Sale of vapes to under-18s banned from tomorrow

Those who sell nicotine products to children could be fined up to €4,000 or face six months in prison.

THE GOVERNMENT HAS banned the sale of nicotine inhaling products to people under 18 years of age.

From tomorrow, those who sell such products to children could be fined up to €4,000 or face six months in prison.

The new law comes as a public consultation has been launched to determine a range of stricter regulations on the pricing, display and advertising of e-cigarettes and vapes.

Speaking about the new law, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly thanked those in the Oireachtas “who understood the urgency” of the change.

He said that in 2024, other measures of the The Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill will be implemented. These include banning the sale of tobacco and nicotine products at self-service checkouts and prohibiting advertisements near schools and on public transport.

Minister for Public Health, Wellbeing and the National Drugs Strategy, Hildegarde Naughton said the new law is “a good beginning”.

“The protection of children is at the centre of our national tobacco control policy, Tobacco Free Ireland, and I welcome this major step forward in that direction,” she said.

“We know that young people who vape are more likely to go on to smoke, so it is important that they are not drawn to these products.”

The public consultation is now open for submissions until Friday, 5 January 2024.

Donnelly and Naughton want “as many people as possible” to engage with the public consultation in the coming weeks.

The fact it took this long to ban a nicotine product to minors…

@Kieran Menon: I worked in operating theatre removing cancerous lungs and am mystified that people smoke. Cannot get it out of my mind the care surgeons take not to disfigure young patients especially female patients by entering the rib cavity through the back to access lung. Humans must be the most unnatural of all creatures to self harm by choice with chemicals.

Comments closed on almost every article. Has the journal become so insecure that it’s afraid a lot of those “solid” articles will be rumbled… this one below is comical, a sweeping myth buster, with zero evidence or insight. And very disrespectful and dismissive of the intelligent people in our country.
The opening point is comedy gold, which basically states its more economical to run an ev, the author forgot to mention “for now”. It wouldn’t be too long before that cost was ramped up if everyone had an ev.

@Fintan Stack: just add, the author has neglected to discuss the practical gaps of EVs, being left stranded if there’s a power outage, the occasion where one might run out of power you can walk to the next station for a can of electricity, can’t use heaters or aircon in the vary weather conditions for very long as those functions are a huge drain on batteries. In the event of a serious accident time is lost disconnecting the battery before emergency services can rescue the occupants. Not to mention most garages tell you probe enough that their resale/trade in value is poor, and the cost of replacing and disposing of batteries is eye watering.

And rightfully so. I used a vape to quit smoking and they’re a legit tool for helping get off the sticks. I’d be more concerned about under 18s and weed though. Yesterday morning I walked past a group of lads going to school smoking joints at 8:15!

@Boris Blank: My take is that these drugs have side-effects – consequences – that are more serious than the problem they are being prescribed for.

And there are alternatives that do not have these serious consequences.
