Shannon Airport 'temporarily closed' to flights following heavy fog

The airport said its runway is expected to reopen later this morning once the fog clears.

SHANNON AIRPORT HAS been “temporarily closed” to flights following heavy fog.

The Co Clare airport was forced to close late last night due to the weather, with incoming and outgoing flights disrupted as a result.

Ryanair and Aer Lingus services are among those affected.

The airport remains closed until the fog lifts this morning. It expected a number of flights will be delayed as a result.

In a statement posted on social media, the airport said that the unexpected heavy fog coincided with essential taxiway maintenance work.

“As a result, flights in and out of Shannon Airport may be cancelled or delayed this morning, Monday 9th Oct,” the airport said.

“Passengers are advised to check their flight status directly with the airline in advance of travelling to the airport. The runway is expected to reopen later this morning once the fog clears, subject to weather conditions.”

@Brian Dunne: Comments on most topics can be taken as read. An article on a pay-gap researcher would be enormously triggering for many male commenters, for example.

@Brian Dunne: Most people only read the Journal because of the comments, without the comments it’s just a below average news site and most of the users will leave and get their news elsewhere.

I believe those works are ongoing until the end of the month. Just for understanding for the lay person. A pilot needs a certain visibility and cloud base to manually land an aircraft using their instruments. In most cases it’s 550 metres and a lowest cloud of 200ft. When the visibility goes below that you need additional equipment to allow for the aircraft to do an automatic landing. To do an automatic landing you need added protections as the margin for things to go wrong increases dramatically. While this work is going on those additional margins can’t be offered so you are left with scenario one above.

No point in mentioning the media fog here. It’s endemic and it’s not going away anytime soon.
