Stockholm is to ban petrol and diesel cars from its city centre, should we follow suit?

Exceptions will be made for police cars, ambulances and other security services

STOCKHOLM WILL BAN petrol and diesel cars in a central 20-block area of the city as of 2025 in a bid to improve air quality, a vice-mayor has said.

“Nowadays the air in Stockholm causes babies to have sick lungs and the elderly to die prematurely. It is a completely unacceptable situation,” Lars Stromgren, the city’s vice-mayor for transport and urban environment, said in a statement.

“We need to limit the harmful exhaust gases from petrol and diesel cars.”

The area is located in the heart of Stockholm’s shopping district and bustling with eateries and office buildings.

The ban, which will go into force on 31 December, 2024, is being introduced “in an area with a lot of pedestrians and cyclists, where the air quality needs to be better,” Stromgren said.

“This is also a part of the city where we see that there is a lot of interest in a faster electrification, with actors that can spearhead the transition,” he said.

Exceptions will be made for police cars, ambulances and other security services, the statement said.

“Electric vehicles also contribute to lower emissions and less noise, which means more deliveries can take place at night. That will reduce congestion on the roads in the city centre,” Stromgren said.

The measure is a first step, with plans for the ban to be extended at a later date.

“Disposable income improving ” was the phrase that rubbished this article for me. Are they kidding?

Considering the rise in retail sales growth, I don’t think it’s out of the question to say that the amount of disposable income is improving, on average. Why? Do you have figures to suggest otherwise? Would love to see them.

Something doesn’t seem right here. All of the Sinn Fein supporters were telling me that things were getting worse and that the economic recovery is a myth.

Here we go again , earlier this year than before . The countries still in recession , no one has money to spend unless they are in a great job or doing something illegal. I work in retail , I see it . Christmas will be the same as the year before or worse thanks to this sham of a government ripping us off with another budget and then there’s water charges . So wake up people the journal and the press are writing fiction . Don’t swallow it .

If they reduced VAT that would give the economy a real kick start. But then again- when Enda is in charge…
