MEPS MICK WALLACE and Clare Daly have called for the establishment of a new public service broadcast channel for European Parliament proceedings, arguing that Irish citizens do not understand what happens in the EU.
The Independent 4 Change MEPs outlined yesterday how the content for a parliamentary TV channel is already produced by an in-house service financed by the European Parliament’s budget.
All proceedings are already filmed, broadcast live and on-demand online. Wallace and Daly are calling for an Irish public service broadcaster to make use of the content and ensure it reaches the Irish public.

@Mary Toilet: The only problem being that the EU ticks none of the dictatorship boxes. None. Nada.
There isn’t even the most basic one which is an all powerful ‘charasmatic’ leader. The President gets a turn for a few years after being nominated by the Council, made up of elected representatives of all the EU countries amongst others. Rubbish dictatorship if so.
Sure the EU is not perfect. It involves humans representing hundreds of millions trying to reach a consensus so of course it’s got some issues! But it’s utterly base to even throw it in the same sentence as actual dictatorships. If you woke up under a real dictatorship you wouid be pining for your life in the EU within minutes.

@Mary Toilet: They don’t though. We choose to be a part of it. We have time and time again voted for pro-EU parties en masse. While some have drank the British, American and Russian hard right and far right kool aid, most want to remain the EU even with its problems. It has been a massive benefit for us. Have you seen footage of the country 30-40 years ago? It was second world.
You can vote for one of the anti-everything EU hating parties next election. I don’t think you’ll be getting your wish though. I don’t think our democracy is going to produce enough votes for economic suicide and an isolationist approach in such challenging times.

@Mary Toilet: Well, we definitely need to stop the copy/pasting of regulations into law without the slightest amendment to suit our own needs. We must be the only State that does that.
@Mary Toilet: If this was a dictatorship, you even criticising public officials online would result in you getting arrested. A quick IP address will give the state forces police to go to your home and have you arrested for criticising government officials. You don’t see a solicitor, your detained beyond the usual time, they will water bord you, to get a false confession, you would be denied basic food or toiletry services and you would be sent to jail for a very long time by a judge on the pay of the government. You don’t have a clue.

To be fair, at lease Clare Daly tells it as it is, from corruption in Irish politics to the Israeli genocide we see now as a collective punishment for the Hamas attack. If we have no Daly and her ilk to watch, is it better to watch Micheál Zelly Martin and his ilk who thinks he’ll never get the Nato job he feels he so richly deserves? The reason the Irish made rash decisions about Russia and Hamas was precisely because the media we received was Disney media and it took us years to realise how the US played us all along.

Does it really matter, as the comments section here on any reported debates would probably be closed. People’s opinions, no matter how you interpret them, are just that. Opinions. All should be heard, even from those of us with that I’m always right even when I’m wrong train of thought.It just seems that public opinion doesn’t suit the narrative these days, so don’t allow it, that’s dangerous journalism.
@Andrew Giles: The point of the media these days is the control and direction of public opinion in ways which will suit the plans of those who really make the rules – the very wealthy. Opinions count for nothing unless based on fact and evidence-gathering. Better to speak factually than hypothetically.
@Antaine (aolbfs): This is true! The question then though, orbits around how facts are gathered and one’s ability to recognise fact from fiction. It’s getting and is gonna get harder in the age of AI. More people will be more easily fooled.
The real danger is that truthful communication aimed at true problem solving has the potential to really break down completely, we see this all around the world now I believe.

Increased transparency is never a bad thing. Not everything is for everyone. I don’t think the suggestion is that we’ll be forced to watch it. It won’t be the Ludovico technique ffs.

@The Firestarter: Exactly. Who cares what the national parliament does, what they discuss and how they discuss it, who attends etc. The less transparency for the public, the better.
I am flabbergasted at the amount of people whinging that comments are not open on any article regarding Israel/Gaza/Palestine.
There are far too many contributors who are incapable of having an adult, intelligent and respectful conversation regarding the same.

It would keep one updated about politics in the EU and nobody could whinge about the EU being too ‘distant’ or ‘remote’ and ‘nothing got to do with life in Ireland’.
