! I’m part of the LGBT community and I don’t believe that that bakery should have been under any obligation to make a cake with “support gay marriage” on it. As somebody already pointed out, if it was a bakery owned by a gay person I’m sure they wouldn’t want to make a cake with “No to same sex marriage on it”. I think owners should have the right to reject business that may end up involving them in a political campaign. If however, if they had rejected a request to make a wedding cake for a same sex couple then that would be completely wrong in my view. I think there is a subtle difference here. But unfortunately there argument wasn’t that they wanted to stay out of the debate but that they didn’t want to “go against the Bible”.

She doesn’t seem to understand the difference between what is reasonable and what is unreasonable. A reasonable person would make the Gay Pride cake; a reasonable person would not make a pro-ISIS cake. The court case ruling today bears this out. A judge would expect a baker to make the first cake because it is a reasonable request and expectation. No one would be expected to make the second one. The law of the land is based on reason!
This week No campaign activists have been obliquely compared to Nazis and Gay activists obliquely comparedto ISIS. I wonder what fraction of the posters here are equally critical of both.

I don’t know if a few angry nobodies on twitter getting their pants in a bunch constitutes “facing criticism” but you’d have to be out looking to be offended to think that using an analogy is the same as “comparing”, in fact you’d have to be fairly unintelligent to think that’s what she was doing.
Anyone who claims they were ‘hurt’ by her words needs to be ashamed of themselves, both for being stupid and also for suggesting that their emotional fragility accords them some sort of authority.
It’s quite simple – if you can use the government to force a business to produce literature or a product for YOUR event or campaign that the owners don’t agree with, then someone else can use exactly the same law to force YOU to serve at, or work for, or supply, an event or campaign that YOU don’t like.
Coleen, you should really read up on current affairs. The bakery in question agreed to “bake the cake ” as requested, and the customers paid their deposit. However they subsequently changed their minds a few days later.
Had they gone in and requested the cake and been told that they were not in a position to fulfil their request, then their would not have been a problem.
To equate this situation to ISIS is outrages and an insult to the Irish people. Shame on you, you fool.
