#GAZA Israel continued its assault on Gaza today as doctors said hospitals across the territory were shutting down due to a lack of power.

#LEBANON A Hezbollah attack wounded seven Israeli troops and 10 other people near the border with Lebanon, Israel’s military and rescue services said.

#FRANCE Tens of thousands of people marched in Paris today alongside prominent politicians, demonstrating against antisemitism.

#VOLCANO An Icelandic town home to some 4,000 people near the capital Reykjavik could be heavily damaged by a volcano expected to erupt within hours or days, experts said.

#UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced intensifying calls to sack Suella Braverman for stoking tensions ahead of Armistice Day protests, with Labour leader Keir Starmer accusing the British Home Secretary of spawning “hatred and distrust”.

PARTING SHOT

WE’RE NOW A month into a violent conflict between Israel and Hamas, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilians and sparking a dire humanitarian crisis.

Calls for a lasting ceasefire are struggling to get off the ground, and the UN chief António Guterres has now dubbed Gaza a ‘graveyard for children’ as tens of thousands struggle without food, medical care and basic provisions.

This current spate of fighting is just one in a long, long history of tension between Israel and Palestine, dating right back to the partition of the country in the 1940s.

So how did we get here?

This week on The Explainer, we’re joined by our Assistant News Editor Stephen McDermott to give you a clear overview of the basics of what we’re seeing today – from who Hamas are to how Israel came to be a state.

We also look at the 7 October attack, and the subsequent attacks on Gaza by the Israeli military, both of which have sent tensions in the region spiralling.

We badly need a few whistle blowers and honest judges in Ireland. Governments and even local councillors get away with too much and pay themselves too much

Some of the comments here are incredibly insulting to the trans community. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Manning’s gender change is not even the focus of the interview, it only features slightly, so I have no idea why the only thing you are all interested in is her anatomy.

I was having a good morning until I seen the absolutely disgusting way you lot poke fun at this. Couldn’t you all keep your hateful, horrible comments to yourselves. I hope none of your children Have gender issues, you should all be ashamed. There’s a difference between transgender and transsexual by the way.

i take it that most of you have also read the artical about the girl with red hair who took her life because of bullying, yet you come on here and throw your hateful comments around, chelsea may not be able to read them but im sure alot of people going through their own transition will. Its hard enough growning up let alone trying to figure out such complex issues at the same time.No you may not understand it, and yes you may find it confusing but please show abit of compassion. if we all showed just a little bit more to each other and teach it to our children then maybe this country can turn itself around from the hatefilled, vicious bullying nation its becomming.this mentallity is not alright lads and its nothing to be proud of.

What exactly is nonsense about it? There’s nothing in this interview that doesn’t reflect their experience as far as I can see.

Kris, who are you to dictate Chelsea Manning’s identity? You wouldn’t think it was politically correct nonsense if you had a female brain and a male body. You would feel trapped and victimised by people just like you. The trans community haven’t chosen to be different and victimised. It is simply a part of who they are.

It seems we have some people in society that were told as toddlers ‘Boys have a willy and girls don’t’ and cannot seem to get passed that notion.

How is it so hard to understand that your psychological make-up does not always match your physical body? So what if her body is male, the person inside is female and my god how difficult that must be! Wouldn’t you feel like nature gave you a raw deal???

The fact of the matter is, we as intelligent, cognitively aware mammals are not perfect. The evolution of the mind is complex and does not always fall into two neat categories. Our world has variety, open your eyes and quit referring to your childish ideals.

It is people like the narrow minded trolls on this page that force people into depressing and suicide. I’m proud to support trans people. They didn’t choose this and there’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with them.

    Grow up people
