HOMELESSNESS CAMPAINGER PETER McVerry has said there is no evidence that the number of people in emergency accommodation will fall in the future.
Homelessness figures in Ireland topped their previous record once again on Friday, with the Department of Housing reporting that 12,441 people were in emergency accommodation in May.
Speaking on Newstalk’s On The Record, McVerry said there is “a growing sense of hopelessness” among homeless people.
He said: “There’s a growing sense that this is their life for years to come because they can’t get out of homelessness.
“[It's] almost impossible to get into the private rented sector, social housing is very very scarce, so they see no future except living in hostels and many of the hostels are not fit for purpose.
“People are being assaulted, their property is being robbed – the hostels are not fit for purpose. And I’ve been saying that for years and nobody cares.”
“It’s not just disappointing. It’s utterly depressing.
“And what is more depressing is that as you look into the future, you don’t see any evidence that those figures are actually going to come down.”
The most recent homelessness figures include 3,699 children, and 8,742 adults.
Campaigners have pointed out that a growing number of those in emergency accommodation are workers.
McVerry said that notices to quit issued at the end of the evictions ban earlier this year will continue to take effect in the coming months, as landlords are required to give a certain amount of notice depending on how long the tenant has been in place.
“I get requests all the time from people in private rented accommodation [saying] ‘in three weeks time I have to be out. What can you do for me?’.
“And the reality is that all I can offer them is a place in the hostel.
“Many have never experienced homelessness before … they’re scared to death going into hostels.
“It’s a nightmare scenario. And as I say the difficulty is that doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel.”
The Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien said that the increase in homelessness is “very disappointing”.
He said the Government was continuing to work “tirelessly to try and bring these numbers down and we will do all in our power to do so”.
McVerry said the ban on evictions should be reimposed, with exceptions for landlords in “particular hardship”.
“The majority of people becoming homeless today are coming from the private rented sector,” he said.

I was recently denied my housing application – which I fully qualified for – on the grounds that I “have no connection to the area” in which I’m applying… The city I was born in, raised in, went to primary school, secondary school, college, worked in my whole life in. And there are men on their way in planes who have yet to step foot on this island who will get housed before me.

When you think about it why would the government build more houses than they need…they have a vested interest to keep sweet the many vulture funds that have invested in properties in Ireland… as long as we have the status quo we will have high house prices and rent to satisfy the vulture funds… property and house prices are seen as a commodity by local and international investors…that is why have seen tax relief cut to the many mortgage holders… however tax relief to the vulture font has increased… it says it all

I think there needs to be a serious overhaul on the social housing system – as I’ve said before, it’s not right that a house that had family members that have now gone should stay with one tenant in it – it’s unfair IMO..okay so they may have been living there for years but downsize them to a one bed/2 bed place instead of a 4 bed house and place the larger family in it. Local Authorities need to get a bit real on that score now that we’re in this position – and I’m sorry but they got a house through council, they’re renting it only…and a sweet deal rent at that. They don’t have ownership.

If they were to work, it’d affect their payments and make it a waste of time. The system is broken when it rewards those who don’t want to do a tap at the taxpayers expense.

@Ciaran: The 12k+ is those in emergency accommodation. Those sleeping in tents are not in the system, but the numbers doing this are relatively small. Those staying with friends and family are not counted, but unlike rough sleepers, this number is likely a large percentage of the 12K+ number added on top.

While I understand they need housing, you’ve read articles I’m sure of irish people literally crying that they’ve no permanent place of residence despite being on a list for years.
You also have read, I sure of other nationalities claiming social welfare allowances under 2 different identities..it’s happened more than once and, despite our goodwill in offering a place, they’ve disrespected us. Not everyone is like that, you can’t tar everyone with the same brush and I’m very fond of a few people from other countries that I know but you have to admit, oftentimes we look after them better than our own. Are we being subsidised by their government for doing so – doubtful.

I just want to say that I am not racist, some of the most decent people I know are non nationals. For a number of years now we’ve had a problem with homelessness but this has been exacerbated recently with the influx of refugees. We welcome these people as an act of humanity, we would like to think that this would be extended to us if we were fleeing from war or catastrophe. What these people have seen and endured is something most of us will never comprehend. They are welcome here but it’s a difficult time for the nation given the housing crisis. Ideally everyone could be facilitated but it’s not possible so who goes where? To have your life in a bag not knowing where you’re going to be from one night to the next must be frightening. To have a child and to wonder when they’ll have their own bedroom must be heartbreaking.
There are injustices in the system but we can’t blame that on those individuals that came to our country and were lucky enough to get a house – they didn’t beg.
The government needs to step up and look after EVERYONE as a collective otherwise there will be the us and them mentality. Those people evicted/facing eviction need supports put in place. The social housing structure needs to be reviewed and improvements implemented so that it’s fair and transparent.
Things are not great here…but check out wealthy Los Angeles..up to 80000 homeless and tents all over the place. Beyond belief. There’s votes for those who seem to be doing what is right for housing so why isn’t the government doing more ? Or is it just physically impossible ? Ask your local builder what is the greatest drawback..without hesitation you will be told worker shortage. It’s a sad fact that young Paddy prefers east street.

I soke to a guy the other day who told me about the retrofit he had done in his 3 bedroom council house – note he lives on his own since his mam died 6 years ago, hasn’t worked in approx 15 years – but then he tells me he’s applied for disability allowance – I asked him for what – he says diabetes so I asked him if he was insulin dependent…NO ffs. Told him that’s not a disability so he then said scoliosis, visibly not, then arthritis – after all that he said..and he’s been waiting months for the council to come down to fix his light, he pays his rent, €26pw , he know it’s good BUT he knows someone paying €20

I’m not racist or anything like it but it really irks me ego- an article in the Indo over the last few weeks, a woman upset as she was in a shelter with her daughter in Dublin, had been evicted from her house, couldn’t afford rent, desperate, no garden for her daughter to play in, Dublin co f all help to her, she suffering mentally because of it – last option was to go to the papers in the hope she’d be listened to. Now it’s okay for you, sitting on your saddle on that high f-ing horse of yours, lacking any empathy for those people that have lived here all their lives and find themselves in situations such as that with zero help and possibly remaining in that situation for the foreseeable while people from abroad are getting looked after for good publicity.

@Laura H: It may surprise you to learn that those working people that you refer to comprises an ethnically diverse population. “Native Irish” and the immigrant community that have moved to this country over the past years are equally affected by the housing crisis. It’s not us versus them, and nothing you say will ever change my opinion on that.

@SYaxJ2Ts: It’s not a racist, jesus, I’m not racist at all – you just get slightly peed off when you see an injustice …yes, everyone deserves a roof over their head but in a fair fashion, you don’t jump to the front of the line. Likewise, yes, like everything it annoys me when I hear of anyone, irish or non-irish taking advantage of the welfare system but when it’s done because it’s known that we’re ignorant of names and ways they can be manipulated or through lack of familiarity can be quite cunning.
As I’ve said, I know some lovely, very honest and proud non nationals who work hard and deserve a council house if they were to get it, they pay their rent and contribute to society, not expect handouts.
I do find it hard to respect anyone who gets a council house, remains unemployed, everything handed to them – be they irish or non Irish – but there is a system in place and those who are on the top tier should be housed first.
Maybe there’s no system and it’s just the luck of the draw eh?
