No domestic flight ban on the cards for Ireland as Taoiseach says we're not the same as France

Domestic flights are very important to some of Ireland’s most remote areas, says Varadkar.

TAOISEACH LEO VARADKAR has indicated that Ireland will not be following in France’s footsteps in banning short flights that can be replaced by train journeys under 2.5 hours.

Speaking at Bloom in the Phoenix Park today, he said that domestic flights are necessary in Ireland.

“We have domestic flights in Ireland, between Dublin and Kerry and that’s entirely commercial and there’s one between Dublin and Donegal, and that’s a PSO,” he said.

Somewhere like Donegal “is relatively remote”, he said, stating there’s no train service and no motorway.

“It’s not the same as France. They have been building high speed trains for 100 years, they have underground systems, motorway systems. It’s a country that’s been wealthy for 100 years – we’ve only been wealthy for 20 or 30,” said Varadkar.

Cutting short-haul flights that can be taken using other forms of transport has been the focus of some calls to help reduce the sector’s heavy burden on the environment.

Responding to a question by The Journal this week, Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary criticised France’s short haul flight ban, claiming that exceptions to the ban for connecting flights would mean that “not a single flight” would be cancelled.

Varadkar said today that there parts of Ireland and our islands where that air service is really important, stating that some people connect to Dublin to receive cancer treatment.

He said that is sometimes missed from the argument.

Ireland is not the same as a mainland European country, said the Taoiseach, stating “we’re a very dispersed population”.

Its true, we’re not the same as France. In France there would have been riots on the streets and these lads would have been thrown out of Leinster House years ago.

@le newlookcoco: And the average speed of trains in France is 195.9 kph v 90.7 kph in Ireland.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/cfy8n8/average_speed_of_trains_in_europe_my_own_research/

That said, taking into account cuing, checking in and security checks at an airport versus just buying a ticket, boarding a train and leaving in 10 – 20 minutes, maybe the difference isn’t that much even accounting for our slow trains. But if France had our slow trains, that would be different.

A study by Sweden’s Linnaeus University found only 11% of the world’s population took a commercial flight in 2018 and just 4% of those journeys were overseas, and the frequent flyers who comprise just 1% of the world’s population generate half of the global aviation industry’s carbon emissions. Six thousand private jets used Irish airports last year the busiest route being between Dublin and London and they paid zero tax on aviation fuel while the government just increased excise duty on fuel for the rest of us to drive our cars. Dublin Airport was found to be the most polluting facility in Ireland by Climate Trace, but are planning to expand by millions of passengers per year. We only seem to be in a climate crisis when it suits the government or maybe it’s just easier to blame the cows.

We do need our domestic flights, so glad Varadkar has finally said something that I can agree with.
We aren’t the only small European country with domestic flights either, Iceland, Norway, Sweden have them too.
We are always looking at France, Germany and Britain to see what they’re doing while the Nordic countries are more in line with us, geographically and demographically.
Domestic flights should continue. In fact, we could probably be doing with more too, like Dublin – Aran Islands, Cork – Belfast.
I’m saying that…our rail infrastructure is a joke. Two congested lines, Dublin – Cork and Dublin to Belfast with a few feeder lines from the west essentially.
A country like Ireland could easily have high speed lines. Atleast connecting our major cities like Cork, Belfast, Dublin and Galway. I always find it funny that countries that our actually not as wealthy as us, can have some of the worlds best transportation infrastructure.
    Even Kyiv has a metro.
    Why can’t we??

The trains here are not good. The enterprise to Belfast is so slow. It takes well over two hours and crawls along for most of the trip. That journey time should be cut in half. Same for lines to Cork and other areas. When it’d just as fast or sometimes faster to drive what’s the point? The train isn’t cheap either.
