AT LEAST 10 people died today a road traffic collision in central Canada’s Manitoba province, local media reported.
Canadian police said on Twitter that officers were responding to a “mass casualty collision” near the town of Carberry, west of Winnipeg, and that first responders and other Royal Canadian Mounted Police units were on the scene.
According to media reports, the accident involved a semi-trailer truck and a minivan specialised in transporting disabled people.
“My heart breaks hearing the news of the tragic accident near Carberry. My most sincere condolences go out to all those involved,” tweeted Manitoba’s premier Heather Stefanson.
She said flags at the province’s legislative building have been lowered to half-staff “out of respect for those we have tragically lost.”
Authorities said the highway was closed in both directions and they were asking motorists to avoid the area.
According to Nirmesh Vadera, who works near the accident site in a roadside hotel restaurant, numerous emergency vehicles and two helicopters were at the scene of the crash, which occurred around midday.
“It was really, really surreal to see the extent of (the accident), because I’ve never seen this kind of fire on any vehicle,” Vadera told AFP by telephone, adding there was lots of smoke visible around the site.
He said a semi-trailer truck was lying on its side along the roadway, while a smaller vehicle was in flames.

The indo journalists used the words “large crowd” and “trapped him in his house”.. From what I saw there was about 9 people involved and they were quite quiet just holding signs… As I say, not in good taste, but this is blown way out of proportion, and I’d be worried about infringements/chipping away at free speech and freedom of assembly.

Any groups that call themselves “battalions”, “flying columns” and have blokes wearing balaclavas on their social media pages are not there for a candlelight vigil. There was a baby and mother inside the house and a gang outside the front garden. It’s intimidation and while I’m no fan of Harris and the blue shirts, as a country we’re better than these mobs. Take the protests to the Dail or city centre streets but people should be allowed to go to their home without intimidation.

It is about time people started making politicians personally responsible for actions and inactions that are causing thousands of innocent people to die inappropriately and with no dignity.
What hypocrisy. Politicians think it’s not appropriate that they should be inconvenienced at their home, when they are supporting and making choices that are causing a majority of people hardships in ‘their’ own homes. Hardships, not just inconvenience and these hardships are real and 365 days a year. Not just a day.
Decimated health services, not just causing inconvenience but unnecessary deaths. Unequal taxation. Unequal job opportunities. Facilitating tax avoidance for super wealthy international businesses and at the same time, neglecting indigenous industry.
Maybe if the politicians were made to feel uncomfortable in ‘their’ own homes, they might have more consideration for those that they are responsible for hammering. The media, once again, one sided in favour of the oppressors, instead of the oppressed. Why aren’t the journalists getting the views of those that are affected by the disaster that is called our ‘Health Service’. Ask them about fairness?

These politicians talk about democracy but the reality is that the only day that most of these politicians recognise democracy is on election day. Every other day to them is dictatorship day with regards to the public. It only matters to them what the dail thinks every other day. Every day they’re taking center stage unopposed in the media telling us that they’re right and everybody else is wrong, even on times when everybody knows its blatantly obvious that they’re wrong. If there was true democracy in ireland, we’d have had a election by now and harris would be gone.

How many times did the state intimidate people trying to seek justice. Harris has no problem in banks hiring thugs to intimidate during evictions. According to all reports it was a peaceful protest. Unfortunately the media as usual jumped all over the story, downside it deflected the incompetence of Harris and his cohorts.

I believe in democratic peaceful protest (attended large water protests)but absolutely not protests of any type at politicians family homes,that is completely wrong in my view&is intimidating to his family.
This is my view:Governments make policies and consequences can seriously affect ordinary people’s lives, communities and services so protest against those policies ONLY.Many people who go into politics are genuine and try their best but when policies are bad/ill thought out people have the right to protest,it’s one of the cornerstones of democracy.But 2 wrongs don’t make a right by protesting outside someone’s family home,it’s counterproductive & unacceptable.So absolutely by all means peaceful protest but not at politicians family homes please!
@Nuala Mc Namara: you are too kind/naive. 1. Protests outside the Dail or offices are completely ignored. Why? Because there is no personal suffering.
2. Harris is the captain of the hse ship, as such he is responsible for what happens and what is happening is that great numbers are suffering terribly because of the decimation of the health service.
Harris and FG’s choices have impacted very personally on very large numbers in Irish society. Isnt it only fair that incompetent politicians see what it’s like to be personally targeted? One hour of discomfort, while others suffer 24/7/365 as a result of his actions/inactions. If we are to effect change then more protests of this nature need to be carried out.
It beggars belief that people can chose Harris over those more deserving of our sympathy.
@John O’Hara: John,the large water peaceful protests couldn’t be ignored and could not be critized because they were peaceful so couldn’t be spun by Government!But protests outside Minister’s homes,no matter how peaceful is wrong in my view and is intimidating to his family.Also it’s counterproductive as it will be open to spin.Plus the points you try to make by protesting outside a family home are completely lost too! That won’t change Government policies!
I criticize many Governments policies too that have serious consequences on society, communities and services & make crisis which turn into emergencies with no effective preventative actions to tackle them.I explain why I criticize policies.I also use my vote in General Elections.If there’s a large peaceful protest I will attend it,those types of protests can’t be ignored or spun.
It was during Minister’ Harris’s time as Minister for Health that the 10year Slaintecare plan approved which will improve the health service,also the independent HSE board was reinstated.These need time to work..
If you want change then read RIGHT TO CHANGE policies which Right to Water followed,it included health,housing,etc not just water and at those large Dublin protests,they too were highlighted during speeches!Also before last General Election 2016 many politicians and different political parties agreed the principles of Right to Change policies.2/3of TDs elected to Dail on their policies re water plus other Right to Change principles.That affected change and it was peaceful and democratic!
So that’s how to effect change!

I think it shows the frustration that people are feeling. I understand his fear at what happened and think it wrong, but there is a certain smugness about harris . Most recently seeking to remove legal aid from those being dragged through the courts the failed banks bailed out by those people. Everyone one of them should face protests. So how do politicians think families feel when they get thrown out of their homes by thugs sent by their untouchable and corrupt bankers?
FG has repeatedly imposed unfair taxes and charges and cuts essentially thru fear and intimidation. A lot of damage to Ireland’s social structure, untold amounts of distress to individuals and families directly as a result of their policies, including suicides which I feel FG is directly responsible for, while they themselves are carefully insulated.
