The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know as you head out the door.

1. #GANGLAND CRIME: Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said Ireland’s criminal gangs should not expect to avail of the protection of the Gardaí. Speaking about the recent spate of gangland murders, Shatter said it was unrealistic to expect that Gardaí protect individuals “who are routinely trying to avoid the Garda so they can continue to engage in criminality”.

2. #LEAKED: Labour leader Eamon Gilmore has said that the “context” to Róisín Shortall’s resignation, which was discussed in a leaked confidential email from the chairman of the party, was the need to ensure government stability. Separately, the Tánaiste’s car was egged during a protest in Dublin earlier today.

3. #HOME HELP: The HSE has said it plans to cut €8 million from home help services in the next three months. The move, which will see around 450,000 hours of home help care cut, has been described as “chaotic and ham-fisted” by opposition politicians.

4. #DISAPPEARANCE: Police in Wales have arrested 46-year-old Mark Bridger on suspicion of the murder of 5-year-old April Jones.

5. #COVER BOY: Have you seen Enda Kenny on the cover of TIME magazine yet? The Taoiseach appears under the headline “The Celtic Comeback” with a front page that says: “Prime Minister Enda Kenny is rebuilding his country’s economy. What the rest of Europe can learn from him”.

and what does our minister for health propose will happen all these people, who so badly need their home help hours, these hours enable so many people stay in their own homes and continue to live independantly, has he considered the costing of providing them, with sheltered housing, or nursing home care, not that there is much of that available either, what a clown he is, he really needs to start thinking outside the box, and come up with other ways of saving money, and we could all give him a bit of help on that one

also it is very cynical to make these cuts pre-budget, fairly typical of this governments underhanded tactics against the most vulnerable

Enda Kenny is part of the problem, he will need to do a damn sight more before he is part of the solution and that means changing a lot of his party’s policies and ideas.

    correction**:
@ Revolting Peasant quotes seeing ‘people were embracing the difficulties.’

Mr Kenny should have gone to Specsavers if that’s what he sees. I don’t see much embracing going on round Mayo and we’re getting the difficulties in at least equal measure to the worst hit.
