1-7 for O'Callaghan as Dublin storm into Leinster semi-final with 27-point win

The sides met in O’Moore Park.

Dublin 4-30

Laois 2-9

THE NUMBERS TELL the tale as defending champions Dublin stormed into the Leinster SFC semi-final with a 27-point victory over Laois in O’Moore Park.

Dublin were ruthlessly efficient throughout the afternoon, as Con O’Callaghan, Colm Basquel, Ciarán Kilkenny and Lee Gannon all scored goals in the first half. They had 11 different scorers on their report card by the full-time whistle, with O’Callaghan helping himself to 1-7. Eoin Lowry did bag two goals for Laois, but the difference in quality was clear from the outset.

After trading wides in the opening minutes, Paul Kingston gave the hosts an early lead as he tapped the ball over the bar from close range.

Mannion quickly produced the leveller following a Laois defensive error, before O’Callaghan and Basquel combined for 2-1 in three minutes to put Dublin ahead.

Brian Fenton kept the punishment coming with a point from the next score and by the 11th minute, the Leinster 13-in-a-row chasers were leading by 2-4 to 0-1. Mark Barry chalked up a badly needed point for Laois in the 12th minute.

Laois then managed to engineer a goal-scoring opportunity as Evan O’Carroll found a crack in the Dublin cover after collecting a long ball in. James McCarthy lunged in with a crucial challenge on the edge of the square and Kingston hit his second point of the afternoon from the resultant free.

Mark Timmons cut the gap further with a fine long-range effort, but that marked the end of Laois’ scoring spurt as they went without another point for the rest of the first half.

Meanwhile, Dublin had another 2-11 to give before the break. O’Callaghan and Basquel got Dublin’s scoreboard moving again with the Cuala forward scoring from a mark.

Mannion and O’Callaghan added frees to leave 10 points separating the sides as Dublin’s attacking superiority became more and more apparent. Lee Gannon notched their third goal shortly before the half-hour mark and when Ciarán Kilkenny opened his account on 27 minutes, Dublin had four of their six forwards on the scoreboard.

And by half-time, all six had their names on the Dublin scoreboard as Seán Bugler and Ross McGarry both found their range, while Kilkenny brought his first-half tally to 1-1 with goal number four for the visitors. Both sides retreated to the half-time break with the scoreline reading 4-15 to 0-4 in Dublin’s favour.

O’Callaghan got Dublin off the mark with his second mark of the day to put 1-5 to his name. Having gone without a score since the 16th minute, Kingston pointed for Laois with his second free of the day. Barry and Basquel then traded points before Eoin Lowry hit a brace of vital goals for the hosts in as many minutes.

His first was a beautiful strike while his second was a gift for Laois following a mistake in the Dublin defence in the 44th minute. Kingston played an important role in the score as he popped the ball over the head of the Dublin keeper David O’Hanlon for Lowry to palm into the net.

That scoring spree prompted another rally from Dublin as O’Callaghan, Kilkenny, Fenton and corner-back Cian Murphy all split the posts to extend their dominance.

Dessie Farrell sent in replacements with fresh legs throughout the final quarter as the pace dropped in the game. Dean Rock made a strong claim for a starting spot the next day with three points after his introduction. That was effectively getting game time in the legs before their semi-final outing, while for Laois, it’s destination Tailteann Cup.

Laois scorers: Paul Kingston 0-3 2f, Eoin Lowry 2-0, Mark Barry 0-2 1 mark, Mark Timmons, Evan O’Carroll  0-2, 1f 1 mark, Padraig Kirwan 0-1 each.

Plenty of other shops sure, but people who do large shops generally have a routine to maximize their savings, and minimize time spent shopping. Also, people have brands and products they like to purchase, and changing all that is a lot of effort for someone who works full time.

I wouldn’t call then scabs many people don’t know what a scab is or what’s even happening with dunnes. Also many people just shop there because it’s close or convenient. Not to mention dunnes did a massive online sale which many wouldn’t even see as passing the picket, my mother included!

Solidarity with the workers and hopefully our government will pass legislation to end these zero hour contracts.

Solidarity with the Dunnes workers. Paying all workers a decent wage is in the interests of the economy and society as a whole. Business wants its customers to have as much money in their pockets as possible to purchase their products and services and generate profits. In contrast, each individual firm wants to pay their workers as little as possible in order to maximize profit.
In the macro economy, the workers ARE the customers and this glaring contradiction is lost on the slavering neo liberals eternally demanding wage cuts and ‘flexibility’ in the labour market.

It’s always aggregate demand and spending through the whole economy that ultimately creates and maintains jobs. Someone’s spending is always someone else’s job and income as the macro economy is circular. It is the aggregate spending of everyone in the economy, public, private, individuals and businesses that maintains and creates employment. We have seen the result of slashed government and private sector spending over the past 7 years of Austerity reflected in our massive dole queues and planes full of emigrants.

I have not done any shopping there since there employee issues, but can tell you the car parks are as full as ever, IMO I don’t see them suffering with sales because of the strike, I only see the employees gaining ground with dunnes by being on strike, that’s when it cost dunnes sales, and one day strikes will not work, it has to be all out strike until the issue is settled, simple, no other real way of bringing this to closer anytime soon,

Waddler, it sounds almost as if you believe the money multiplier is a real thing in your above essay, but surely not because if that were the case printing as much money as we could ever want would have a detrimental effect on the value of the currency. If I didn’t know better, I’d say you’re contradicting yourself.

