Public invited to have their say on early plans for new greenway projects in Co Cork

The projects are being funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Greenway Programme.

PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS ON early-stage plans for two new greenway projects in Co Cork are now open for submissions.

Cork County Council is inviting members of the public to have their say on the Skibbereen Sections of the West Cork Greenway and the Cork to Kinsale Greenway.

Both projects are at phase one concept and feasibility stage. This involves the development of the study area, investigating the constraints within the area to examine the feasibility of the project and optioneering of the proposed route.

It is proposed that for the West Cork Greenway, all routes will originate in Skibbereen and connect to the communities of Baltimore, Schull and Drimoleague.

For the Cork to Kinsale Greenway, it is proposed to develop a suitable route creating connectivity between Cork City and Kinsale.

The projects are being funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s (TII) Greenway Programme and will follow the Code of Best Practice for National and Regional Greenways, the council said.

The public consultations are designed to provide information on the projects and to invite feedback that the design team should consider.

The first public consultation for the West Cork Greenway – Skibbereen Sections will be online until 23 February, with information also available to view at Skibbereen Library during the consultation period.

The first public consultation for the Cork Kinsale Greenway will be online until 29 February.

In-person events will also be held at the Viaduct Restaurant on Wednesday, 7 February 2024 from 2pm to 8pm and in Kinsale Library on Thursday, 8 February from 2pm to 8pm.

Information will also be available to view at Kinsale Library during the consultation period.

Alternatively, submissions can also be made by post to Greenways, Cork National Roads Office, Richmond, Glanmire, Cork, T45 WA44.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Frank O’Flynn, is encouraging communities to have their say in order to ensure that the greenways “align with the needs of residents and businesses in the area”.

“Our common goal is to provide greenways that are sustainable, accessible, safe, and attractive for locals and visitors alike.”

Independent bookshops matter. We need to support them. Hats off to An Post for introducing a special low rate postage fee for books during the pandemic.

@Mairead Jenkins: Do you ever wonder why they kept off licences open whole closing bookshops? Crazy wasn’t it?

Please don’t support Amazon. If you have to pay a couple of euro extra so what? It’s the price of a coffee. Support your local booksellers.

@Callanan: I agree, but you can buy maybe a dozen books or more on amazon for the price as a single new one. unfair for the authors. I used to spend payday in local book stores and come out with with more bags of books than i can carry, nearly all second hand due to the prices. and i miss the smell. but digital is far better for supporting the authors which is a shame.

The issue is that there is almost no company that offers anything to the author of second hand book sales. I read a lot, I mean A huge amount, have done so all my life and will generally get through 3 or 4 full length novels a week at least. The authors get nothing with second hand sales even though i prefer print to digital, i buy most of my books on kindle lately as the author get their cut each time. I have a few thousand paper and hardbacks that a lot of the authors did not get a penny from as they were second hand, many were also new but not nearly as much.but i have app app 5000 books on kindle that all the authors get a cut from the sales. It’s an unfair system that needs updating

@Trevor Donoghue: always wondered why authors never complain about public libraries. Literature seems to have been deemed an art that should be free to all.

The lack of public transport and commutes could spoil the plot for them. Really miss books since work from home came in.

@Paul O’Sullivan: it’s not lack of books that’s the problem, I have a stack. It’s lack of time or opportunity to just sit and read without the commute. One of the things I’m really looking forward to about when things start to go back to normal is reading again.
