Poll: Do you ever do your grocery shopping online?

Online grocery shopping has increased in popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic.

THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC changed a lot of things about Ireland, including how we do our shopping.

With the introduction of the first nationwide lockdown in March 2020, many Irish households switched to buying their groceries online. For many people who could not leave their homes this was borne out of necessity.

However, following the pandemic for many households the move to online shopping has stuck. According to consultancy firm Kantar, nearly one in five Irish households now purchase groceries online, which is double the pre-pandemic rate.

This week, Tesco home delivery workers expressed their discontent at roster changes which will see them lose a higher rate of pay for working ‘unsociable’ times.

But there are no signs of grocery stories scaling back their home delivery options.

Today we’re asking, Do you ever do your grocery shopping online?

Poll Results:

No, never  (7954)
I've done it once or twice (3201)
I do it regularly enough (2052)
Yes, always (1740)

I actually enjoy grocery shopping, I don’t like the thought of someone else doing it for me.

@Olive Whyte:I used to aswell, but I’d end up buying stuff I don’t even want, because they might be a euro off em,I know by click and collect,I can add up before I pay with my card, and if it’s a bit dear,I can take stuff off,I’m disabled,my mental health is so bad,coz I’ve no family, and I need my car,coz where i live, and it’s a 08,always something wrong.ive less than 8 thousand kilometers up,since I bought it 3 years ago for 13 hundred, and I’ve a beaten path to the credit union,I’ve honestly 1000s put in,I’m never going to be able to buy a decent car,I swear Olive 24.7,it’s that car has me in such a state

I do all my grocery shopping on line, I have found that I stick to my list , I can click and collect or have it delivered to my home. Best thing ever as I have mobility issues.

I’d be lost without Tesco online shopping and delivery. Having a physical disability that requires me to walk with crutches, I can’t do it myself. The drivers are so helpful.

For the modern family shopping online is key to getting time back in your day. Why waste an hour or so in a shop when you can click and collect?

@Madra: Grand if you have a car for the heavy stuff. I like to browse the fresh veg myself to plan a week’s menu. Often you can buy reduced fresh food and cook up a varied batch of meals to freeze. Instead of being stuck in a rut of eating the same things daily.

@Madra: Because delivery isn’t possible everywhere.

The only shop that will deliver to where I live is a butchers… that I don’t use. I prefer one that doesn’t do any deliveries. They have more gluten-free options.

I don’t need to do this. Luckily, I live within a few minutes’ walk of several supermarkets, and in any case I live on my own and only need to get a few items on any given day.

The once I did do it I was pretty disappointed in what I received as most of it, when received, was within date but only had a bare few days to use it up. I prefer to do it myself as I get to pick what is there with dates that suit me.

For people who can’t cook, I guess it’s a good solution. When you enjoy cooking you get your ideas by browsing fresh fruits and vegetables.

It’s a shame that this country lack of regulars markets, I would love to go to a market twice a week.

I do the click and collect in Tesco, once u spend 30 euro,u don’t have to pay to have it brought out to the car,and I couldn’t find fault with my local Tesco in Tipperary Town,I have autoimmunes so pushing the trolley,1 of them,I have to constantly drink water, every week I get 5 packs of 6×2 litres,il be honest I’m angry over the cost, they put up each pack by a euro,so it’s an extra fiver a week,I live alone have no family,i need a car where I live,so I’m struggling with the cost,10 out of 10 for people who can do a shop, only buy exactly what the need,I’m the opposite,if I see something reduced,il buy it,and when I get home,I’m raging,I need to be kept out of shops

    Unsociable hours

You normally work for at least 3 hours between midnight and 7am
At least half of your working hours in a year are during these hours.
Tesco driver’s don’t qualify to be labelled as such.
Sure most security workers dont get it either despite working overnight.

I did it once from Tesco years ago because I was busy working and needed a bug shop I couldn’t carry, don’t have a car. It was ok, but the delivery cost put me off doing it again. I’m not sure what the options are like these days and cost of delivery. I remember checking out Aldi when they joined Deliveroo in the early days but a lot of their cheaper own brand stock weren’t on the app and only the more expensive branded stuff and fewer options. The delivery charge and “extra charges” also seemed too much so I emptied the basket and didn’t go back. If there are better options or if they’ve improved, I’d definitely consider doing big shops this way with the stuff I can’t carry.
