GARDAÍ HAVE APPEALED for information about the theft of a truck, and subsequent chase, in county Cork.
The lorry, which was stolen in the Bandon area on Tuesday night, was involved in a chase yesterday morning.
A garda fired a gunshot into the cab of the stolen truck during a pursuit in which the lorry rammed several cars. No injuries were reported following the chase but garda vehicles and civilian cars were damaged.
It is understood that a garda fired the shot through the windshield of the truck and the heavy goods vehicle was brought to a stop shortly afterwards.
In a statement released today, a spokesperson said gardaí in Bandon “are continuing to investigate all the circumstances of a theft of a lorry and other related incidents”.
A man in his 30s was arrested after the chase yesterday. He is still being detained at a garda station under the provisions of section four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
As part of this investigation, gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have observed a white DAF rigid truck in the following areas at the following times yesterday to contact them:
“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in any of these areas at these times are asked to make this footage available to investigating gardaí,” the statement noted.

No wonder he was dangerous driving, he must have been scared for his life, we need to be more considerate. If the highly trained professional thought it necessary to fire, then it was necessary in defence of the lives of others, well done that man/woman!
I feel sorry for the policeman who fired the shot at this thug/thief. The officer is probably going to be cross questioned while the judges facilitate the criminal. Didn’t this cop not learn from his comrade who followed 3 thugs in a stolen car who then went on to the motorway in the wrong direction? I know what I would have done in this case; as little as possible. Thank you wigs and defense lawyers, you’ve made a mockery of the legal system.
I hope the poor driver is ok! these gardai are out of control firing uncontrolled shots at a speeding driver. Could they not have calmly followed him and then discussed his actions afterwards. I hope he wasn’t foreign or a member of a minority group because then it is 100% racially motivated by them.
@Joe Stevens: I think you’ll find the driver was out of control. So the Gardai are supposed to let him potentially cause havoc and death, then have a few stiff words with him? What’s racially motivated got to do with anything? Irrespective of gender, race, religion or anything else, they did what needed to be done.
