THE REPUBLIC OF Ireland squad today landed home from the women’s World Cup in Australia but Vera Pauw’s future remains up in the air.
Pauw is out of contract at the end of the month, with Ireland’s next game slated to be the clash with Northern Ireland in the Nations League on 23 September. Contract renewal talks with Pauw were paused prior to the World Cup, and the FAI refused to comment on Pauw’s future while at the competition. Pauw herself called for clarity on the situation prior to the final game against Nigeria, and expects to continue on in the role.
The FAI today released a statement saying the World Cup would be reviewed and then discussed at board level. The FAI review all international camps as standard practice, but the World Cup review will have added significance as it will decide Pauw’s future.
“The Football Association of Ireland would like to congratulate the players, management and staff of the Ireland Women’s National Team on their performance at the Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023 and to thank all Irish fans both at home, around the world and in Australia for their magnificent support”, read the Association’s statement.
“We look forward to celebrating the team with fans at the Homecoming event on O’Connell Street in Dublin tomorrow evening.
“With our World Cup journey at an end, the FAI will now undertake a full and comprehensive review of the campaign and tournament, as is our standard practice, and this will be discussed at the next FAI Board Meeting in the coming weeks.”

World cup didn’t go well but if she deserves a new contract for how she has turned around the national team and moving the team forwards, especially as the FAI have backed kenny even though the men’s team have yet to show any signs of real progress

International manager can only work with the players available to them in short windows of time. So working on systems of play has to be the priority
She has done a great job in the short time she’s been in place. Sounds to me like some of the players trying to dictate how to run the team.

Maybe not internally fighting with one another before a tournament and looking to overrule the manger in public during matches could have helped a bit.
What’s the point of the FAI? All but two of the players in this squad are based abroad, it is extremely rare for any domestic players to make men’s squads. National leagues are a joke, facilities for kids and amateur teams would be non-existent if not for local councils. The GAA and IRFU efficiently manage competitions across all ages and grades, maintain facilities all across the country, develop players etc. The FAI hope foreign clubs can develop players born here, or we can find an Irish granny for players born abroad that have already been developed by foreign clubs, don’t really bother with domestic competitions, and then every few years make a big story about who should be national team manager to oversee these players developed abroad. A single HR manager could replace the FAI.

Vera Pauw has worked miracles with that team. Katie McCabe is a world class player. Ireland doesn’t have many others. To get to a world Cup with the players at her disposal, was the work of a great coach. We pour praise on Jack Charlton, who arguably underperformed given he had 15 or 16 top tier players for Euro 88 and Italian 90. Sheedy, Whelan, Moran, O’Leary, Quinn, Houghton etc were all playing at the top clubs in the very top level in England. We could have gone much further in those competitions with a coach who was able to play to their strengths instead of the hoof and run football Jack employed.
Fast forward to now. Vera Pauw has brought a level of professionalism to a soccer set up. I saw players over the last few weeks for Ireland who over hit five yard passes and made other inexplicable errors.
The reality is Vera has over performed with what she has at her disposal. Deserves a new contract, not to be vilified.
Our first world cup,we scored 1 goal,3 against us,to be fair not a bad record,not far off,the management deserves more time.
Deserves another contract, they won’t find better.

Suddenly everyone’s an expert. I’d be surprised if anyone here could name the bulk of the players, which clubs they play for without searching for it, never mind know anything at all about Vera Pauw.
By the way if I was her. I’ll tell them to put there job where the monkey put the nuts. Typical suits.
What is there to review ? She got the team , many of whom are not in contract to the World Cup , and they were a little unlucky to loose one game with a penalty and another with an OG, ?
We were drawn in the same group as 2 of the best 10 rated teams in the world plus did the best team in Africa. We did slightly worse than I’d hoped but about as good as I expected.
Next task is to widen the numbers of players and improve the skill set.
If I were Vera I would say thanks FAI but as you ain’t prepared to back me then you build on my foundation.
I seriously hope I’m wrong but I would be less than hopeful based on how they mismanage the men’s game here

New contract for Vera Pauw would probably end in tears as she doesn’t appear to have the players confidence given the recent avoidance by some players to fully endorse a new contract when speaking to the press.

Will we see a similar scenario with the irish women’s team mirror Scotland ladies that qualified for the 2019 World cup but haven’t progressed a real possibility.
