Meta to appeal against stricter EU rules imposed on some of its platforms

The law will force the largest digital firms to comply with more stringent regulations.

FACEBOOK OWNER META has said it will appeal the inclusion of its Messenger and Marketplace products in tough curbs on digital giants that the EU unveiled in September.

Brussels is working through a dense legislative agenda to build tougher regulation of big tech, arguing it needs to protect European consumers online and to encourage competition in an industry dominated by US giants.

In early September, it announced a list of 22 companies — including Meta, Apple and TikTok parent ByteDance — that will face tough new curbs under the application of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The law will force the largest firms to change their ways under a checklist of dos and don’ts and, regulators hope, create a fairer market.

Today, Meta said it would appeal the inclusion of Messenger and Marketplace under the legislation.

“This appeal seeks clarification on specific points of law regarding the designations of Messenger and Marketplace under the DMA,” said a Meta spokesperson.

“It does not alter or detract from our firm commitment to complying with the DMA, and we will continue to work constructively with the European Commission to prepare for compliance”.

The European Commission did not immediately comment on the move when asked by AFP.

In September, the European Commission, the EU’s powerful antitrust body, named 22 “core platform” services belonging to five US tech behemoths identified as “gatekeepers” — Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft — and China’s ByteDance.

The companies involved must fully comply with the DMA by 6 March 2024.

The “gatekeeper” status applies when a service has more than 45 million monthly active users and more than 10,000 yearly active business users established in the EU.

One of the DMA’s main aims is to stop larger players crushing the progression of smaller companies that threaten to become rivals by gobbling them up through takeovers.

The EU has led the way globally for taking on big tech.

The DMA, alongside its sister law, the Digital Services Act (DSA), gives the commission sharper teeth against tech behemoths that critics say have for too long been given free rein to act to the detriment of users.

The sad thing is that this ‘artist’ will probably garner quite a following because of his idiotic actions.

And spraying paint on a stencil – while it may make a statement on a concrete wall – is hardly art. You are right Mart_n, gobsh*tes will think this is a statement of something other than vandalism.

Stencils are not art – by any stretch of the imagination. Hope the wonker gets fined at least 10 000 euros for this and a prison sentence. As for the security guard shouting you cant take photographs, pity he wasnt doing his job in the first place and this act of vandalism wouldnt have happened.

What if the artist made the stencil? And there is no clear definition of what is and is not art, thats half the fun!

Yeah, come on! Who cares about Picasso! Them bankers took our jobs! Grrr!

On a serious note; I’d argue that stencils are a form of art. The stencil has to be designed by the artist just like any other artform. Think of them as the storyboards to a film. It’s all part of a process.

I obviously don’t condone vandalising works like this, but it’s an interesting phenomena all the same.

Stencils are art! Someone has to come up with the idea, cut the shape and choose an appropriate medium on which to place it. It is born out of creativity, the definition of art in my opinion!nnOh. Plus this guy was a moron.

‘The act was carried out by “young Mexican-American artist Uriel Landeros”’ — this is not a story about Picasso. It’s some sort of protest by a “young Mexican-American artist”. Who gives a shit? There are important things going on in this part of the world. But the USA ranks very highly with the Journal.
There again, maybe you’re a life-long Picasso enthusiast … along with the “editors” of the Journal. ;)

    Hi ‘wayupnorth’.

“Additional reporting from AP’ means just that – that some of the information in the story comes from the Associated Press service, and some from other sources.

As for important things going in in this part of the world, I’m sure if you peruse the rest of the site, particularly the ‘Irish’ section, you will find something more to your taste. This story is of interest to some of our readers, if not you in particular.

    Thanks for reading,