No contradiction Egg. The money multiplier is a concept of fractional reserve banking which itself is an incorrect understanding of how the banking system works. Fractional reserve argues that bank lending to business and individuals is limited by the central bank reserves which the commercial bank holds. It isn’t. The banks will lend money to anyone they believe will pay them back and then seek the necessary reserves after the fact which the central bank is effectively obliged to provide.

As explained to you previously. The point at which inflation rises depends on the availability of real resources (goods & services) versus the actual demand for purchase. In other words, the creation of new money is not in itself inflationary if there is sufficient real wealth (goods & services) to buy with that new money. This is especially true if the new money is directed to the productive sectors of the economy for example through infrastructural improvement which leads to GDP growth and so more availability of real resources to purchase.

The modern economy is characterized by an excess of production so there are rarely any shortages of goods & service available for purchase and so significant general inflation is not a concern.

I won’t pass the picket if they are on strike but they aren’t at the moment and surely not shopping there until the whole affair only damages the workers and your pocket. The reason they are doing so well can be put down to the 10 voucher for every 50 spent, as a consumer it’s hard to justify shopping elsewhere, including the Germans, with that offer. They even had the manager on a till in the one i go to a few weeks ago it was so busy.

    Protect Capital,

Any comments on your budy Denis O Brien & Siteserv deal?
I’ve copied and pasted the details below to help jog your memory.

“On March 15, 2012, Denis O’Brien – through his Isle of Man-based acquisition vehicle, Millington – bought Siteserv for €45.4million cash from the IBRC, formerly known as Anglo Irish Bank.
Law firm Arthur Cox represented both IBRC and Millington during the sale.
At the time of the sale, Mr O’Brien owed Anglo hundreds of millions of euro while Siteserv owed Anglo €150million.
The sale involved IBRC agreeing to writing off €100million of Siteserv’s €150million debt.
Mr O’Brien acquired the business on a debt-free basis
In addition, just under €5million was distributed to Siteserv’s shareholders, with them believed to have received €3.92 for every share they owned.………………………
It was reported that Australian hedge fund Anchorage Capital offered a higher price – €52million – but that ‘elements of the offer were considered less attractive then the O’Brien bid’.
It was also reported that French company Altrad claimed it was denied the opportunity to make an offer for Siteserv – saying it had been prepared to offer €60million for the firm but that it was ‘effectively denied the opportunity because its representative was told the Irish group was not for sale…………………
In July 2013, GMC Sierra (a subsidiary of Siteserv) won a State contract to install water meters in Dublin city, the Midlands, Wicklow, Kildare, Offaly, Laois, Mayo, Roscommon, Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim……………….
Last December, Independent TD for Kildare North, Catherine Murphy raised her concerns about GMC Sierra’s water meter contract, in the Dáil, asking how could GMC Sierra be awarded a contract [by former Environment Minister Phil Hogan] for water meters even though it didn’t legally come into existence until July 15, 2013, 15 days after the closing date for bids……………………..”

If you are for zero hr contracts you are for the destruction of the SME sector that rely on the working class who spend almost all of their income with SME`s such as butchers, newsagents keeping 70% of the population in work. Zero hr contacts allow massive companies and multi nationals with thousands of employees make even larger profits while paying less tax. Taking millions out of the economy !

It’s the human condition to generally remember times past fondly while our memories of the negatives diminish, but it doesn’t mean society is regressing. I don’t think I’m as old as you, but I certainly wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to live my life in 1960s Ireland going on the testimonies I’ve heard.

Where did I suggest that the sixties, or indeed any other time in this country’s history was some sort of sunlit paradise? My parents had to emigrate out of this kip in the early 50′s and returned in 1960, and it was no paradise. There was, however, a certain amount of solidarity amongst working people and a sense of community – even if that sense was based on living in poverty and helping each other out, where possible. In the seventies we at least protested – with varying degrees of success. Now the apathy is such that people are astounded at the water protest. Not everthing changes for the better.

Joe, on a point of order, the 18th century term “scabs” refers to workers who work while on a strike, or more specifically, those who are drafted in to replace strikers. The people going in are not scabs, but supporters of the shop (both workers, employers and other supports).

It would be like during an ESB strike, you refused to use electricity, or during the coal miners strike, refused to heat yourself. Pointless and futile, and a stupid action to try and make enemies of people who are not you enemies. But I suspect, you are neither a dunnes worker or a shopper – just a parasite who likes to fester of others disputes; kind of like a scab.

Apologies – I was returning the insult, as I thought you were referring to shoppers as scabs; but you are right it is never ok to insult someone.

    Remember people Tesco take Dunnes.

Also worth noting supervalu and tesco seem to treat their staff best out of the other groceries and thus workers can contribute more back to the economy.

How can those figures be trusted? Dunnes is a private company and do not publish their accounts, and tesco do not split out their revenue from their UK operations …

this is a dammed if you do and dammed if you dont situation. hours will decrease if sales drop or sales increase and management will not budge in inch! or could this be a tesco scam where they are covering up the real damage this has done to the chain??
what i have seen happening is the traditionally busy times have less staff on the tills and the ques are let to form before anything is done about it. ( a little trick they may have learnt from lidl/aldi)!!
the bottom line is the unions and ds management should never have let it get this far. the company have made millions and i dont know why there cant be a little corporate responsibility ! people need a living wage , what is so wrong with that!

I shop in Dunnes and I support the workers. If everybody stops shopping there then the workers lose their jobs which also doesn’t help.
If labour in government were to stick to their principles then they would ban zero or low hour contracts in legislation then workers wouldn’t have to strike to get what should be their right which a living wage for a weeks work. Then again labour and principles in the one sentence, nah!
