The 5 at 5 5 stories, 5 minutes, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know as you head out the door.

1. #JOBSWATCH: Up to 1,300 jobs will be created over the next three years by the Kerry Group as it builds a new campus in Kildare. The new campus – for which Kildare beat off bids from London and Amsterdam – will employ 800 people when it opens, as well as 400 in construction, and potentially 100 more when the centre is fully commissioned in four years’ time.

2. #COURTS: A Sligo widow has successfully sued the killers of her husband for €720,000 in damages. The High Court’s award makes Margaret Madden the first person to successfully sue the people responsible for a the murder of a family member.

3. #FARMERS: Up to 15,000 farmers took the streets of Dublin this afternoon in protest at potential cuts to the EU’s master budget – which they say could sound the death knell for Irish agriculture. The Irish Farmers’ Association says possible cuts to the budget for 2014 to 2020, which will be agreed shortly, could mean major cutbacks in CAP payments which Irish farmers need to keep going. Simon Coveney says he understands the farmers’ concerns.

4. #GREECE: There have been major protests in Greece as German chancellor Angela Merkel arrived for a meeting with Greek premier Antonis Saramas in Athens today. 6,500 police offers were mobilised for her visit, with Merkel the focus of much ire among the Greek public for Germany’s role in insisting on harsh austerity measures in exchange for European bailouts.

5. #NOBEL PRIZE: The second of this year’s Nobel Prizes – in physics – has been awarded to US and French researchers for their work in quantum physics – that could one day open the way to revolutionary computers. Serge Haroche and David Wineland’s work could see computers transcend the current system where all data is recorded through a combination of zeroes and ones.

@ Glee…imagine the uproar if “Rory Leprechaun” were black, had a front gold tooth and from Harlem or the Bronx?? Boycott Glee until this character is scrubbed.

It’s sad. Making Irish look like fools. I feel sorry for the kid. He must be cringing….. or counting his money!

The Irish actor should know better -stereotyping keeps us stuck. I remember listening to all that stereotypical stuff once in Canada when I was introduced as Irish and it is soooooo annoying

What a shame. I saw him on the show. Put his heart and soul into it. Pity they’re portraying him in such a bad light. I know as a country we’re up the creek and will soon living with a pig in the poke again but stererero
