Russia strikes Ukraine medical facility, killing at least two people

A video distributed by officials showed a blaze ripping through a two-storey building in Dnipro.

LAST UPDATE | 26 May 2023

RUSSIAN MISSILES HAVE hit a medical clinic in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, killing at least two people, as Russia blamed Kyiv for dozens of strikes on its southern Belgorod region.

In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the Ukraine conflict with China’s special envoy Li Hui, blaming Ukraine and Western countries for creating “serious obstacles” to resuming peace talks.

In Belgorod in southern Russia, the governor said the Ukrainian military was responsible for dozens of artillery, mortar and drone attacks across the region but reported no casualties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a video of smoke billowing from roofless buildings with blown-out windows after the attack that authorities said had left 30 people injured including two boys aged three and six.

The head of the regional military administration Sergiy Lysak said that Russia struck a residential area with a medical and veterinary clinic and high-rise blocks.

Zelenskyy said that by hitting civilian medical facilities, “Russian terrorists once again confirm their status of fighters against everything humane and honest.”

US Senator Lindsey Graham, on his third visit to Ukraine, condemned the attack as a war crime.

“There was a hospital bomb today. Just over 500 medical facilities have been hit by the Russians. A war crime was committed while I was here, just one of many war crimes,” he said.

The Russian defence ministry said that its strikes on Ukraine had targeted arms depots and that all the assigned targets had been hit.

Ukrainian journalists posted video footage of rescuers helping people with blood on their faces escape from the clinic through corridors full of rubble.

The attack came after Russian forces earlier this week targeted Dnipro in a late night strike with 16 missiles and 20 attack drones.

The industrial hub, which had nearly one million inhabitants before the war, lies around 125 kilometres from the current front line.

‘Hostile environment’

The announcement of the attack on Dnipro came as Belgorod governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said at least five districts of his region in southern Russia had been repeatedly hit by Ukrainian forces over the last 24 hours.

The districts had been attacked by drones, mortars and artillery and the village of Kozinka was struck more than 130 times, he said.

In a rare attack on the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, two drones damaged buildings in the city centre, officials said, adding that there were no casualties.

The claims of fresh strikes in the Belgorod region came after an unprecedented two-day incursion from Ukraine claimed by two anti-Kremlin groups this week, with Russia using its air force and artillery to push back the fighters.

Russia’s defence ministry has vowed an “extremely harsh” response to any further attacks on its soil.

The apparent exchange of artillery and missile fire reported today came one day after Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko said Russia had begun the transfer of nuclear weapons to his tightly controlled country.

The Kremlin, however, stopped short of confirming the start of the transfer, saying only Russia’s ally was seeing “aggressive statements” from neighbouring countries.

“Belarus is in a very, very hostile environment,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

In Washington, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described Russia’s move as “yet another example of making irresponsible and provocative choices”.

In Brazil, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has declined an invitation to travel to Saint Petersburg during a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I thanked (Putin) for an invitation to go to the International Economic Forum in Saint Petersburg and replied that I cannot go to Russia at this time,” wrote Lula on Twitter about the event scheduled for June 14-17.

China envoy in Moscow

Putin discussed Ukraine with the Brazilian president, telling him the Kremlin was “open” to dialogue and accusing Kyiv and the West of “blocking” talks, the Kremlin said.

Putin’s top diplomat Lavrov hosted China’s envoy Li, praising Beijing for its “balanced” position on Ukraine.

Li’s visit to the Russian capital came after he met Zelensky in Kyiv earlier this month.

The foreign ministry in Moscow also made an official diplomatic protest aimed at the US embassy for what it said were recent US comments condoning alleged Ukrainian attacks on Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula.

In Washington, the State Department said that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will next week visit new NATO member Finland, where he will deliver a speech championing Ukraine’s defence against Russia.

Earlier today, military officials in Kyiv said Russian forces launched aerial attacks on the capital overnight, adding that all the missiles were intercepted and destroyed.

