The cigarettes seized by Revenue Revenue

Cigarettes worth €2.8 million smuggled from Latvia seized at Dublin Port

The cigarettes were found in pallets which had arrived from the Netherlands and originated from Latvia.

CIGARETTES WORTH OVER €2,800,000 have been seized at Dublin Port.

The smuggled cigarettes, branded ‘Lambert and Butler’ and ‘Rothmans’, were discovered yesterday by Revenue officers upon the inspection of 12 pallets which had arrived from the Netherlands and originated from Latvia.

The cigarettes have an estimated retail value of approximately €2,866,750, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €2,244,400.

Over 3.6 million cigarettes were seized in total.

This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes and tobacco in the shadow economy.

Businesses or members of the public who have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco can contact Revenue in confidence on the confidential line 1800 295 295.

Investigations are ongoing.

@John finn: it’s a known fact that the money East European’s can save by buying their cigarettes when returning home every couple of months to see their families and loved one is substantial. They can cover their flight costs, give some money to their families and so on. And why not. Fair play to them. They are doing nothing wrong or illegal. It wasn’t to long ago that southern Ireland residents were zipping up the M1 to the North to buy their weekly shopping, cigs, alcohol and fuel.

What bugs me is that you see Revenue’s pictures in a contraband bust and even in drug busts instead of the Garda. It shows what this is really about. Not the public’s well-being.

@John Mulligan: That’s exactly my point, why is Revenue and not the Garda doing the screen cargo? Breaking the law should be above avoiding taxes, but looks like money is about the citizens’ well-being. What business does Revenue have detaining and putting their logos in a drug bust? They are illegal, so no taxes can ever be paid, this is not applicable to them, it should be the job of the Garda.

@Juan Venegas: Revenue & Customs are responsible for the inspection of all goods entering Ireland. If any contraband is located in ports/airports Revenue & Customs seize these products after consultation with the Gardai. That’s why you see the Revenue & Customs signs on these goods. You will notice however any drugs seized by the Gardai in inland operations only show Garda sign.

These little chihuahua countries( Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia) with the loud bark should watch their back. The US will sooner or later revise and drop them like a stone and pursue it’s own selfish interests, as it always does. It does that with all its ‘allies’ – even the bigger ones like the UK and Germany. Poland should be thinking long term strategic too in how much it can really depend on the US. Ukraine is a basket case. It was led down the garden path and it’s only future is to be a zombie rump state. The chihuahua countries will be abandoned too in time and be left with a (and who could honestly blame it) a very angry Russia on its doorstep.

@James Brohan: a angry Russia? Any country has the right to join nato. They don’t need Russias permission. NATO is a military alliance, reason why those countries want to join it’s because of Russia’s aggression in Eastern Europe. Poland is already on high alert because of Wagner forces on the border, nato will choke Russia down into submission. Putins threats of nuclear annihilation hasn’t divided or intimidated NATO it has down the complete opposite. Putin is the greatest recruiter for NATO. If Putin even sets foot in nato territory, he will be at war of 30+ countries, military is how much stronger than his. Russias will be in ruins and partitioned into spread of influence. The President of Ukraine will not rest until he has Putins head on a spike

@Alan Scott: son, Russia is effectively at war with 30+ countries right now. It has absorbed everything they can cumulatively throw at it militarily, and economically in terms of sanctions, and is coming out of it all smelling like roses. It is systematically demilitarizing and denatzifying Ukraine at it’s own pace. Ukraine should not have let it it be used by the US for its own strategic purposes. The plan by the US was always to go after Russia first, to carve it up and balkanize it, and go after China, the stronger entity, afterwards. Its plan have gone pear shaped now and it doesn’t know how to reverse course on Russia/Ukraine.
