4 of a kind: Homes across the country with thatched roofs

Four character-filled homes that are on the market right now.

ASIDE FROM THE instant charm a thatched roof has, they do much more than please the eye. From great insulation to using environmentally friendly materials, it’s not hard to see why they’re an attractive feature to those who like living in rural parts of Ireland.

This week, we’ve sourced four character-filled homes with thatched roofs that are on the market right now.

Killinick, Co Wexford – €320,000

This original thatched cottage has been extended and restored for modern living. Now a three-bed, other spaces include two living rooms (in the original cottage), a kitchen, utility room and two bathrooms. With an overall floor area of about 90 m², it’s a cosy home with great flow and sits on a quarter of an acre. 

The gardens are landscaped and fencing separates the plot from the road. It’s close to what the sunny south east is famed for – resort villages and beaches including Our Ladys Island, Carne beach and Rosslare Strand.

Sneem, Co Kerry – €315,000

Head west to Kerry where you’ll find this traditional cottage that dates to the 1850s. More recently, it was renovated in 2007 but kept many of its charming original features. from the stone walls to the deep windowsills and, of course, the thatched roof. Solid wood floors and granite work tops make for a long lasting interior and with a floor area of 176.50 m², this is a large home, especially for a two-bed. The rooms inside comprise a sitting room with open beam ceiling and an original stone fireplace with stove, a study with another open fire and a guest toilet. The kitchen connects with the dining room and also a utility room. Upstairs is the main bedroom, which has an en suite bathroom, while the remaining four share the family bathroom. 

The cottage sits on a 1.65 acre site and is about five miles from Headford town, so Galway city is under 30 minutes away by car. Castlebar and Westport are only a 40 minute drive as is Knock Airport.

Crosshaven, Co Cork – €250,000

Tide Cottage is ideally located in Crosshaven by the sea that’s within walking distance to Crosshaven village. It sits on a quarter of an acre and has two bedrooms. It was recently deleted from the record of protected structures, which leaves ample opportunities when it comes to renovating and extending. 

It has off-street parking and unrivalled views of the harbour. This would make a wonderful family home after some renovating.
