What is wrong with this country and the amount of lawlessness amongst its citizenry. Quinn, Drumm, Lowry, lawler, Ahern, Shell to Sea, these bog men….. Throw them in jail – you break the law you pay the price. I don’t understand why the taxpayer has to give these people money simply because they show scant regard for our natural heritage and want to keep destroying the bogs simply because they want cheap fuel.

Plynch – absolutely correct. You suggest that ‘rural Ireland’ is some kind of badge of honour. The law is the law; not just for those of us who dwell in towns and cities.

Throw dese bog men in jail for resisting a law imposed on dere land. Thats exactly wat the english nd naxis did. Do u want a dictatorship? These laws are being imposed on land not owned by the government but by the landowners them self. This law has devalued there land. How is this fair?

It’s not paying someone to not break the law. It is compensating those for taking away something they had. If you don’t understand that then I’m sorry for you. But don’t let the facts get in the way of a good gripe.

Compensation schemes like this happen all over Europe. Not unique to us. And is probably a little bit funded by the EU.

So, again, it’s not paying people to not break the law.

And the attitude shown to the rural communities is a disgrace.

The comment about driving tractors on motorways, check your facts, they are allowed.

Check the rules on the motorway entry boards, they qualify.

And don’t ever confuse the rules of the road for the Law. They differ slightly.

Eilish Deegan, there has been consequences though you are just choosing to ignore them…..loss of bog land is the outcome.

Just because something has happened for thousands of years doesn’t make it ok, just think of what people used to do but weren’t always happy about it when it changed.

    - It used to be the norm to cut down local woodlands so you could light a fire, this had to stop and be regulated or we’d have nothing left (frankly this didn’t stop soon enough).
    - It used to be ok for farmers to drive cattle (not on a truck but have them walk over days/weeks) on roads from kerry to kilkenny for markets, this had to stop as it would have been insane on modern roads and very dangerous.
    - People used to dump sewage into their local stream or river because it was handy, again this had to stop as the idiots were then drinking this same water and it was causing health issues.

People hate change but like so many things the eu stopping bog cutting is very much a good thing, but far too many short sighted people just think about their own pockets then how this wil affect their country in hundreds of years time.

But I’ll settle for destroying somewhere else instead, but only if you lot will give me a tax-free pressie of €23,500. It’s not about the money of course.

Have you ever been to a bog? You are probably right, I imagine some would be quite beautiful. The solution is simple really. Who ever decided that certain bogs should be protected should buy them from their owners instead of passing a law and making them outlaws. By the way to put this in perspective, the majority of Irish bogs are owned by Bord Na Mona (somewhere north of 90% I believe)

Eilish Deegan, you know your right….

Just how could a habitat have survived for thousands of years be suddenly in danger, I mean just look at all the woodlands Ireland has…oh wait…thats “had” because we have feck all but eventually somebody copped onto this and realized something had to be done and people had to stop just cutting them down when they felt like it.

This is no different with bogs, just because they’ve been ignored doesn’t mean that the bog lands in Ireland were not being destroyed,

Lets look at this a different way…….. lets say all these farmers had acres and acres of old growth forests that they owned in Ireland. Now this is the proper old growth forests not one of those new forests thats only been around for say 100-300 years.

Would you think its perfectly ok to destroy more and more of such an ancient forest that can never ever ever be replaced?, this destruction ensures that no future generations will see as much of this old growth forest that exists right now today.

In addition this old growth forests has species that don’t exist anywhere else, is it ok to wipe them out all so you can say “ah sure its ok we did it for thousands of years”?

Just because a person owns the land doesn’t mean they can do what they want with that land, if that was the case we’d have every idiot building whatever they want on their land or dumping whatever chemical they wanted on it so it could affect the local environment.

Your thousands of years excuse is just that, an excuse and it doesn’t cut the reality of the situation.

Species don’t just evolve that quickly I’m afraid so your talking nonsense…this is fact, species have been wiped out in the past and this is also a fact and they will continue to be wiped out due to ignorance.

    Source: http://www.botanicgardens.ie/herb/census/threatnd.htm

Now lets just take one random extent species from that list on the above factual website…..oh lets say “Scheuchzeria palustris”, it used to grow on bog lands but sadly not anymore.

Care to back up your nonsense claims that species just “survive” and are you just going to talk more and more nonsense about how its ok because its been done for thousands of years?

Its evident this is all about the money as these people care nothing about nature and ensuring species and such a natural resource (no different to a old growth forest) exists for future generations.
