Cork's Savoy venue to re-open, creating 65 new jobs

The venue, which is located in a historic building in the city, will have live events, trapeze artists and 3D mapping visuals .

CORK’S SAVOY THEATRE is to reopen, creating 65 jobs in the process.

The theatre is re-opening after a refurbishment and redesign investment of €3 million and is set to be a state of the art clubbing and live venue, its owners said.

The new venture will create 65 new jobs, 40 of which will be permanent, 15 of which will be full-time. The remaining 25 jobs will comprise of local dancers and performers from Cork’s culture scene.

Jason Denham, one of the venture’s operators, said:

The nightclub and pub sector is rapidly changing, due to the economic climate.  We have learned to adapt to this new landscape very successfully through our work in Dublin club Lost Society and other Dublin venues.   Our approach is progressive, hands on, constantly adapting to change and it works – our success in Dublin is proof of this.  With the re-opening of the Savoy, we will be creating a new era for going out in Cork, and at the same time restoring one of Cork’s iconic night spots to its former glory, thanks to an investment of €3 million.

The Savoy has been transformed into a multi- level clubbing and live venue, with the space being re-designed by top company CDP Architects.

The bespoke sound and lighting installation was designed by AVL CEO Kevin Mc Carthy, who said that the team developed and installed a cutting edge sound and lighting system “that could only be rivalled by the best clubs in the world”.

It is expected that the Savoy will play host to bands, comedy acts and national and international DJs, while Cork-based performers from the world of arts, theatre and dance will play a huge role in bringing the venue alive, with weekly performances from aerial acrobats, circus, carnival acts and dancers.

The bar team has also been trained by top mixologists and the club will use new technology including 3D mapping and audio-visual displays.

The venue will launch on 19 October.

Nightmare Junction from Luas Drivers perception. Speed Limit @ that Junction is 40kph reducing to 10 kph on the Sean Heuston Bridge. Cars, buses and Taxi’s forever breaking the lights there. Emergency brakes are common on that intersection. Looks like the bin carrier broke the lights heading uphill. Tram would have seen it @ the last second @ 40kph hence the severity of the crash. You can see by the pictures that the stopping distance from the intersection to halt is approximately 10 to 15mtrs past the impact point. The original contact would have caused the tram to derail on impact. A luas drivers job is a danergerous and stressful one at times!!

It’s generally not the Luas drivers fault- provided they didn’t break their own stop/go signals then a crash involving a tram is always the fault of the motorist.

The problem is that because there is only o e every 6-8 minutes some motorists think they can break red lights to cross over the tracks. I’d bet my last fiver the motorist always says after the accident ‘he cane out of no-where’, i.e.they didn’t look

I was wondering when you’d appear. A Luas-related article is incomplete without Sean Mc Avinue whingeing about the “disadvantages of the Luas”.

If people obeyed traffic signals and didn’t walk / drive on to tram tracks without looking, there would be no accidents.

You wouldn’t blame the train if someone drove through a red light on to a level crossing and caused a crash (not all level crossings have gates / barriers).

If the Luas could stop as quick as cars a lot of accidents would have been avoided. And by the way all vehicles must give Right of Way to pedestrians and cyclists. Maybe when you get your full driving license then within a few years you’ll understand. So I’ll talk to you when the Luas comes up again, you idiot!

We have had this discussion before. The Luas has a longer braking distance than cars, but it does not drive in the same traffic lanes as cars. Cars must be able to stop quickly because they share lanes with lots of other traffic.

Of course both of your statements are true, but you cannot directly compare the two in this manner. I could just as easily put the following to you:
    1. If cars ran on tracks there would be less potential for collisions.
    2. The Luas is more visible than cars and other road users are more likely to know that a Luas is approaching because of its visibility, its bell and the traffic signals indicating its approach.

However, these do not infer that cars are dangerous and should not be allowed on the road.

As I pointed out already, trains and cars use the same space at level crossings (some of which do not have barriers or gates). You would not blame the train if a vehicle drove through a red light on to a level crossing and caused an accident. The same principle applies in the case of a vehicle driving on to Luas tracks. The Luas does not share traffic lanes with other vehicles, and therefore other vehicles do not have an excuse for being on a Luas track when a Luas is approaching.

Conveniently refused to defend your ‘fact’ there I see.

The Luas has a longer breaking distance than cars, as do buses, trains, trucks, planes and space rockets.

Yes cars would be in more accidents if they performed like giant loaded vehicles.

Neither rhetorical question really proves anything more than your concession that pedestrians and cyclists do NOT have an automatic right of way.

@Sean McAvinue….. There have been millions of kilometres totalled on the Luas. There have been Millions of passengers carried on the Luas. The ratio of accidents to kilometres travelled is miniscule and I would bet that its the lowest in the Europe if not the World. Yes the stopping distance of a Tram is 3 times that of a motorised vehicle but the majority of accidents on the Luas have not been caused by Luas drivers but have been the fault of car drivers who ignore warnings and dont heed sign posts!!
