Former England manager Terry Venables dies, aged 80

“We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” read a family statement.

FORMER ENGLAND, BARCELONA and Tottenham manager Terry Venables has died at the age of 80.

As a player he made more than 500 appearances for Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace but made his real mark as a coach, also managing Palace and QPR.

“We are totally devastated by the loss of a wonderful husband and father who passed away peacefully yesterday after a long illness,” read a family statement.

“We would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly sad time to allow us to mourn the loss of this lovely man who we were so lucky to have had in our lives.”

Why isn’t their an Irish visual arts prize run along the same lines as the Turner Prize? Visual art in Ireland could really do with a profile boost.

Why do the media keep describing him as Dublin-born or Irish-born, have you heard him speak? He is Irish full stop. Just because he lives in Glasgow doesn’t stop him being a Dubliner?!

The BBC twitter news page referred to him as Glasgow based. Why they just couldn’t say Irish artist , is baffling or not, given how they claim most Irish artists

The turner prize is open to British artists. He’s Glasgow-based, so for the purposes of eligibility he’s British I suppose. Obviously the BBC felt they couldn’t just call him ‘Irish artist Duncan Campbell’, as by that description he wouldn’t be eligible.

Dublin born? Are we doing that distasteful thing where we start claiming people no matter how tenuous the link.

The Turner prize is for British Artists under 50. Duncan Campbell is eligible considering has studied and worked in the UK For several years. That’s why the press releases refer to him as Irish Born.
