Missed appointments during pandemic a factor in lower measles vaccine uptake, HSE says

A man has died of the highly contagious disease.

A DOCTOR LEADING the HSE’s taskforce on measles has said the pandemic may have contributed to a lower uptake of the measles vaccine.

Someone was reported to have died of the highly-contagious disease this week.

Dr Lucy Jessop told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that, while most parents now have confidence in the vaccine, complacency about measles and the pandemic may be behind the recent low uptake of the MMR vaccine, which fights against the disease.

“I think in the main people now realise it’s a safe and effective vaccine,” she said.

“I think the current decrease in uptake is more to do with the COVID vaccine pandemic, maybe missing out on appointments.”

Jessop says the alarm caused by the recent case shows how uncommon the disease has become due to the success of the vaccine.

There were four measles cases reported in Ireland in 2023, two cases reported in 2022, no cases were reported in 2021, and five cases were reported in 2020.

There were no deaths reported in any of those years.

Symptoms of measles include cold-like symptoms such as aches and pains, a runny nose, sneezing and a cough.

Other symptoms include:

  • Sore red eyes that may be sensitive to light
  • A temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above, which may reach around 40 degrees Celsius
  • Small greyish-white spots in your mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tiredness and a general lack of energy
  • Rash, which usually appears on head and neck first and spreads to rest of body

The HSE’s new taskforce, which Jessop is a part of, was formed to monitor and prevent the spread of the disease.

Eastern Europeans have an inbuilt distrust of vaccines a legacy from the Soviet era add that with parents who genuinely believe that the vaccine causes autism and I think the auld herd immunity thing is a thing of the past never to be seen again. Unless the government follows the American example no vaccine no entry to schools daycare etc.

This article states “man reported to have died of the highly-contagious disease this week”. This cannot be proven until his cause of death is known, so in effect the article is scaring people into thinking they’ll die of measles.

@Osprey: When a person gets run over by a bus and dies it is reasonable to say what the person might have died of, even if that cannot be official until the coroner’s report.

The medics treating this person have made a reasonable claim, a claim that will not be official until the coroner’s report which could be many months away.

We know *you* would prefer not to be aware of these scary risks in our lives but most of us would like to know so that we can act and plan as appropriate.

Some of us have to behave as adults, particularly when there are some who refuse to do so.

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere: The overwhelming majority of Irish adults are vaccinated against measles since childhood, even now the vaccination rate for children is around 90% this scaremongering from the WHO is just to try to push their faltering controlling pandemic preparedness treaty over the line. The likelihood is that man that died god rest him was not Irish. As a previous commenter said we cannot be held responsible for people coming from countries that don’t have MMR vaccine uptake as kids

You know that vaccines work, that vaccines are effective.
And still you make anti-vax representations here.

The Covid vaccines saved many, many lives, and much suffering.

    So cut it out.
People could die because of you.

And many, many more who went through very severe illness for extended periods.

The lives of younger people – including children – were also saved by the vaccine.

@William Slevin: It is *you* William Slevin that misrepresent facts.

*You* know well that these vaccines are effective, as evidenced by your comments of some days ago regarding foreigners being the source of the recent measles outbreaks *because* they weren’t vaccinated.

So you *know* the vaccines work.

And yet here you are, again, trying the same nonsense that was used for the Covid pandemic.

    Please stop.
    Just stop.

Someone could die because of you.
Someone could end suffering life-changing side-effects.

    Just stop.

@William Slevin: But here you are posting misinformation about vaccines.

You have just made claims about the Covid vaccines that are not true.

That vaccines saved many lives, and much suffering.

Those reading your posts could easily come away believing that you are against all vaccines, including the MMR.

As there is a risk of the spread of these particular diseases at the moment, then please put at the top of all your posts that you support and encourage people to vaccinate against these diseases – Measles, Mumps and Rubella (German Measles).

    Thank you.
