President Higgins to meet UK's Charles ahead of tomorrow's coronation

Michael D Higgins will become the first Irish head of state to attend a UK coronation.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins will meet the United Kingdom’s King Charles  tonight before becoming the first Irish head of state to attend a coronation.

Higgins and his wife Sabina will be guests at a reception at Buckingham Palace on the eve of the coronation ceremony in London.

It will be the ninth occasion the two heads of state have met and continues a long-standing friendship between the two.

Higgins and his wife will then attend the coronation tomorrow at Westminster Abbey.

To mark the event, the president and his wife requested the Tree Council of Ireland to plant a native Irish oak tree in the woodland forest of Aurora in Co Wicklow.

The gesture was to acknowledge the King’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is also expected to attend the coronation.

Political leaders from Northern Ireland have also been invited.

Among those who will attend is Sinn Fein vice president Michelle O’Neill in another demonstration of the markedly improved relations between the republican movement and the royal family since the peace process.

The tree in Wicklow should be cut down. The planting of the tree shows such an inferior complex to our neighbours. Surely a so called socialist would not agree with such an expensive ceremony 250 million apparently. Very proud never to have voted for higgins.

@rory Mcgovern: the tree is just a tree, it’s a living thing so why it should be cut down because someone doesn’t agree with the designated reason for its planting is somewhat absurd since the tree would have been planted anyway, designation or no designation. The tree will also be doing a useful job for the environment.
If the majority of the people across the water are happy to live in a democracy with a monarch as head of state and all that that entails that is their business. Meanwhile our President, as our Head of State, is attending the installation if you like, of the Head of State of a neighboring friendly country. Pretty standard diplomacy aside from any fancy trimmings.

Had been reading about President Mary Robinson and didn’t know she was associated with the Workers’ Party after she was with Labour. She also introduced contraception laws, divorce, among other liberalising laws. She seemed to pave the way for many liberties we see today.