“Another air attack on Kyiv, the 13th in a row since the beginning of May! And, as always, at night time,” the city’s military administration said on its Telegram account.

@Awkward Seal: wasn’t actually made in jest. It was made to gain this publicity because demand for alternatives to dairy based milk is increasing.

All you have to do is look at Danone who bought Alpro (biggest plans based globally) for €11 billion in 2016. That is the level of competition that the Dairy Council is seeing and they are rightly shi**ing themselves.

@Eoin O Shea: you can’t bate a nice big glass of real milk or some real butter on your toast :p But in all seriousness what percentage of people don’t consume dairy products? It must be tiny. Anecdotal evidence aside I think they’re going to be alright.

Drinking milk is akin to religious indoctrination in this country. Just because we were reared on, it doesn’t mean it’s good for us. Milk is for the calf, not for human consumption.

@Presuming Ed: What’s the plan if everyone stops drinking milk tomorrow Ed? We’ve bred cows so that they produce more milk than a calf could ever hope to drink and will literally die if they’re not milked. So do we continue milking them and just dump it down the drains or let the dairy cow go extinct?

No soy “milk” or almond “milk” etc. They’re not allowed to use the term “milk” even though it’s what everyone calls them. And I wonder what group was petty enough to lobby for labelling rules like that…

Also, just because it may be marketed as organic doesn’t not mean it is not genetically modified.

@eastsmer: dairy cows in Ireland are artificially inseminated to keep them pregnant so they lactate, this is then followed by a dry off period (usually at least 3 months) allowing the teets to recover. This is done annually & it’s not uncommon that some cows to be given a year out, if you are thinking of growth hormones they are not allowed here but there is a very strict code of conduct on cattle welfare & there family lines

One thing worth watching is the documentary Food Inc. It’s on Netflix now. Even the chicken was redesigned for packaging. The way that Monsanto go after any seed savers or even farmers that have their crops next to Monsanto seeds and have it wind blown onto theirs are sued by them. It’s a massive horrible subject.

Danone bought Alpro in 2016 for €11 billion. The NDC knew they were facing this and decided to push the boundaries with completely false advertising.

Cows are mammals, as are humans. The milk supply dries up when it is not required…as in when the calf has grown to a size that it can sustain itself. That’s what milk is, a growth liquid to add mass and weight to a calf, exactly the same as humans.

@Eoin O Shea: You know that we’ve selectively breeding the dairy cow for millennia right? They massively overproduce way more milk than a calf could ever consume, and they continue producing long after the calves have weaned. And if they don’t get milked then? Long, agonizing death. So what’d happen if everyone stopped drinking milk tomorrow is four possibilities. 1) We continue milking cows but dump it all down the sewer. 2) We just release them into the wild to die slow, painful deaths. 3) Farmers sell them for beef to make some money 4) We kill them all to prevent that slow and painful death.

Dairy cows overproduce because we’ve been selectively breeding them for millennia to the point they will literally die if not milked and a calf can’t drink enough. Same way we’ve been sheep for so long that if we don’t shear them they’ll die (slowly and painfully, rotting from the inside out). Can we just all agree that we need to label things correctly? For example, choclate bars that contain dairy milk are know legally as Dairy Milk Chocolate.

So lets just stop the fighting of whos right and just enjoy some delicious nut juice?

Maybe a handy slogan will help…..
Nut juice…its ready when you are…..tired of teet, get it from the nuts NUT JUICE w/new almond and hazelnut flavour.

    There all settled :)

If you have IBS or you often get constipated or diarrhoea just try going off milk and cheese for a few months, if it doesn’t work, or you decide that it is worth it because cheese is so delicious, just go back to it. See what happens. I dare ya.

Almond milk-substitute is delicious and very affordable in Aldi and Tesco

Milk squeezed out of a cow…..well she doesn’t fart it out now lads in fairness. Doesn’t hurt her in anyway and she’s damn glad of the relief. The end. Drive on. Bigger fish to fry in this world tbh.
