Bomb unit deals with two viable devices at Derry council offices

Two viable devices were made safe in the Strand Road area, a residential area on the west side of the river Foyle.

NORTHERN IRISH POLICE remain in attendance at a security alert in a residential area in Derry this morning.

Their presence follows a callout of an Ammunition Technical Officer team to deal with two viable devices in the Strand Road area, close to the Foyle on the western side of the city – and close to the City Council offices.

The area had been closed off to traffic in the early hours, but reopened for passing traffic earlier this morning. There are still restrictions to pedestrian access, however.

A number of residents who were evacuated from their homes have been allowed to return.

What are the chances of us not having a Derry/Londonderry debate?
